Kwanzaa. Just heard of it a year ago. Found it created the dashiki, kufi, and the boubou. Not that I'd heard of the latter two and cared about the former. So, is it a holiday?

Uhh, yeah! It's celebrated by people with traditions and stuff. Good enough for me.

David Alan Grier doesn't think so :p

if you dont think its a holiday your probably rasist

Yeah, it was made up by a professor, but people still follow it.

In a technical sense, yes, but it has no more of a connection to African culture than Panda Express does to Chinese culinary tradition.

Kwanza (one 'a') is actually the currency of Angola.

As much as any cultural holiday, including a December 25th Christmas.

Are you some sort of rasist? Of course its a holiday for black people. Hell its more of a holiday than Valentine's day I'll tell you that much.

What is it?
Pan-African holiday developed by a dude who led a rival organization to the Black Panthers, Ron Karenga. Basically, an attempt to create an artificial event based on an artificial perception of reality. It'd be like attempting to institute a pan-European holiday, with all of the food French, all of the language a mishmash of Germanic and Slavic tongues, and celebrated solely by emigrants...

Kwanzaa is the lazy black-mans holiday. Seriously..... if you want to celebrate your heritage, do it a traditional way, not some way some dude made up in the 1960's.

As far as I know, there is absolutely no REAL reason to celebrate Kwanzaa aside from just to celebrate heritage, and if you were TRULY into that kind of thing, you shouldn't need some idiot holiday to care enough to do it.

What is it?
It's a celebration made up by a black socialist named Ron Karenga that believed Christianity was the "white man's" religion and wanted an "African" holiday (that incorporated some of his African socialist ideology) for descendants of Africans in the U.S.

Ron Karenga, however, should also be noted for being imprisoned for beating women with electrical cable, putting detergent, forcing running hoses down their throats and trying to rape them.

Edit: Wow, 2 posts about my post before I made mine :D
@Dachs:

Strangely enough, I understand perfectly what you mean there. :) I can easily see such a thing appearing and happening.
