What will Iraq look like in 10 years? Is there anything the US can do to change your predicted outcome (for better or worse)?

Three seperate countries at peace. The civil war will be over in ten years.

when we leave either 2, 4, or 9 years from now there will be civil war. how long it will last, i don't know. there's also no way of preventing a civil war from happening at this point.

(i voted islamic theocracry only because i didn't see the other option)

President Bush IV will send a task force (operation Iraqi liberation part 9) to rescue the Iraqi people from a rather pointy rock. Baghdad crater is liberated after 3 weeks of hard fighting against the Irocky resistant fighters. Thousands of American soldiers are wounded from falling on the pointy rock and a rock detention center is set up to help contain the Irocky resistance problem. All 32 remaining citizens of Baghdad greet the army in a lack luster manner and thus are also detained. Iraq finally becomes a democracy.

It will be renamed 'The united states of Dirka-Dirkastan.'

Very accurate!

You are obviously have the power of time-travel!

:)

That will be post-2012, when Mesoamerican calendar states the world will end. The calendar has been right about everything else ;)

Bright day
Is that really possible? If US allow independent Kurdistan we will prolly see the biggest US-Turkey falling out ever. AFAIK There are Shia enclaves in Sunni territories, what about these? And more issues...

Czechoslovakia broke up peacefully, still the break-up created many problems of its own and took actually 10+ years to finish (and there are occasionally still some disputes).

Maybe British did not draw borders that well, but I highly doubt simple border "readjustment" can prove to be a "miracle cure".

BTW: voted secular dictatorship.

I'd plump for a corrupt, chaotic theocratic democracy.

The only people in Iraq who really want Iraq to remain one country are the Sunnis, because otherwise their Sunni state will be deprived of oil revenues. Thats not enough to keep a country together. As far as Turkey is concerned, thats way overblown. Theyd just have to learn to live with the fact of an independent Iraqi Kurdistan. If we played our cards right, Kurdistan could be another very important ally of ours in the region, along with Israel.

I'm going for one theoretical nation which is torn to pieces politically and still with terrorists, guerillas, and insurgents.

Isn't that 2012 thing merely biblical mumbo-jumbo?

.

No idea about ten years from now...too far out to say. For all I know, Turkey will do like that Simpsons episode and suddenly be "Ottoman Empire II - More Otto than Ever, Man!" and start invading Iraq with a picture of a propagandized Ataturk.

I know it makes no sense, but it sounds just as likely.

Sounds kind of cool!

Our troops could go back to wearing pith hats and 1800s type uniforms too!

:D

Enemy of my ally is my ally too? Kurdistan would aggrieve Iran too.

I think Iraq Christians want to Iraq to remain united too?

But really I am too uninformed about the state of Iraqi state ;) to be debating separating Sunnis and Shias (Kurdi has pretty much already taken over in their part). Of course if you could lay before us you plan that would be great. And do all 100% of Shia support independency?

It'll be a federalised democracy with religious overtones, partly to blame for secularist repression, and will have a minor problem of terrorism with Sunni populations for a few generations

Sunnis in the Anbar province will become the Northern Ireland of Iraq for the foreseeable future, but it still doesn't = failure.

Alot of Shias you forget don't want to leave Iraq anyway. Both Shia and Sunnis belong to the same tribes, and Arabs hate Persians.

A pile of rubble the way things are going now...

I don't know, I'm sure there will be some "legal" government in place, but for a part of the world that's been at War since God knows when...I don't see it ending any time soon.

Of course! Hey! You could go back to wearing Redcoats then kicking the picture of Ataturk out so you can have those mandates again!

Probably a very peaceful place.

Of course it will also be very flat and glow in the dark :nuke:
