He was like you with your semi-serious apocalyptic visions of Germanic-Slavic race wars, except he was totally serious and spent like half his time* on position papers trying to get Bismarck to dump the Russian alliance and launch a preemptive war against Russia. I have my doubts as to whether he was entirely mentally stable during the late 1870s and 1880s. Even his war plans were subpar and needed to have a good injection of sanity under Graf von Waldersee.
