Don't know what the equation is measuring, but the picture is of a guy known as Alfred Lotka, who was one of the forefathers of "theoretical ecology". He measured lots of things that would seem to do cool stuff in IOT, like "...influence of environment and pollution, the heterogeneity of individuals or classes of shares inherited ages, diffusion or migration intake by a small number of individuals..."
