It took four major wars, spread out across about a span of a hundred years to get Switzerland to this status (a major power
).
The first one was when one of my allies, Oldenburg, was attacked by the Danes, and I came to the rescue (with the help of Austria). The war turned into a prolonged struggle in the Netherlands, which was owned by Austria. At the end of the war, I managed to liberate Oldenburg, and vassalize Utrecht.
The second war was the Danes trying to capture Oldenburg again. It turned into a very similar war to the first, except that I wasn't able to gain enough warscore this time around to liberate Oldenburg, but I did manage to convert and vassalize Liege, and vassalize Munster.
The third war was the First War of Religion, started by me, as I took the title of leader of the protestants against those nasty Catholics. I managed to capture Savoie, and vassalize Savoy and Mantua in this war; but overall lose the war. Due to all my OPM allies being a bunch of idiots, the warscore got to the point in which it was irredeemable, and I had to settle for a peace treaty in which I payed Austria a whole 25 ducats.
So, to redeem myself, I started the Second War of Religion about 10 years later, I had about 10 more allies this time (including France) and manage to severely beat back the Catholics, and I mean severely. In the peace treaty, I managed to take Breisgau, Trent, and Tirol, I vassalized Hesse, Wurzburg, I converted a number of states to Protestantism (including two Holy Roman Electors and Austria). I liberated four nations from Austrian control: Burgundy, Greece, Cleves, and Luxembourg, I got Austria to release Modena as a vassal, and I got them to release their claims on some random pieces of land. But best of all, they lost the next election of the HRE to Wuttemburg, a Protestant nation. Which means they lost all their land up in the Netherlands (it was an Imperial Demesne, so it went to Wuttemburg), and pretty much knocked them out of power in the European scene. It was quite awesome

Yes, to the extent where playing without the expansions is utterly ridiculous at this point.

EU3 is a ok game without the expansions. It is great with the expansions.

Be sure to know that you will have to buy all the expansions released before Divine Wind. It is still worth it though.
Or you could wait until "rumored" complete edition comes out that has all the updates, including Divine Wind.
