I loathe the 16th amendment.

Uh yeah, Bamspeedy got this one. A sales tax on consumption not only harms the poor more (Unless you needlessly complicate the system, but you incentive people to not consume, thus reducing the growth rate of your economy
I don't know about you guys but we don't save enough in Australia so maybe less consumption would be better!

Illinois is nowhere near the high end for state tax rates at 3% (but does have a high 6.25% sales tax).

IIRC Vermont, Dist. of Columbia, Oregon and California are the highest state tax rates between 9-9.5% though Manhattan has an income tax and city tax. Taxachusetts used to be double digits but it seems the governor seems to have done a good job there dropping it to 5.3%.

Florida is interesting because they dont have an income tax but they have what's called a mill tax ($1.27 per $1000 of assessed value based on property held)and their own estate tax.

If you're an athlete you live in Texas or Nevada. No income tax.

I like Income Tax. Means when I need to go to hospital/doctor I don't end up paying a fortune. Meant I got a good free education. And so forth.

Same here. But apparently the US government must be one of the worst on the planet, since the only people I've met who were seriously thinking that taxes are stupid and government useless were American (just look at this thread).

The more I think about it the more I would like a system with no taxes and where you pay when you need a goverment service. There are loads of goverment services which I find useless but I have to pay for them.

Government usually provides services when the service is 1) a collective good that the private market will not provide (e.g. national defense) or 2) a service that is beyond the means of the people it is intended for to obtain it privately (e.g. public housing or medicaid).

Clear case of selfishness. You might like it, but your nation would go down the drain as soon as it would be implemented.

And just because I'm curious, since you're 15, how much do you pay in taxes on your income?

Nevada has a different kind of tax ... on people who are bad at math.
:p The money you bring to Vegas stays in Vegas. Unless your a card counter or Hold 'em shark like me. ;)

I think our federal government is one of the worst when it comes to earmarks. The size and scope of each states wants and needs are of the utmost importance to the congressmen if they want to get re-elected.

You ought to try Alaska - no state income tax or sales tax, and a "negative tax" - everyone gets the Permanent Fund Dividend payout every year, of somewhere just south of $2000, IIRC.

I'm okay with New Hampshire's no state income or sales (except for fast foods and such) taxes but taxes on certain investments and substantial property taxes.

profit on stocks. I pay a lot in taxes.(even though I cheat)
Tax avoidance is perfectly legal in the US but tax evasion would plop you in jail.

Florida has a monstrous sales tax because of tourism to make up for it.

Illinois has a flat rate of 3% on income.

I'm really wondering where I saw that. Maybe Illinois recently changed its tax laws?

Edit: Apparently Alaska has the heaviest tax burden of all states (10.66%), but that includes all state taxes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_tax_levels (Taxes as percent of income, which is far more informative than taxes per capita)

:dunno: I'd rather have income tax than tourists, but I suppose it's a personal preference thing . . .

You don't like tourists? Having tourists is pure genius. Let's consider the situation for a moment.

Here in Vegas we have convinced hundreds of millions of people from all over the world to pay to fly to our city, spend huge amounts of their hard earned cash to support our local economy, buy us government services and pay for our infrastructure, and to then fly back to whatever boring no-where-ville they came from.

Nevada rarely has budget problems, and I've seen lots of government budget surpluses. All thanks to the tourists.

Plus all the excitement than draws the tourists also attracts scorchingly hot women. When I ask them where they are from it's almost always from somewhere else, from towns just like yours. Please allow me to thank you for sending them. I hope you don't miss them because they aren't coming back.

To each his own I guess, but really, I love this place. All thanks to the tourists. :D

I pay 39% in taxes. And I don't mind.

I got a good, free education. When ever Im sick, I go to a good doctor and so on. It's all free. And not only for me, but for everybody. That's pretty amazing, and I wouldn't give it up for anything.

It always amazes me to see the sheep line up to happily have the efforts of their labors confiscated from them by a nanny state. I would gladly give up free government level education and free government level medical care in exchange for not paying for them through taxes.

Thanks, but I'd rather think for myself, choose where I want to go to private school, pay for it myself, buy my own medical coverage for myself so I can go to a private hospital, etc. If you are satisfied with letting a government bureaucrat decide your education choices and health care options, then you are exactly the worker drone that bloated, inefficient governments worldwide love to exploit.

Punch line: It's not free, you pay for it either way. the only variable is if you get to decide for yourself the location and quality of services you paid for. :crazyeye:

So be someone good at math and don't gamble, yet still take advantage of not paying state income tax. :)
