HOF Questions and Answers Thread

I've searched around on here and can't find the answer to this. Is there any benefit / drawback to submitting eligible games to the HoF even when they don't qualify for the Top 10 in a category?

Ozbenno already gave the best reason for submitting a game that is 11th place or less in a HoF table: QM and EQM.

Note for EQM that the Inca Empire is ignored. If the table is flooded by Inca wins, an 11th place or less non-Inca win could be a really great EQM game that could rank as high as 1st amoung non-Inca wins. The easiest way to see this is using the Ad-Hoc Query with just the one table entry selected with the Inca filter checked.

Another reason to submit a game that is less than 10th place is that it counts towards career Score total (Not a particularly useful metric; definitely not correlated to skill, but rather a correlation to persistence & stamina).

It definitely reduces one's ratio of games in the HoF tables though. Another statistic of marginal usefulness, but some players actually care about this ratio, believe it or not.

Hi

I was wondering if it would be possible (and easy to implement) to add a "timeline filter" to the Histogram tab in the "game details" page of the HoF (civfanatics child) site. (I took the 1st game in the top left corner of the HoF main page as an example).
Something similar to the SGOTM progress and results page option. :D (the "starting at" and "ending at" filters).

It would be easier to spy  on other people's games progress (GPT and number of cities are particularly interesting). A bonus to the other tools we have, and which are great.

cheers

Diplomatic Bonus Exploit

Liberating\gifting a city to a Civ you are at war with other than in a peace deal is banned as an Exploit. Repeated use of this tactic can result in diplomatic bonuses that are unbalanced.

i am not that good in English. What is that mean?

@Turkish guy

Never tried it but I understand it like this: It probably means you are prohibited to liberate cities in city overview screen to an AI you have just taken those cities from while still at war with him.

Exploit is in a fact that you can capture and liberate same city as much as you want. Since liberating a city grants +1.5 diplo modifier for each liberating, you can enter a war with civ who is cautious with you, recieve -3 diplo for declaring war, and during the war, capture and liberate same cities until that civ is friendly towards you and then sign peace. Basically, AI will love you because you invaded them and have played ping pong with their cities. killing people and destroying infra in the process. Absurd. Perfect for diplo victory and obviously unbalanced exploit/abuse.

It is possible to liberate/give cities to a Civ one is at War with, without a Cease Fire or Peace Treaty with that Civ. This something that can't be done via the normal user interface, but can be done via some "asoteric" instructions which I never understood nor successfully tried. In other words, I don't have a clue how its done, though I know people that do know and have done it.

For Hall of Fame games, when one is at War with a Civ, one can liberate/give cities only as part of a Cease Fire or Peace Treaty. Liberating/giving cities to a Civ while remaing in a state of War with that same Civ is banned in HoF games.

When one liberates a city to a Civ, one gains +1.5 Diplomacy with that Civ. So one gets +1 Diplomacy liberating one city and +3 Diplomacy liberating just two cities. Doing so while remaing at war, allows one to immediately recapture the city and generate an unlimited number of city liberations which makes winning a diplomatic victory trivial and meaningless. After liberating the same or different cities say 10 times, one gains +15 Diplomacy + -3 for a single DoW = +12 Diplomacy which is alone enough to get an AI to vote for one's diplomatic victory resolution.

There is no diplomatic benefit of giving a city beyond the up to +4 Diplomacy for fair trading which can gotten by giving Wealth or lopsided Technology trades in the AI's favor. I do not believe one can get the fair trading dipolmatic bonus while remaining at War. This may be a game breaking advantage in Always War games where cities can never normally be given away.

The Gauntlets page http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/gauntlet.php currently says there are no gauntlets in progress.

However, both the G-minor and G-major show games in progress:

http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/gauntlet.php?show=minor

http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/gauntlet.php?show=major

The pages seem to be contradictory. Can someone please clarify?

Are these Gauntlets still open?

Thanks,

Just a result of the delayed update. We always clear the queue and set the end dates to the point we do the update. So nothing gets missed.

We gonna have another challenge? :mischief:

Hello, I'm sure this has been asked before, bUt if I fail on my first attempt and retire, can I try again? Or how does this work?

A map can only be played once. We do not allow games where the player has played the same map multiple times. You can submit multiple games but they must be on different maps.

The full Hof rules can be found at our website located in the drop down for the civ version of your choice at the top of the page. I probably have it in my sig too. Sorry, I'm on my phone so can't get the links for you.

Ah, ok, so it's a once in a lifetime thing? Damn if I had only known this before.. xD Ok I'll try next time I guess and first improve on my play. The BTS game is on Deity sadly and I only beat Emperor, so that's gunna be hard.

Although, when I watch Chris67132 play in one of his vids on youtube, it doesnt seem to be so hard. :o
K thx

Hi guys!

Just submitted my first HoF game (#26915). It's a UN Diplo win but the entry says it's a Religious game..??

(screenshot)
Spoiler :

Is that normal or am I correct to report it? Is this the place to report such things?

Thanks in advance!

Congrats on your first HoF entry!

Although the game treats both wins via the Apostolic Palace and the United Nations as Diplomatic the HoF distinguishes these, as wins via the AP tend to come much earlier. Apostolic Palace wins are known as Religious victories.

Congrats again.

Thanks!

Yep that was my understanding but I don't see why the game is labelled as Religious whereas I won via United Nations (edited my earlier post to make it clearer). I couldn't even win with AP because I had >75% of AP population...
