This is a message from EQ
If you do not read this, I will personally have fun inflicting the consequences upon you.

A few notes for the players, which will be added to the first post (in bits and pieces) upon my return home. I have noticed through conversations and diplomacy that some of you are apparently unfamiliar with the atmosphere of this time frame and point in history. For your convenience I have determined to post some clarifications and general knowledge which you may find useful. Some of these are theories of histories and do not apply 100% of the time, but they apply most of the time and you should keep them all under consideration, no matter what country you are playing. I expected better from some of you, but I understand that this is a bit different time period than you may be used to.

1. Nationalism does not exist. Modern nationalism and the creation of nationhood was a product of the French Revolution, which did not take place here. Therefore there are no calls for self-determination or German/Italian national unity. The idea of a national identity is simply not of great importance.

2. Warfare in this timeframe is not of coherent fronts and battlelines which can be associated with conflicts such as the First and Second World Wars. Instead, most of the wars of this time period were fought as a series of battles, known as “campaigns” intent on achieving a specific objective, not total conquest of another nation. While a nation may have several armies in the field, they were almost never all formed up on another nation’s borders in preparation for invasion. Armies would mass, then fight a decisive battle(s), and to the victor ultimately would go the spoils. Keep this in mind for any military orders.

3. Wars in timeframe as mentioned above, were not fought for total conquest of other nations or complete global dominion. While the notion of balance of power is sometimes believed to have remained solely within the minds of the leaders of Britain in the late nineteenth century, it was actually the predominant philosophy in Europe for considerable time. It was argued (and pretty well proven from 1815-1845) that without any power which was significantly stronger than all the others, Europe could remain at relative peace. While wars were occasionally fought, they would generally be for the exchange of border provinces or colonial possessions, not full annexation or total domination. My recommended option to follow, if your opponent is badly beaten or a threat to the status quo, would to be to install a new dynasty on the throne of his country (thus also ousting the player).

4. Colonies generally cost money for an extended period of time after their initial establishment. These expenses can and will be shown within your stats, and colonies can generate negative EP per turn. This can quickly lead to your nation’s bankruptcy if you lack the funds to sustain expansion. Have fun!

5. Another note on colonies, expansion is going to be slow and steady, no matter how much funds you pour in a turn. Yes, if you provide double the amount of funds someone else does, you’ll go twice as fast. Remember though, that five times zero is still zero.

6. If two people attempt to colonize the same spot in the same year, the end result will be a battle between the two, leading to one or another being wiped out. It’ll be left up to the players involved whether or not they want to pursue the matter through other means, whether diplomacy or combat.

7. To clarify my position on royal families. With fictional royal families, go wild with what you’ve got. Unfortunately for ya’ll the only dynasties which did not exist in our timeline that exist now are the Tudors in England and the current ruling family of Spain. I do have a proto-type ancestoral family tree for both kingdoms, but if Milarqui or Tyrion want to invent a family member to wed off, I trust them both to talk to me first to work something out. The rulers of Scotland and Sweden are also both non-historical, though they were both actually alive in our timeline at some point. The remaining exceptions are the Kingdom of the Rhine and Westphalia. Neither has historical monarchs and I have not set up any true royal background for either power. Feel free to contact me with whatever sort of background you desire. Any powers not specifically mentioned in the above six? Fear not, I made absolutely sure that all of the rulers can be quickly discovered on wikipedia. Do a quick search and you’ll likely find out if you have any marriageable children lying around!

8. While I will not block the formation of epic alliances, I’m just going to state that the formation of power blocs is not historically accurate for this time frame. It can be argued that the war against the French Republic and Napoleon and the coalitions involved argue against this statement, but they were matters of convenience not total military cooperation and alliance based on nationhood. I would personally prefer if ya’ll could practice similar matters, see the above paragraph on the status quo. A quick note on the Catholic League however. Assuming the basis of the organization is the furthering the interests of Catholicism, and is not a definite creation of an alliance bloc, I can accept its creation as being in character for the time frame. If it is a loose coalition of nations helping each other in economic or political matters, that can be understood, as long as it is not a unified cabal of nations planning to conquer and divide the world.

9. I think I may have overstated the importance of religion in previous posts. While it may be politically unwise to say, be a highly Catholic country based on religious expansion and ally with the Ottoman Empire, it may matter less if you have a more secular culture. Acting upon the potential diplomacy and threats caused by religion is completely up to the player and the nation he plays. Some are definitely more religious than others, if you’re unsure about the status of your nation in this regard, check your nation’s wiki-history or send me a Private Message with your questions.

10. Lastly, for those of you who are new to my NESes in general, Rome wasn’t built in a day, or even in a year. Creating a strong nation takes time, and you’re not always going to be able to be on top. The longer you take to build up your power, the stronger you’ll be, but the more people who will be itching to take you down a peg or two. In short, be prepared for economic growth to take a considerable amount of time, and don’t expect to see the results of your policies, projects, or expansion instantly. Sometimes it may even cost you more than you’d hoped you gain. I have been known to make schemes backfire upon individuals, not out of spite but because that’s how life works.

Bavaria declares its entry into the Catholic League.

To Westphalia, Netherlands, and Frankfurt
From Bavaria

Our interests are similar despite our religious differences. We would still like to sign agreements of economic co-operation and non-aggression. Maybe sometime the King of the Rhine or his successors will change their mind, and so our Rhine trade agreement suggestion retains our support.

To Baden
From Bavaria

Our declaration of protection, if it becomes necessary, still stands.

To Wurttemberg
From Bavaria

Our non-aggression pact still stands.

To: Bavaria
From: Dutch Republic

Indeed, any way to increase the stability in Germania and Central Europe itself is desirable. We will sign such agreements.

To Netherlands and Westphalia
From Bavaria

We are delighted to hear these things. How do you think that economic co-operation could best get underway?

To Hannover and Frankfurt
From Bavaria

We propose the same deal that we formerly proposed regarding the Rhine, but regarding the Weser and Werra instead.

I wonder what economic "co-operation" means. Is that where everyone gets free stuff? Free hats with a bottle of Rhineland beer?

To Netherlands and Westphalia
From Bavaria

A general reduction of tariffs, then, on everything passing through our borders, by, say, 20%, could be in order, then?

Or ... er ... perhaps not, given what EQ has just said.

To: Switzerland
From: Venice

We are willing to offer you a trade agreement, so that your markets may have acess to the bounty of foriegn goods that flow through Venice's port.

Y'know I didnt think I needed to include points 11 and 12 with the earlier ten, but time maeks fools of us all, so here they are.

Point 11. The ideals of mercantilism were practically debunked with the success of the American Revolution in our timeline. In this timeframe, one of the biggest sources of government money came from tariffs and collection of trade taxes. Free trade and ideas close to it may well have been laughed at by most heads of state at this point in time. While free trade could be argued in favor of, a reduction of tariffs with major trading partners would have been quite out of the question for any European power. Please take this into consideration, particularly since any country which engages in too much free trade will quite likely wind up with a broke government this early in the game.

12. The Industrial Revolution has not yet arrived. Many of the smaller states and nations still make whatever they need locally and import less significant goods. Industrial manufacturing is not something which exists right now as a income source for any government. Even in Britain at this time, any form of industry was rather limited to several select activities. Likewise, there are no "Factories" or "assembly lines" and nor will there be any if you mention them in your orders. All existing powers rely on the strength of agricultural crops and local production, NOT industry. I feel I cannot repeat this enough. While I may have "industrial" as a research stat, perhaps it may be better to think of it as "economic" for now. Comprende?

13. Wow. I'm scared that I actually had to share this for some of you. Fortunately, this is an easy one. READ THE DAMN RULES. That is all.

14. Yet another one I feel that shouldnt have had to be shared. Regardless of rivers (I'll say if a boat can go on them), landlocked nations cannot build a navy.

About the industrial thing, yeah, it'd be better if you changed the name to economy.

About the Catholic League, the only thing it plans is to protect all Catholic nations from heathen/heretic enemies, expand the Word of Our Lord all over the world through colonies and protect the Pope. Nothing about attempting to dominate the world.

About point 10... I still hate you for the little game you did on me with the African Dams, you know?. I spent 80 bloody EP on them and it didn't give back a fu**ing coin!

OOC: Are the Weser and Werra navigable?

Can we retrieve the monies lost through reduced duties through increased taxes on the land, or through increased duties on other trade routes? I think that a landlocked country like Bavaria needs to get New World produce from somewhere.

From The Kingdom of Prussia
To Sweden

The King wishes to continue the friendship and good trade within the Baltic between our two nations. To start a simple Non Aggression Pact, after which the King hopes more business might be conducted between us.
