History Rewritten (Original Thread)

ok thanks guys for your help... I have updated to 3.19 and also i got the mod to work ... After multiple tries... So I'm playing most of the time this series http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=403637 and when I'm playing the scenario, I can't access the civic tabs... It makes the game quit.. I can access the others though... Just not the civics... I've tried different scenarios and the same problem arise... Regular games seem to work fine... I'll try a regular game and let you know.

What about pressing alt+X, before it used to show me some kind of dotmap, but now it makes the game quits...
Also when you selectan unit, I used to see some kind short panel that would allow me to select only unit that can promoted, allow me to group units by combat type, it had disappear now as well...
Now it may be a stupid question, but tbh I don't even know if that was included in Bat or I added something or maybe it's just an option I have to click or it's just not there anymore... So if you can help, you're more welcome to do so, thanks.

The scenario you linked isn't compatible. History Rewritten is designed to be played by itself, it contains many gameplay changes and additions (see first posts for details). There are several maps with realistic starting locations included in HR but no scenarios as such.

Scenarios are written for the standard game or for a specific mod. They are not transferable. The exception is with mods like BUG or BAT that contain no gameplay changes (just graphic and interface changes) - some scenarios will work with these.

The Alt+X dotmap and the unit groupings are part of BUG (and I suppose BAT since that includes BUG). The unit commands from BUG are a line of small icons just above the unit icons at the bottom of the screen. BUG also lets you group units in various ways if you are looking at the defense advisor panel. Is one of these what you mean by the "unit panel"?

In a separate thread I have been commenting on civics.
Comments from additional players would be valuable.

The thread is in this same subforum.

Thanks Alan :)

Hi, I downloaded it. It loads and when I check Advanced - Build it shows up. But when I start a game a completely normal game starts. I cannot find it as a scenario or whatever. The folder is in BTS/Mods. I renamed it by removing the 0.8 which had been there. What can I do ?

I'm guessing here but it sounds like whatever you used to unarchive put the resulting folder inside another folder named after the zip (quite a few unarchivers have an option to do this, sometimes on by default). Look inside /Mods/History Rewritten/, if there's another 'History Rewritten' folder in there you'll need to move all the contents (Assets, the .ini file, etc) into the first History Rewritten folder.

To reiterate, check that the path is /Mods/History Rewritten/<mod contents>
And not /Mods/History Rewritten/History Rewritten/<mod contents>

If it's not that, can you let me know if you're seeing the HR title screen (has boats on it) or one of the standard ones. Also does the loading splash (with the progress bar) say History Rewritten? Also are you loading via the 'Load a Mod' option or are you trying to load directly (via the .ini change)?

a) Yes, there was a folder inside the folder, I changed that. Unfortunately that didn´t help.

b) The screen looks as always. The loading splash does say History Rewritten. I am loading via Load a Mod. I also can Unload it afterwards.

c) I don´t know if this helps, but I have the same problem with the Amazon Civilization. Israel and King Solomon OTOH work.

And thank you for all your work.

Hmm puzzling. Does it say 'History Rewritten' (or anything at all) in white text in the top right corner of the main menu screen? Do you have another copy of History Rewritten installed anywhere, perhaps in ~/Documents/Civilization IV Beyond the Sword/Mods/ or in Custom Assets?

Something else to try would be is to enable logging (found in ~/Documents/Civilization IV Beyond the Sword/Mods/CivilizationIV.ini) and see if any of the log files (in same location) have anything to say. Post the xml.log here and I'll compare it to mine.

Latest development: two more attempts, both resulting in a Load Error message: GFC error: failed to initialize primary control theme.

I will try the log next.

I am not aware of any other History Rewritten folder. I downloaded it into my Mod folder, extracted it, and deleted the .zip folder. Later I renamed it to remove the 0.8, both the folder and the .ini file. I also moved the content from HW/HW to HW and deleted the lower HW folder.

My Mods folder doesn´t have an .ini file.

The History Rewritten order does have the following one:

[CONFIG]

; Modular XML Loading
ModularLoading = 1

; Skip Main menu
SkipMainMenu = 0

; Custom Art from user folder is not loaded
NoCustomArt = 1

; Custom XML and Python from user folder are not loaded
NoCustomAssets = 1

; No Custom Scenario option in main menu
NoCustomScenario = 0

; No team play allowed
NoTeams = 0

; Read Game options from XML, not .ini
ForceGameOptions = 1

; Always start in the standard era
ForceStandardEra = 0

; Scenario file (Single player)
ForceScenario = 0

; This mod is only for single player games
SinglePlayerOnly = 0

; Allow public maps to be used with this mod
AllowPublicMaps = 1

; Mod Image file

Okay now we're getting somewhere, that error means one of three things: the mod is installed in the wrong location, something important has been renamed, or there's some sort of permissions error preventing the mod finding its files.

Firstly, there are two Mod folders. The one you want is Applications/Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods/ folder. Inside that folder should be Gods of Old, Road to War and all the other mods that come with BTS.

The other mods folder is ~/Documents/Civilization IV Beyond the Sword/Mods/. History Rewritten will not work from there and will cause the error you described above.

If you're using the Steam version on Mac then the path is a little different (see very first post of this thread). If you're using one of the Windows versions then I don't know what the exact path is but it'll be wherever Gods of Old, Road to War, etc are.

Sounds like you've already sorted the renaming/folder issue but here's the exact path of the .ini file (on Mac), just in case: Applications/Civilization IV/Beyond the Sword/Mods/History Rewritten/History Rewritten.ini. Check there are no extra spaces in there or anything.

If it's a permissions issue then in OSX (very unlikely) you can use CMD-I on the History Rewritten folder to adjust the permissions for all the contents. If you're using Windows though unfortunately I'm not able to help. I've read that BTS has problems running mods under Vista; there should be info elsewhere on the CFC forums that could help with that.

Hi Xyth, I've got History Rewritten 0.8 installed on OS X 10.5.8 and it's unstable to the point of being unplayable - I've tried to start six different games and only two of those managed to get past the opening game splash ("the sun rises..." bit) without immediately CTD. Of those, one game crashed after maybe 200 turns, the other within the first 5 turns (with an in-game memory allocation failure). Otherwise, all the info I can give is that the inbuilt Mac crash report tells me that thread 4 has failed?

Everything related to the game is up to date and installed correctly, and vanilla Civ (inluding the inbuilt mods) works a dream, so all I can imagine it to be is that Snow Leopard (which I'm guessing you developed this mod on) handles memory allocation differently to Leopard. Any thoughts?

How much memory do you have and what size maps are you trying?

4 gigs, and they've all been 'huge' maps. Reckon I'm over doing it?

4GB is plenty unless you're running a ton of things in the background. The in-game 'Memory Allocation Failure' error means that BTS is trying to use more than 2GB, which (due to being 32bit) is the maximum it can use. Unfortunately a mod like HR requires a lot more memory than standard BTS and that's why these MAFs happen from time to time. I do all I can to minimize them but they're inevitable for any large mod.

However the CTDs are indicative of your computer struggling to cope. Despite being an older game, modded BTS really requires a decent graphics card and CPU. What type of Mac and graphics card have you got?

Snow Leopard would probably help a little; it's a bit more efficient memory wise but mostly it has much better graphics drivers. Ultimately though, huge maps are a huge strain on all but the most recent Macs :(

I'm running a fairly recent iMac, specs are 3.02GhZ dual core, 512mb GeForce 8800 and as mentioned 4gb of RAM. I also generally close everything down in the background before playing any game, and as a general rule it handles most games fairly well. Although it seems strange to me that a fresh game would chew through 2gb without even drawing the map! :sad:

I understand what you're saying though, and I wasn't expecting any sort of wizardry to fix it, more just an observation that may or may not help you with further development.

For posterity I'll try a smaller game and report back what happens!

Cheers

EDIT: Ok so I tried two smaller games, one on a 'large' map and the other on a 'standard' map. The large map crashed when I tried to found my first city, and the standard crashed after discovering Horseback Riding and clicking 'Show me the bigger picture' when I was about to change civics. Seems my computer just doesn't like the mod much :(.

I'd imagine that iMac (early 2008 model I believe) would be able handle a standard map size with ease. There certainly shouldn't be any performance issues or crashes that early on either. Something strange is going on. I'd suggest deleting the mod completely, download and reinstall again just in case something got corrupted.

If that doesn't work post a crash log or two and I'll see if I can glean anything from them.

Incidentally I'd strongly recommend upgrading to Snow Leopard regardless. It's so much faster and more efficient than Leopard.
