I have a theory that British people seem to eat pasta (most often spaghetti) bolognese like 4 times a week. It seems like the national "default" food of Britain, by which I mean its the thing people have when nothing else jumps out at them and/or if they want to save money.

Thats not knocking Britain btw, properly made Bolognese is delicious.

Side question: If not pasta Bolognese, what would you consider your default food? Again, by default food I mean the thing you eat for dinner (or lunch if you're a big lunch person) when you are more or less trying to save money and can't think of anything else to make.

For those who don't know, pasta bolgonese is basically pasta with a tomato-based meat sauce.

Often, and thank Allah I'm not British.

Rarely, I'm British.

I prefer chilli con carne which is the same recipe but with kidney beans and chilli. I also prefer rice to pasta.

Default British food is pie & chips or chicken tikka masala ;)

I eat spaghetti a couple of times each month. But with more meat, and less tomato than pasta bolognese. I don't really have a standard food, but my food mostly revolves around meat and rice(sometimes french fries) with different sauces and vegetables. Other than that I eat mashed potatoes, sometimes fried sausages and potato(I'm no big fan of potatoes because I hate them boiled, and to fry them or mash them takes a lot of time). And I'm no fan of really spicy food.

I like it bland!!!!

I went with often but probably not to your 4 times a week standard nor is it proper 'spag bol' but more like whatever veg i have in, mixed with tinned tomatoes some spices and then whatever pasta i have in. Then it lasts for a couple of days, as a student there is nothing better than not having to wash up as much.

I would say that bacon butties are the order of the day for me, you can either have them plain or combine them with a variety of other things.

traditional meal over here i'd go with what Paradigm has mentioned; tikka massala, pie(or fish) and chips but i would add that fry ups and fry up related items as well.

I always thought you were Australian.

Often, it's my main choice of food if I want something quick, easy, cheap and tasting well.
I also like baked potatoes with tomato or cucumber and some meat for the same purposes.

Maybe once a week or less, and then it ends up usually being mince meat on spaghetti, because that's how my dad does it. I think I only ever had it a couple of times made with a proper sauce.

I think the most common food I'm given that's cooked is shepherd's pie, or sausages with mashed potato.

Once or twice a week.

I have it every couple of months or so. Meat is something i only eat when i have money, time, and motivation to cook with premium ingredients.

My default pasta is aglio e olio since it's extremely easy to prepare, and the ingredients can be stored for a while. My default meal are potatoes covered with molten cheese and some veggies on the side (often spinach or carrots).

My default pasta dish is tin of tomatoes, onion, garlic, bacon, tomato puree, topped with cheese. Yum!

EDIT: + mushrooms and peppers.

EDIT2: And paprika.

EDIT3: This is great on baked potatoes as well.

EDIT4: And sausages and mash too.

Maybe once a month or less.

My default quick pasta dish is arrabiatta (toms, garlic, chillies, parsley, oil) or pesto from a jar + cheese.

Can't remember the last time I ate pasta bolognese. Think I did have some rice bolognese recently, though.

Default pasta dish: aglio e olio w/ chicken and peas or green beans. And it's only my default because it's the only one I know how to cook.

I believe I'm gluten intolerant so I tend to eat rice threads and mung bean thread.

Every other week or so.

I have no real default food, there's so much different easily prepared food that I don't need to limit myself to one default food :)

Whats all this talk of it being quick and easy? A really good one takes a couple of hours.

I guess I prob average out to once a week, but clumped over the couple of days after I cook some up. Though the second night often over baked potatoes.

Best use of leftover spag bol is to make lasagne.

A proper spag bog is definitely not quick to make and needs a good amount of cooking to get a really nice rich sauce if you make it from scratch. I usually make it up in large batches and freeze the left over portions. I generally prefer a chilli con carne (with rice) though which I also make in large batches and freeze. I probably only cook 2 or maybe 3 batches a year, but each batch will maybe make half a dozen or so meals.

I would not have put spaghetti bolognese anywhere near the top of the list for default foods, shepherds pie is one I always fall back on, or a steak if I have the money, stew & dumplings in the winter, but I would have thought curry, fish & chips, burgers, bacon butty, chip butty (mmm - pity I don't cook chips at home, I could eat one of those right now), all sorts of things would be higher than bolognese.
