Hockey mom wants daughter allowed in boys' change room
B.C. mother takes case to human rights tribunal

VANCOUVER - A Lumby, B.C., mother believes her daughter got the short end of the hockey stick while she was a member of the town's bantam house team, thanks to a B.C. Amateur Hockey Association policy requiring male and female players to change in separate rooms.

Jane Emlyn says female minor hockey players' rights are violated when they're forced to use separate changing rooms.

She's presenting her case to a mediator from the Human Rights Tribunal this morning, facing off against representatives from the B.C. amateur hockey association and the Lumby Minor Hockey Association at the Vernon courthouse.

"There's a lot of girls that play, and I think the majority of them see this as discrimination," Ms. Emlyn said.

According to Al Berg, a member of the B.C. association'- coaching committee, the policy was introduced in January 2001 by Hockey Canada, after a Human Rights Commission mediation session in Ontario. It states players over the age of 11 of different gender are not allowed to change in the same room at the same time. The policy came as a result of increased female participation on integrated teams.

Fourteen-year-old Jewel Emlyn, who plays on the Lumby Stars with two other girls, says being kept out of the changing room before and after games or practice means they miss out on a lot of team camaraderie.

"It's fun in the changing room. You get to talk and socialize with all the kids and talk about the game, and talk about the practices and just discuss hockey. And if you're in a changing room with three people, and there's another team there, it's a little awkward and not fun," she said.

Her mother adds that, while girls are allowed in the room 15 minutes before game time, much of the coaching goes on while players are changing. Female coaches are also banned from the room except during those 15 minutes.

Randy Barton, president of Lumby Minor Hockey, says his association has been fairly relaxed about enforcing the policy. But Ms. Emlyn says she's seen girls forced to change in boiler rooms and storage spaces, sometimes with members of the opposing team.

Ms. Emlyn would prefer shared changing rooms, with a dress code requiring all girls to have a minimum of shorts and T-shirt on, and boys to wear at least boxers. The minority gender would have to leave the room before members of the opposite sex shower.

A similar policy was introduced in New Brunswick last October, after the Human Rights Commission ruled a 14-year-old female player had her rights violated when she was forced to change separately.

If the dress code is followed, players will see less skin in the locker room than they do on the beach.

"We're not just, like, naked, running around," Jewel said, suggesting those who don't feel comfortable in a co-ed locker room could change elsewhere.

The father of one of her female teammates, who asked not to be named, said he's uncomfortable with the idea of his daughter changing in front of a group of boys at this age without a strict policy.

"I know what boys are like at that age," he said.

Ms. Emlyn said most of the youngsters on the team say they're fine with mixed changing rooms, but she has received several anonymous e-mails condemning her petition.

She's also felt a strain in relationships in her small, North Okanagan home town, 25 kilometres east of Vernon. Lumby has been known for its strong, tight-knit hockey community since the early 1900s.

"It's silly that I'm even having to fight this, actually," Ms. Emlyn said.
The father's comment are right on the money!
He knows what goes on in a locker room filled with teenage boys reeking of hormones. ;)

Yeah, I'm sure the males on the team love the idea.

The whole problem would be solved simply by not coaching in the locker room and doing it where all the players can attend.

Isn't this why there is now a girl's hockey league? They have different rules anyhow, like no checking - their bodies aren't built the same.

Stupid mother.

What if a dad wanted his son to change in the same field hockey or volleyball locker room? god forbid

I'll change in a girls volleyball room...

I think the mother's idea is swell but for all the wrong reasons.

this reminds me when i had to change in the girls changing room when i had swimming lessons i felt like a right idiot, all because my dad wouldnt take me

A agree with the hockey mom. It is just silly, but then I've been in tactical military environments with females and think nothing of it.

More insane political correctness!

When they invented different gender changing rooms, there was a reason...

.

That's just brilliant.
Ding ding ding, we have a loser, congratulations, you are leading the human race on to extinction through stupidity!

That really needs to be made into a loss condition in Civ 4:
Defeat!
You have suffered a Stupidity Defeat!

I'm wondering just what is going to happen next.

"Father sues school for not educating 3rd graders about transsexuality" perhaps?
Or maybe "Boy cut off own legs, sues state for not fully funding his prosthetics"?
"Three people scarred for life by failed suicide attempt, sue <someone> for not informing them of the dangers of suicide" isn't sounding too unlikely either, and it scares me.

Boys view: Hell yea, let the ladies get chaged in front of us! get the camera!
Girls view: No way, i dont want them staring at me!
Girl's mother: Its descrimination! i wont my daughter to be getting undressed in front of lots of hyper 14yr old boys!

Anyway, even if 1 girl wants to change in the boys changing rooms, most girls will not, so it wont solve anything, it'll just isolate those girls that dont want to even more.

Well, the article quotes the girl as being on the side of the mother, and also points out that the dress code, if enforced, would obviate the benefits of "getting a camera". Just by the title of the thread and article my instinct was to side with the league, but after reading it I think the mother has developed a resonable alternative.

This, however, is a good point. Allowing girls to change with boys essentially requires them to change together, if they really want to be a part of the team. And thinking it won't create any problems is giving 14 year olds way too much credit, I think.

Ultimately, I think the burden should fall on the league to allow full participation by both genders even if that means the coaches all have to hang out in the locker room and become dress code police.

Of course some kids would "accidentally" forget the dress code. I know I would if I was that age (no pedo)

Yeah, but the solution to that is enforcing the rule, not keeping them seperate.

Yes, if there was legislation saying something along the lines of a coach, or person with responsiblity must be in the room then theres much less of a problem.

Well as a female I and I would say most of the other girls I knew in high school would definitely NOT be comfortable changing in the same room with boys. One thing about girls of that age (and probably boys too) is that they are probably more self-conscious of their bodies then any other time. I remember changing in the toilet because I was self-conscious of my body and I was nowhere near the only one. And this was in a room full of *girls*. I would like to point out that the ONLY confirmation we have in the article that "most" of the female players feel bad or would like shared changing rooms is from the woman or her daughter. Hardly unbiased sources.

The other thing that people forget when they say "But it's less skin than on the beach" that it's a matter of setting and atmosphere. The atmosphere when at the pool is very different from the atmosphere in a changing room.

The other thing is if there was shared changing rooms when I was at school you can bet that my parents would have refused to let me play sports at all. Yes, I have conservative parents, but I don't think this would be an unusual response.

The obvious answer is as others have suggested, to simply not have coaching in the changing room but do it outside.

What the hell?
You think hormonal 14 year olds aren't gonna do something of this?
Dude, If girls changed with us, then there'd be no reason I dropped sports!
And how you gonna enforce a mandatory dress code?
A number of kids I know wore thongs at that age, and I happened to wear y-fronts (oh, bad memories..)

Eh, I'm okay with it. :mischief:
