Iron and Blood - Game Thread

So what upset the balance of power? Swaziland has long stated their main goal was Africa for the Africans, and that meant that even I am not allowed. The only reason I sent money to Guinea was so I could sell it to them, because we figured you would try to take it to attack him. It is also why they have no intention of invading Ethiopia, nor Libya had they not joined the UNA right away. I could care less about the Americas anymore, after the Canadian fiasco. The only reason I control most of the former British Empire is the same reason you invaded Hawaii. They left you when you needed them most.

So instead of wasting your resources on a war, why don't you wait a couple turns and see what our true intentions actually are? I have no idea what Swaziland could possibly want to do with South America, but it probably has to do with their Economic Victory. You would be surprised how much they plan to give up after it is over. I can give you my word as a Frenchmen, rescind your declaration and just see what we plan on doing. Trust me, as Australia and Texas have already received an offer from Swaziland to purchase the territories. Prospo and I think Arya can vouch that Swaziland was planning on giving them a couple territories in Africa one he had achieved his one goal.

Care if I test that?

Swaziland, I offer you all my income on this turn for the purchase of Brazil.

Like I said, he wanted an EP victory first. But now he might just accept and say whatever.

Kiwitt will confirm this.
GM: I will list all nations who I know who are part of this agreement at the end of Initial DoW period.

Any particular reason our allies in the ATK are betraying us?

Your country, along with Swaziland have become overgrown, overlarge, overblown, IC-hoarding, country squashing, hulking, blue monstrosities that pose a threat to all nations around the globe. No one, and I mean no one, is at all close to you in terms of raw IC power, Swaziland and you both. This is our chance to even out the world in terms of IC power, and give everyone an equal shot at victory with close enough IC counts. You know what? Let me tell you a story, that I hope will put this into perspective, a story about a man named Napoleon.

Napoleon took the reigns of France and took it for a ride in Europe, doing whatever he pleased to make sure France was on top. And sure, for a while Napoleon had a fine taste of being on top of the world, conquering nations and subduing others at his own will, but, then he decided to mess with Spain. It was troublesome at first, nothing that was empire breaking though. Oh, but then, then he had to deal with the pesky Russians. They defied him, and so he marched in triumphantly, and lost. He army was decimated due to lack of water and food, combined with disease that happened to enjoy following armies at the time. It was then that the final Coalition was formed. Nations all across Europe stood up in defiance of Napoleon, and banded together in order to restore the balance of power. And you know what? They won. They won and restored the balance of power to Europe, and all was well. And France was whittled all the way down to the pre-war borders of just France, all that needless conquering of other sovereign states was for nothing, the only thing accomplished was upsetting the entire world with the absurd amount of power they managed to get a hold of.

And that's your future France. You just couldn't keep what you already han, no siree, you had to go out and conquer every nation around you. Same with you Swaziland. And because of it, you will be reduced to a basic OPM. I hope you enjoyed it while it lasted.

Xi'an, you disgust me. Rather than discuss your grievences with your allies, you choose to stab them in the back.

I highly doubt France (or the Swazi's) was willing to give up a majority of its provinces in order to even out its IC.

Long Live Canada - Vive le Canada

International Affairs Briefing

Our Government has decided we are required to make our position known on this recent Declaration of War.

  1. We hope a diplomatic solution can be reached before hostilities begin (as per the options announced in the joint DoW)
  2. Should this not be reached we ask all nations to abide by Bogata Convention, when in battle. If you have not signed now is an opportunity to do so
  3. We ask all nations to respect Canada's Neutrality and those of its protectorates, namely Switzerland and the Gold Coast Jewish Homeland
  4. We will not provide any military aid to any combative nations on either side.
  5. We will suspend the operation of the Canadian League, until hostilities are over and review the position of it and its relevance post war.
  6. Our neutral position is enshrined in law until 1918, and as such can not change our neutral position.

As mentioned our domestic affairs are now our own business and we wish them to remain so, so any future expenditure details will not be forthcoming, however rest assured we will abide by the statements made above and hope all other nations do as well.

WAR! WAR! From the sunny plazas of Trieste to the wintry streets of Stockholm, all of Germany gather at newsstands to read all about it. It was the morning of February 3, 1906. For a while there was some confusion. We declared war! No, it was France who violated the peace treaty first! No, it was Swaziland in collusion with the Russian monarchists! The Kaiser has managed to persuade the Three Kingdoms to help him regain his throne. No, Xi'an is on our side. Or is there a three-way conflict, between the Three Kingdoms and the UNA and the Accord? No, there's no war on, it's just exaggerated reports of border clashes with Polish rebels.

Citizens gather to hear the formal declaration of war in Berlin

The next day, events were clarified. Germany, in a coalition of states styling themselves "The Conference of Nations", has declared war on France and Swaziland. The Xi'an foreign minister, speaking to shocked French and Swazi diplomats stranded in that capital, made it clear that this war is about cutting the French and Swazi empires down to size. The dominance of the two most powerful nations of the world has been virtually unchallenged for many decades, but no more shall they be able to impose their will on weaker, unprotected nations with impunity, as in South America and Russia.

It sounds hypocritical, coming from a minister of a government that ruled a vast empire which had in the past indulged in imperialist wars of conquest of its own. But many smaller states also shared these views, and they rallied behind the cause. One is easily reminded of the campaigns against Napoleon at the start of the 19th century, when large and small states alike joined forces to contain his imperial ambitions. Now, a hundred years later in a greatly changed world, a second struggle is about to commence.

Allied Xi'an troops march in Beijing before departing for the front

Honouring her alliance with the UNA, Germany formally declared war on France and Swaziland at noon on February 3. Reactions were mixed. The German military has been contemplating a second war with the Accord ever since the border war with France, and most Germans consider France to be Germany's top foreign enemy. However, the sudden outbreak of war took everyone by surprise. A few welcomed the war, viewing it as an opportunity to bring about world revolution (communists), secure Germany against Accordian encirclement (nationalists) or build a greater German empire (ultranationalists). Some, on both the left and right, consider the government's declaration of war a betrayal of the people and a mockery of German democracy. Most, however, are ambivalent.

Pro-Soviet demonstrations in support of the war

It made a mess of the country's existing political alliances; both the Popular Front and the National Front fractured due to different parties' stances to the war. On February 5, Chancellor August Bebel (who himself was informed of the Reichswehr's and UNA's war plans only in January) cobbled together a "National Unity" coalition government comprising parties that support the war from both the left and the right. The largest party in the coalition (though not dominantly so) is the Communist Party of Germany, which also became the country's largest political party after the Bebel's Social Democrats split into two separate parties, one pro-war and one anti-war. The National Unity government immediately made overtures to the International Brigade, some of whose members are still fighting the Accord invasion force in Russia.

Many are calling this latest conflict "der Krieg zur Beendigung aller Kriege", "the war to end all wars". Whatever the ultimate outcome, the first shots are already being fired on the Franco-German border...

GM: Announcement

My timing could not be worse, just as it is heating up, I will find it difficult to do an update this time. I am attending a 2-day conference this weekend.

You stupid hypocrite, you're one to talk after conquering India when California "faked" the whole espionage mission that started it.

I have been very pro-African all game as well. Always insisting that Africa be ruled by African nations and that Africans ultimately have full control over all of the continent. It always surprises me when people are like “but you have a whole continent!?!?!” as if that isn’t what I have been working towards all game.

Not my problem that I am the last remaining African nation that has been here from the beginning. :D

It is also why people don’t believe me when I say that I respect Ethiopia’s neutrality. They are African and have a say in the continent as well!

This should explain it.

This is disturbing on so many levels I don’t even know where to begin, but I will say that for all of this talk about how bad imperialism is, the ones squawking the loudest have now shown their true colors.

The biggest disappointment is from our ATK “friends”, who would rather stab a good friend in the back instead of work with them to their own betterment. They didn’t even have the gall to leave the Accord alliance before committing this heinous act. Perhaps they will come to their senses and not confirm the declaration.

Need I remind the ATK that the whole reason I have my South American holdings is because I entered a war IN SUPPORT OF THEM? You know, as their trusted allies? I eliminated a threat to their war with Boj China from a nation that had shown it had a long geographic reach and an adept use of armies and navies to secure territory. Just go back and look at Tawantinsuyo’s actions during the pre-Canadian war. History shows that he had a long reach and wasn’t afraid to use it. I intervened to protect your backs from this threat. Sure, I got some territory out of it, but the bigger picture is that you were able to clean up Asia and make it yours without foreign intervention. And this is how you re-pay me?

Let me take a moment to explain my actions in this game. Sure I have been expansionistic. But as Gamez has already pointed out, this is because I was going for an IC victory – which necessarily meant I needed land. I was close to this as well, but now I obviously have to dial back. I have had plans to divest most of my non-African holdings once I got the IC victory. That is not imperialist. That is not evil.

Let me also note that ALL of my non-African holdings came as a direct result of me protecting and defending my allies. I have already explained my South American holdings, but my Russian holdings are exactly the same. Imperial Russia joined the Accord, so of course I am going to defend them from attack. When the USSR was formed and began taking Russian land, I was bound by my alliance to defend Russia. Unfortunately Kan didn’t let on to exactly what he was planning, or else I might have held off. When Russia dissolved mid turn and post DOW phase (something I have issue with, actually) we were pretty much already on the hook.

So there is your imperialism. A strong and unwavering support for my allies. If that is the definition of imperialism now, then I will welcome it with open arms and embrace the title. But we all know it is not. It truly saddens me that the same allies that I fought for are now turning on me in such a cowardly and devious way.

And now for the UNA. Sure we have had a cold war type of relationship for a while now, but when have I ever actually threatened you? I have always sought for peace. Look back to when the NAP was over. I was one of the only ones openly advocating for an extension of the agreement. Look at my offer to buy your West African holdings instead of going ballistic, even though I had already voiced my supreme dislike of your colonial expansion into Africa. Look at the following espionage attempts against me, many of which are active and harmful acts of war:

kiwitt said:
You have discovered Librulstan agents in Sudan and unknown agents in Chad and Californian agents in your naval design offices. Also the 3 polish cities you held have now revolted, by unknown agents.

kiwitt said:
GM: You have discovered Librulstan agents testing your espionage strength.

kiwitt said:
GM: You have discovered espionage activity in Maghreb, but were unable to identify the nation involved.
kiwitt said:
GM: Here are your mission results:

Maghreb Rebels - Comintern Alliance was behind them

kiwitt said:
GM: You have successfully stopped two missions in your territory, to test your espionage strength and find your secret orders, by California.

kiwitt said:
GM: Your agents have managed to find evidence of Siamese agents in your capital, however, their mission to cause unrest (lower stability) successfully averted.

kiwitt said:
GM: Mission to Siam did not find evidence of Siamese involvement in destabilising your nation

Did I declare on you then when I had the strength and justification? No. Why? Because I don’t have any benefit to a war with the UNA. I am an African nation that is intent on a united Africa controlled by Africans (either via alliance or individually if I have to). My international holdings are to fill a specific purpose (IC victory) and once that is obtained, they are to be divested.

Are these the acts of someone who is hell bent on taking over the world? I think not.

So to that end, what I am I prepared to do about it? First off, I accept Peru’s offer to buy Brazil from me for 81 IC. I will also extend a private offer to him on how to regain his former South American territories.

Additionally, I will divest my holdings in Europe to a third party. They are nothing to me at this point other than a headache and cause for strife.

This leaves me with my African holdings, which I will never abandon. My offer still stands, however, to the colonialists in West Africa. I will peacefully buy your holdings from you, and help you return some of your large investment in the territories.

So what say you members of the UNA and ATK? Will you accept these concessions, or are you hell bent on becoming what you allegedly despise?

Orders updated

I never really considered it before but the only territory I currently control that did not come in defense or support of an ally is the Benelux. How's that for Imperialism?

Italy? Roman War, I came to Bosnia's aid. Spain? I came to Britain's aid. Guinea? I gave that away. Portugal, the British Isles, and Iceland/Greenland? Britain left our alliance when we needed them, so they got the same treatment Hawaii got. Russian holdings? Coming to the defense of the Russian Empire.

Kan, if you sign peace you can have Idel-Ural and Siberia.

Resolution of Recife

The nations of Swaziland and Tawantinsuyo have come to agreement over the disposition of the nations’ South American holdings and diplomatic relationship.

The following articles are included in the Resolution:

- Effective immediately, The Kingdom of Swaziland will sell the territory of Brazil to Tawantinsuyo for the sum of 81 IC
- The territories of La Plata and Paraguay will also be sold to Tawantinsuyo for the sum of 100IC each. This will be conducted over the next two updates to allow time for Tawantinsuyo to gain the appropriate amount of cash
- Upon completion of the sale of all three territories to Tawantinsuyo, Swaziland will release Tawantinsuyo from its vassalage status.
- The Kingdom of Swaziland and Tawantinsuyo sign a permanent Non-Aggression pact and pledge to be allies.

Signed, King Mswati, Kingdom of Swaziland
Signed, Juan Carranza, President of New Tawantinsuyo

Redistribution of Territories in the World.

Juan Carranza would like to make an offer to the world, one attempt at peace. There has been concerns of an unbalance of power, and he seeks to finish. While the map shows his thoughts on this, the exact details are for the nations to discuss individually. It is unfair for a nation to just give up a piece of land, and because of that we would like every nation to work out a price for each.

Spoiler :

California agrees with your division if Libya gets Maghreb, Sahel, Nigeria and Cameroon, and Ethiopia gets Chad and the Sudan. Surely Swaziland wouldn't mind this,as it keeps those parts of Africa within African hands.
