This place seems to be a kind of Atheist Sanctuary. How come there are so many atheists here? Religious people are a majority in the world (except in a few countries). Are "Civilization"-players more atheistic than the norm, or are they more likely to discuss on an Off-Topic forum? Or has religious persons tired of the many atheist provokations and left this place? Or just coincidence?

People who like to sit and think about strategies in a strategy game are more likely to stay at a strategy game website.
People who like to sit and think about strategies are probably more likely to sit and think about God.
People who think a lot are less likely to be governed by emotions.

People who think about God and are unlikely to be governed by emotions are atheists.

Well, most European countries have an atheist majority, or at least a substantial portion of their population being atheist, so in regards to European posters their atheism isn't surprising.

I think Atheists just tend to be more vocal about it. Yes, there are a lot of them, but there are still a fair proportion of Theists. Enough to prevent this forum from being labelled an 'Atheist Sanctuary'.

On the internet overall, there is a powerful non-religious presence because the internet is the only place in the world where they can revel in knowledge and anonymity. Knowledge and truth are important to everyone, but more to atheists than anyone else I meet (all the freethinkers I know hold knowledge as the most important thing in the world--usually not so with religious people). Anonymity is important because in some areas of real life, there is a very real possibility of being attacked with more than words.

What Brighteye posted probably has a lot to do with CFCOT in particular.

A lot of people on this forum are young, well educated (or in the proces of being so). That's a demographic which has a lot of atheists. Well, at least in Europe but probably also in the US.

Too bad they didn't make a cross section of how religious people for every age category for every country. Either way, the part about religion is pretty interesting.

In a nutshell: the grand majority of religious people here are old. They don't play games. The younger gaming generation is far more atheistic.

The first day of the freethinkers club at my high school, started this year, we decided we needed a bigger room--about 50 people out of a school of just under 2000.
And the two Christian clubs at our school combined barely have 70 members.

This forum generally attracts young middle to high income urban middle class males, which is a group of people the least likely to believe in supernatural powers and all the spiritual crap with which other people usually poison their mind.

For me, it's surprising how many believers there are - Czech forums are usually like 95% atheist.

Along with the Estonians you're like, the most atheistic people in the world though.

Well, I have a fellow Biology student, that after a completed Master in Biology still believes in Biblical Creationism. It feels kind of weird and incredibly arrogant that she thinks she is so much smarter than all the teachers and scientists at the university, and that all the biology books basically is just nonsense since all modern biology has evolution as the basis of pretty much everything...

Well, as I always say, the number of real atheists in the Czech Rep. is lower, as many people are spiritual, but they remain unaffiliated with any of the registered churches. Czechs instinctively don't trust organized religion.

I laughed when poll results were published some time ago showing that only about 7% of people who received college education believed in God. Since the forums I attend are usually full of college students, it's not really surprising there are practically no believers.
