Fall of Calais.

Fall of Calais.

Yes, the last English posession on the Continent.

Your question.

Ok, before I piss off everyone due to not asking a question...

During the armada campaign (1588) there were pretty much six separate groups to the British fleet, headed by Wynter, Seymour, Drake, Howard, Frobisher and Hawkyns. Of course, some of their flagships are well known - Drake's HMS Revenge and Howard's HMS Ark Royal, for example.

What was the name of the overall flagship of the British squadron stationed near Calais to keep a watch on Parma's forces (NOTE : this squadron was made of two out of the above six groups, while the other four were, under Howard, facing the Armada itself)?

Worthless bonus that is NOT the main question and do NOT count toward who gets the next question : What were the names of the other three flagships not mentionned above (ie, Revenge and Ark Royal are not valid answers)?

EDIT : Split the question since I remembered the "no split answer" rule.

Yep.

HMS Rainbow was the answer, Seymour's flagship. His second in command, Wynter, had his flag on the HMS Vanguard, while Frobisher had the Triumph and Hawkyns had the Victory.

Someone give the new Q.

George Washington, but you are probably trying for the president of the Continental Congress, which is a cheap trick, imho, because I can't remember his name.

so close yet so far away

Hmmm.... Given that Congress was in session *before* Washington's inaguration, it might just be the president pro tem of the Senate at the time, whose name I cannot recall.

o yea americans, did you pay attention in u.s. history class? was the constitution the first govt. of the states?

I did, but I don't remember the Articles government having an executive. But in that case, I say John Hancock.

John Hanson? I Googled this, and the article
states that his actual title was "President of the Congress"; i.e. the presiding officer of that body, not "President of the United States"; i.e. chief executive of the country. I'd be interested in seeing your source, and its arguments.

i'm not argueing because thats who i was looking for. he was elected for a 1 year term--as was his sucessors.

if you google hanson you will see he is often called the "first president" of the united states

do mean the one buildt 1859 being the first ship with combined sail & steam "engine" and with steel plates as armour?

The last was what I was looking for. The world's first iron
warship. And unlike the Monitor and Merrimack, it was seaworthy.

Your question, schmiddi.

I agree the monitor was at best marginally seaworthy (on a calm day, with a tug standing by), but I am not aware of a source that would make the merrimack (aka the Virginia) as unable to take the ocean. Is there a reference you could provide to indicate it was not seaworthy?

@barron--can't remember were i saw it but the armour made her top heavy.

looked up some--when fully loaded both her stern and bow were several inches under water!!! can't think this was good on the high seas:D

secondly she had engines that had been abandoned by the navy early as useless( but never removed from the merrimac )

so i think a top heavy, half underwater already ship with poor engines that could barely move them was a hazard--she could only due 6 kts.
