Internet Vigilantism

That really doesn't seem to be Berzerker's actual question.

His actual question is more along the lines of "how can I equate private information about someone with information that would be on his or her wiki page?"

If your name is David Duke, there's going to be a risk of misunderstanding.

Agreed. So who is responsible for trying to avoid that misunderstanding?

If I proclaim "hey the guy in the picture waving the Nazi flag is Billy Zelig" and I know that he is from Hoboken is it not incumbent upon me to say, in the same breath, "and he is NOT our Zelig, he's from Hoboken." Or can I just wash my hands assuming that sooner or later you will say "hey, that's not me" and everything will be okay.

Well I changed my legal name, it wasn't too difficult.

I suggest people pick unique names.

There's seven billion people and counting. How many names do you think there are to work with?

When I picked 'Tim Scott' as a screen name I had no idea that three years later someone would find a registered sex offender with that as his first and middle name. Truthfully I also didn't know that there was a US senator by that name.

Lots (roughly 139 quadrillion, or 20 million times the current population) of names to work with if you accept ones such as Grtr Hfbhyda.

Well, yeah. But on behalf of the 6,999,999,999 who don't accept them; your plan needs work. Zelig might be unique, and is certainly cool, but it's taken.

Oh jeez, master is a sex offender? That makes things all the more interesting!

I think you're just too modest to admit that you're both of these, master!

I am momentarily distracted by trying to recall the last time I was accused of being modest...

Do you know who this guy is?

It's fine to identify him. You shouldn't post his home address or medical records though.

Yes, I saw him in one of the photos from the riot. I'm not a fan of people shoving their camera phones at people much less posting their images on the internet asking for people to find out where they live and work.

It's pretty clear that posting home addresses of people is not okay, and that taking public photos is. I don't know what you find so confusing about normal journalistic standards.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence seems to be a supporter...

I actually dont have a problem with vigilantism, well, if the guilty are brought to justice I dont much care who delivers them. But I'm not a fan of modern technology being used to attack privacy and expose protesters' identities. Its terrorism... It reminds me of these 'pro-lifers' who publish personal information about abortion providers. They are trying to intimidate people into silence...

Anonymous speech is important... Much of the pre-Revolution literature was related that way and apparently so were parts of the New Testament, criticism of authority often is. I'd like to see how the ACLU responds to both the trouble in Virginia and the hunt for Nazis. What do you think of exposing the protesters? Maybe next time they'll just wear something to cover their heads.

Jennifer Lawrence is a highly paid movie star. What she is not is some person with a serious thought to share. She should keep her ideas to herself; else she will end up like a better looking tweeting Trump.
Moreover, it didn't take her much time to turn into a media attention grabber.

Warned for inappropriate behaviour.
I think it's time to leak some more naked and embarassing pictures of Mrs Lawrence and plaster them all over, so she can appreciate a world when Internet dish out whatever brand of justice it likes.

I don't believe that was done in the name of justice though.

I'm pretty sure someone can find it a great injustice that someone as smoking hot as Lawrence is not shared among others.
That's the fun when you start to support random people with no accountability decide what is just and act on it. Mob rule is good until you start to face it.
