How Privileged Are You?

I'm surprised this ended up here considering where it came from (or at least where I saw it the first time)

Can I just say, this is a really, really awful way of looking at privilege... Absolutely not the way we should be discussing it, and a really great way of pissing a lot of people off for no real benefit.

This is a great way at looking at privilege the idea needs to be mocked and ridiculed at every oppurtunity, mockery is a great way to rob people of the ability to be taken seriously.

In Sweden the numbers are reversed.

What? So you say 51+ when you mean -15?

That seems a bit strange. But workable I suppose.

My score of 0 confirms the crappiness of the measure. White American woman starting at -5? Freal?

Give this thread some value then!

I don't think this is too far off since it's not to be taken seriously anyway - weights of parameters are obviously not constant. However, I question the excessive wealth since overweight, disfigured, ********, paralyzed deaf with a couple of diseases would still be pretty privileged @ +200. I doubt I'd consider myself more privileged in that situation regardless of other factors.

Why is Judaism +25?

EDIT: Oh wow this thread grew fast, seems like I'm not the only one curious...

Well, that's exactly the problem -- a rich black kid might have advantages in some respects (he's rich, so he will have advantages that poor black kids don't have), but he will be disadvantaged in other respects (he is black, so he will face racism that rich white kids don't face). Even leaving aside the stupid scores for some of the categories (which have been discussed already), the idea that being gay outweighs being middle class, white and male, so that you are, on the whole, unprivileged, is laughable and absurd. The idea that there is a linear scale that you can place all discrimination on pretty much pisses on the entire concept of intersectionality, and is pretty bigoted in itself. The image itself hints at its own inadequacy when it has a separate section for "Jewish & Black" under Religion. It's either motivated by an incomplete understanding of intersectionality, or it is simply a troll.

Or eastern europe

There was a lot of emigration of people of Jewish ancestry from Russia. Don't know about Ukraine and Belarus.

I'm a little confused. I think we agree? I just find it interesting that being Jewish grants a stand alone top score. Considering the current climate for many Jews, especially in the places you mention and then considering recent and not so recent history, the scoring strikes me as odd.

Yes. I was pointing out that it's completely US-centric. Being a Jew (either ethnicity or religion) confers no advantage in most places, and some pretty negative consequences in certain other places.

Oh and by the way, with a name like Winner I'd be expecting 400 plus.

My nickname here is an English translation of the meaning of my real first name.

So what's intersectionality? I don't think it's a troll, as such. Just a bit of a simplistic light-hearted introduction to the concept of privilege - an admittedly serious notion. I think it has value, as such.

Oppression Olympics is a term used when two or more groups compete to prove themselves more oppressed than each other. In geek feminist circles, contestants may include:
Women
Men
People of color
People with disabilities
LGBTQ people
Members of minority language groups
Residents of non-Western or even non-North American countries
People who were unpopular in high school

Competing in the Oppression Olympics attaches something like a moral dimension to oppression, in which the most oppressed are worthier.

I am not privileged, I am talented.

There is no link to the test in the OP, but I scored a 100. Although I don't know what CIS stands for.

I hate stupid liberal trash as this test. Why should I have to feel guilty for being born white? I refuse to do it.

Cis = cis-gendered as in "normal". So if you don't know, then you very probably are.

And not enough weight thrown in for being short (for men) and ugly. I'm both, and trust, me it doesn't make up for being white. Also no weight thrown in for being a geek. Since I have all of those things, I'm disadvantaged (at least socially), and treated like I don't exist.

I am not privileged, I am talented.

Being talented is being privileged. Did you become talented because of how hard you worked, or because of how you were born? You're talented because of the later, which is what 'privilege' is.

Also, +10 for bi and -150 for gay? I call BS.
