I have an idea (CFC OT Member of the Year Poll.)

@aimee: That would make no difference what so ever.

It does not address the problem of inherent elitism.
You may as well ask
"What if we award each winner a daffodil"
it would have as much effect

I don't understand this. It would give more people a chance to win something, even if it is something silly like "Biggest Troll" (which I wouldn't suggest seriously)

How about "Most Underrated Poster"

Of course people feel disappointed when they don't win. That's true of any competitive activity. But mature people (of any age) rise above their disappointment and behave in a sportsmanlike way and say, "Congratulations" and move on.

I speak from experience when I say that it's far more disappointing not to be nominated for something I'm qualified for than it is to not win once I have been nominated.

Fair point, I'll pose the obvious question. How would it be possible to stop those that use a certain chat room from ruining the competition?

Look, with regards to this, in here, MP, forum games, or whatever else, you shouldn't blame people just because they coordinate their votes - that's like blaming people for having an organized political party while the opposition doesn't. Other people are perfectly free to coordinate their votes in whatever matter they choose.

aimee's idea that this could be something just for fun, rather than something quite serious, might be a good one. There have been numerous member based threads in the past which haven't caused that much of a problem if any problem at all. Something positive could be done through that method.

But thats really not the point is it? We shouldn't have to co-ordinate to vote against whatever your chatrooms current whim is. Whereever you guys turn up, it ruins it for everyone else.

It's not possible... :p

Seriously though, not everyone that uses a, certain chatroom, would vote the same way

Enough would vote one way or another to the swing polls and render them pointless.

Drones, the lot of you :p That place is crying out for insurrection.

Then why not have a similar activity in each of the forums? I'm sure there are posters in, say, Civ 4 or Civ 3 (for example) who would qualify for a "poster of the year" acknowledgement.
You have an idealised vision of how the forums are. In the civ3 forums there are monthly "Unit maker/PCX Maker/etc of the month" awards. 95% of the time such competitions are very civil - but there are some posters who just can't admit defeat and just start flaming the others or just moping around for pity votes. Imagine what would happen when forum-wide "awards" are given.

I've been noticing a pattern. Blaming a certain chatroom became a lot of people's excuse for not winning, regardless of anything happening in the chatroom or not.

..they've openly admitted it on several occasions? Its pretty clear to see when suddenly they all turn up in a specific thread!

Not seen anyone whining about losing competitions tho.. since there havn't been any.. i've seen games ruined however...

Moderator Action: Let's not turn this into a Fifty Chat discussion, please.

Yes, but competitions do seem to reduce the maturity level of many participants, as we have seen in the Civ III C&C monthly competitions over the years. Those competitions just about work - most of the time - but I have always been surprised at how childishly some people react to them, and the level of fallout that I have had to deal with on some notable occasions. I shudder to think what would happen in OT.

The point is that something like this may be started with the intention of just having a bit of fun, but it doesn't necessarily actually play out like that in practice. People take things personally - that's just human nature.
