Why is there a large number of people adopting an Indian-looking guy as their avatar, and why is it so popular?

New avatar - John Hackett, General Sir, GCB, CBE, DSO and bar, MC. Studied Classics at Cambridge, but throught that his degree was no good for a career in academia and joined the army, commissioning as a Hussar, later transferred to the Parachute Regiment, helped form what became the SAS and commanded a brigade at Arnhem, where he was wounded. Later commanded the British Army of the Rhine and was Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Left the army and found that a General with a first in classics actually can go into academia, and became Principal of a London university, marching with his students in protests against the government. Died a general legend in 1997.

Pang Tong is back, baby.

New custom user title. Same theme.

Also, author (arguably "editor-in-chief") of two embarrassingly bad Cold War "alternate histories".

The second of which, written in 1982, predicted that the USSR would collapse and Middle-Eastern oil would become hugely important - not bad!

Suvorov's Soviet collapse scenario was, of course, way off the mark - he had a February Revolution redux, with a bread riot sparking a general conflagration in Moscow after the Allies nuked Minsk. (The limited nuclear exchange - one per side (!) - made absolutely no sense then, and it makes absolutely no sense now, either.) Instead of, you know, the USSR's leaders deliberately running the country into the ground and spinning it apart in an orgy of revived nationalism. That's why they ask you to show your work. :p

And if, by 1982, in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War and several years after the oil embargo crisis, if you couldn't figure out that the ME's oil was starting to be pretty important to the world economy, you had no business talking about economics or geopolitics. We don't give Tom Clancy and Larry Bond credit for predicting that ME oil would start the war in Red Storm Rising, either.

Anyway. Avatar stuff! Since the comment was made that my avatar is both insufficiently obviously Korra and insufficiently obviously female (the nerve!) I have (again) elected to change it to another Korra avatar.

Of these, the second one is probably best but I have worries about it being too much like my profile pic. THOUGHTS?
