How often and in what circumstances do you "like" on this forum?

That's probably best as a dedicated thread in Site Feedback. It'd also come across less reactionary/PDMA-esque over there. :p
As long as it doesn't turn into a mess of people not being allowed to discuss PDMA rules and policies, because to do so would be PDMA.

That's ridiculous, and was a valid point brought up in the other thread. There are some things that just can't be discussed in any really viable way in PM, even if you invite the maximum number of people into the conversation. It's not practical, and when it's about rules and policies that affect everyone on the forum, it should be open and people should be able to discuss things, and yes, they should be able to point to specific examples where clarification is needed.

This whole thread is becoming a target for strict punishments, so get out while you can.

Maybe just remove the "Like" function? If it's going to require that we all attend compulsory "The Like Button & You" seminars, maybe it's not really worth it.

I never use "like", on ground of principles.
I hate systems which substitute reasoning and argumentation with popularity contests.
We're going to make you win this popularity contest and there's nothing you can do about it!

Did you participate in the first thread? Some lines of conversation were shut down on the idea that it was PDMA to discuss PDMA in a thread intended to discuss the rules, policies, and complaints about PDMA.

It was a very :wallbash: situation at times.

The thread is here.

I have a reply on the first page of that thread. ;)

Moderator Action: Given that this is not a thread about PDMA, please do not discuss moderator activities in this thread.

I think my most important use of it is for posts I agree with. No sense repeating what has already been said. Next in line are informative and funny posts.

Also, good to get some clarification of whether Likes can become PDMA.

Hey, at least we're not on Reddit where downvotes can bury posts that do not conform to the agenda.

I don't like like-systems. Mainly because I'm not used to them, and don't know the etiquette. They also use it on the Elite forums, and when you liked (repped) a post it says: "Thanks, hopefully you will receive rep back." Which is odd, because me liking another post has nothing to do with any of mine. So now I don't know if this is universal rep/like etiquette, whenever I receive a like I should go looking for good posts from the person who liked me, so I can give it in return.

On the other hand, it saves on: "Yeah" or "Good point!" posts. Plus I can give support while lurking in the peanut gallery.

Anyway, I haven't developed a like system, more often than not forget to like really good posts or jump on a like bandwagon.

Yup, this is super frustrating. A guy on r/spacex posted some pictures that could very likely put him in prison for breaking ITAR (arms trafficking regulations) and everyone who pointed that out got downvoted to oblivion. All the armchair KSP rocket scientists came out to support the OP and downvote all the naysayers who were just trying to keep people out of prison. I get that that sub is supposed to be a safe space for spacex circlejerking but ITAR is not a joke.

The moderators of that subreddit had nothing to say about that?

I rarely post on reddit but when I do it's gold, and tends to end up with a score of 0. That's right, one person reads my comment and then downvotes it.

I opened a thread in the math subreddit on the topic of a number sequence I observed in the wild. Got two satisfactory answers. That has a score of 0 as well.

A moderator laughed in our faces. (I have a group of former and current employees and we all hopped on the thread together)

In that instance, a former welder there posted a bunch of pictures of welds he did for the Falcon Heavy pad modifications. We pointed out this was a definite breach of ITAR. The mods response: LOL as if China doesn't know how to weld!

Then I pointed out that China was put under special ITAR restrictions specifically because they were given/stole welding techniques and gave him the link to back it up. He shut up, but did nothing. Most of the time if you try and speak out against flagrantly illegal posts there they just laugh, ridicule and brigade your posts so they are downvoted to oblivion.

In another instance, a guy lurked around the factory and took pictures of one of the rockets under construction. This was immediately flagged and a bunch of us (I was still there) were posting from inside the factory trying to tell people to take it down. The response?: LOL it can't be covered by ITAR why else would all the windows be uncovered so you could just walk up and take pictures LOL

This guy had managed to evade security, that's how. The windows were all covered up after that and that thread actually was taken down. I assume the company lawyers got involved.

SpaceX fanbois are the freaking worst and are the best example of dunning-kruger I can think of other than the dunning-krugerrands of bitcoin. And at least the bitcoin crowd aren't breaking federal arms embargoes! And that's just in relation to illegal activities; god forbid you point out any flaws in their reasoning and imaginations as it relates to the technical capabilities of the Falcon.

If it makes you feel better, it's not likely you were downvoted. Their algorithms automatically adjust the scores up or down based on mathmagic that no one really knows outside the company. It is very likely your post was downgraded automatically for whatever reason or to clear space for other threads.

The way of the world

Sounds bonkers!

On social forums the threshold for extreme behaviour is lower, so

I have a few conditions which each allow it, and are not necessarily related:

1. Someone says something about a topic and I don't have anything to add, but have bothered to read to at least that far in the thread and agree with the statement.
2. Whatever was said amuses me.
3. An argument is made/presented in a way I didn't consider myself or says something useful to my argumentative position differently than I would.
4. Post provides useful information (by my measure, MMV)
5. For one reason or another, I find a post exceptional/outstanding despite not meeting one of the above criteria.

1 and 2 are most common, how I'd rank after that I'm not sure.
