How should Job Seeker's Allowance work?

Well most people at Oxford aren't going to have problems finding employment so they don't really care about it do they.

I think the Michael Jackson dance move was a tilting stage or shoes nailed down.

It took me a long while to find a temp job while I was deciding what to do with my life last autumn, and I live with a graduate that is on JSA at the moment.

I think the Michael Jackson dance move was a tilting stage or shoes nailed down.

It was wires in the video, shoe clamps on stage.

Well you did maths which isn't that useful for getting a job immediately in a mathematical field.

I had to languish on the dole for 6 months before I could go on a course for C programming. I think Labour changed it so you can get employment training straight away though now.

Your CV is always going to get looked at because of Oxford though, it's definitely an advantage.

Indeed, but I do like having the security of JSA to fall back on should I ever find myself involuntarily unemployed again in the future. Plus I think it's vital for people that haven't been quite so lucky in life as I have.

50 pounds seems incredibly low for a weekly allowance. When I was on Newstart, the Australian equivalent of JSA which works by the same general rules (apply for 10 jobs a fortnight), I was getting about $460 a fortnight, plus $70 for rent assistance. That works out to about 130 pounds a week plus rent assistance.

The reports I've read show that it's working quite well. Certainly better than it did under the Tories.

Frankly, if the Dole was administered by a bloodthirsty Gorilla called Crusher who required some sort of sexual favour to issue it, it would work better than under the Tories.

Indeed she hasn't. She also wanted this work to be paid at below minimum wage... we spent a while arguing about that one.
Well that would be illegal and immoral. Thats the problem with the whole 'work on the dole' idea, you would need to pay them minimimum wage so in effect your either just going to end up creating government run labour groups and thus increase the amount of state workers, or end up creating underpaid slavelike labour not unlike the Nazi's did in the 30's.
