I looked up Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, at wikipedia to see how old she is and what her education/background were. I found out she was a preacher's kid in East Germany (probably a pretty tough row to hoe) and her background is in physics, but this is the thing I thought y'all might like to know:

"In her office she has a picture of Russian Empress Catherine the Great, a German-born princess described by Merkel as 'a strong woman.'"

Interesting. There's some physical resemblance, too, though I will say that Merkel definitely looks like a beauty queen next to the Catherine in Civ 3!

Catherine in Civ 4 on the other hand... :groucho:

Wasn't her father a communist as well?

I couldn't say no for certain because I know almost nothing about him. However, I also found out that at a time when most kids went through a secular coming of age ceremony that had been introduced by the State, Merkel went through a Lutheran confirmation. I doubt that

Also, it's my understanding that even those clergy who cooperated with the State in the Iron Curtain countries were not necessarily Communists or even Comunist sympathizers, just misguided or scared. Some allow themselves to believe that the mandate to obey the lords of a nation includes actions that compromise the Gospel, and other simply allow themselves to be intimidated.

Did you know that she did her PhD in Quantum Physics? "About the energy hyperplane of the Methyl Radical Molecule" was the title - actually, exactly what I had in mind should I have guessed her educational background - most Physicists I know have similar charisma and personalityas Merkel - naturally in strong contrast to chemists - a fine selection of people where I belong to :D .

There is something interesting about Merkel? You should tell her PR consultants, because they are desperatly looking for it!

As of yet, Merkel has still some way to go before we can call her "Angela the Great".

The reason I felt the fact was interesting was because this is civfanatics and we all deal with the AI Catherine on a regualr basis, genius. I'm sure it wouldn't be interesting to anyone who doesn't play the game or follow German politics closely, but I didn't post it on happypuppyfanatics.com, now did I?

The CIV picture is fairish, there are some signs of youthful beauty here, but it's not too easy to find a painting of the youthful Catherine, anyone?

Is Merkel doing an impression of a bulldog chewing a wasp in that photo, who knows maybe she was a fox in her youth too?

EDIT

Here's one, she's not ugly in her youth at all, maybe they touched it up a bit though, you know with fine brushes :)

Merkel looks soooo tense. Maybe she could use one of my patented back rubs...

Didn't mean to offend! Apologies if i came across the wrong way. I was just playing with the fact that Merkel usually is perceived as a bit.. band and not very interesting.
