The term "Mitteleuropa" (Central Europe) was coined by the Germans in the 19th century and was supposed to denote Germany as well as areas over which the German Empire wanted to extend its sphere of influence (including Congress Poland, Ukraine, Baltic states and other areas which Germany wanted to use as a buffer zone separating it from Russia), as well as territories into which it planned to expand. 19th century Germans used this concept to portray themselves in opposition to both "the West" (France, Britain, etc.) and "the East" (Russia). Later during the 20th century the concept played an important role in German plans of expansion during WW1. But does Central Europe exist, if so then what characterizes it, where is it located, and is modern Germany still Central European?
