Order of the Blessed Cross
The Order of the Blessed Cross, founded by Saint M'Sartto of the Cross, is dedicated to Justice, Martyrdom, and Defense of the Weak. It is a militant order, taking additional vows to bear the cross in defense of the weak, in the upholding of justice, and in the search for a martyr's death. However, this does not replace the traditional vows of poverty, charity, obedience, and service to the poor. There is a final eighth vow of chastity (known as the "Monastic Vow") which, like the others, is punishable under death but which unlike the others may be rescinded by an abbot. In order to be rescinded the member must be incapable of regular duty in the field of battle and in search of a wife with whom to have children. Even though these members may have been released of the Monastic Vow, they must still live in the monastery (in a seperate section with their family, should they marry) and they must continue to uphold their other vows and duties.
Members of the Order are known as Brothers of the Blessed Cross, or more simply as Brothers of the Cross, or in context as simply Brothers. They are titled as "Brother ____ of the Blessed Cross" and are addressed as "Brother ____." One of the most obvious signs to distinguish Brothers from members of other monastic orders is the sword they always carry at their side, which is shaped as a Trinitarian Cross* (which gives greater meaning to the phrase "to bear the cross"). The choice to shape their swords as crosses is three-fold: 1) as a reminder of the Blessed Trinity, 2) as a reminder of the duty to die a martyr, as belief holds that the martyrdom of near all saints is accompanied in some way by a cross, and 3) as a reminder to spread the Gospel, for the Great Prophet Membertou commanded the apostles to carry the sign of the Blessed Cross always.
Unlike most other orders, they answer to the Great King, the Hand of the Trinity on Earth for their duty is enact the physical message of Membertou, not the spiritual or worded one (most orders answer to the Great Priest, the Word of the Trinity on Earth). The Council of Generals, which advises the Great King on military endeavors, takes its most prominent members from the abbots of the Order. Many of the Dawn Lands' soldiers are trained in Blessed Cross monasteries, which often function as barracks. The connection between the Order of the Blessed Cross and the regular military is so strong that commanders must take the Order's three additional vows, those that require bearing of the cross for the weak, upholding of justice, and a martyr's death. As such, commanders in the Wabanaki military are known as Lay Brothers of the Blessed Cross.
As a military unit, the Brothers of the Blessed Cross are trained to be highly disciplined and incredibly zealous. There are also meant to be very adept at "untraditional tactics," public relations, local recruiting, and leadership (particularly of untrained rebels/levies). They form an elite and loyal brotherhood of militant monks in search of martyrdom. In addition to their military duties, Brothers of the Blessed Cross are always in search of opportunities to evangelize. They are truly the most dedicated and self sacrificing servants of the Mother.
