Japan - Hojo Tokimune Thread

So this guy they chose to model after a modern pretty boy interpretation but for the Chinese and American leaders they went full toad?

They go with whatever is the most common and fitting depiction of a ruler.
Tokimune died at a very young age so depicting him as a handsome young man makes sense just like in that Japanese series.
Qin Shi Huang looks like a bearded toad on most Chinese depictions of him so they went with that style.

Also it seems they're going with unusual leader choices for civs this time. So it's quite likely we won't be seeing Alex around this time and the game needs at least one pretty boy.

Now that I'm familiar with his life, I'd say a good choice. Japan would probably be one of my first picks. Hopefully Louis XIV for France, Victoria for Britain and Burma/Bagan is in the game and I'll be over the moon.

That's incredibly inconsistent, as someone pointed out historical depictions of Hojo showed a bald pudgy man, young though he might've been. And there have been multiple series and movies depicting Qin Shi Huang as young and handsome.

And Teddy while robust was never depicted as a fat beach ball with jowls full of bees like he's shown here.

Legitimately laughed out loud in my office at that Teddy comment :D

A quick overview of his historical achievements:
- refused to become a vassal of the Mongol empire
- fought off 2 Mongol invasions

Man a Hojo UU Kamikaze unit would be so much cooler than those fighters from past games.

I'm not sure Civ would benefit from summoning a typhoon.

I don't know that much about Japan's history, but it's nice that they're showing off some of it here. I'm thinking Japan will definitely have defensive and cultural bonuses, but I'm trying to think of how to make a defensive/turtling civ be geared towards a victory condition.

Ideally, this Japan should play like Korea, except with incredible culture as opposed to incredible technology. They should have a strong religion, but shouldn't need any incentives to spread it to the rest of the world. I suppose the best way to play it would be to give culture bonuses early game, defensive bonuses for military units, and have that transfer to appeal or tourism bonuses late game, for a culture victory. Maybe add in a religious bonus in there too, maybe give stronger religious bonuses for cities that follow the capital's religion, and more ways to control what religion your own cities practice.

This is how I'd probably start looking at this anyway, no clue what Ed will do. I look forward to learning about what he's come up with!

Not sure what a Divine Wind ability would look like. Embarked units lose 5 health in your territory?

Anyone want to guess on the Japanese Infrastructure? I'm going with either a Zen Garden or a Dojo.

I will say that after seeing paintings of Tokimune presenting him as a chubby guy I'm a bit annoyed they went for the "clearly not real" drama depiction of him. Real heroes don't need to be handsome. :|

Dojos are fairly well recognized but we might see Zen stone gardens too. Either would be fitting for Tokimune.

Typhoon. Leader UU. May be purchased with 200 faith. Takes up four adjacent hexes, at least three of them must be sea hexes, within five tiles of your capital. Each turn, it will lose 10 health, but is otherwise indestructable. Can move one tile per turn. Deals 50 damage to any ship in its radius, pillages any improvements in its radius. May not be passed through, and units may only move one tile if inside it. Can only be purchased in the medieval era.

I love this choice mostly because it's one of only a handful of leaders ever introduced to this series that I actually had to google who they were.

I honestly thought that they'd bring back Tokugawa, but I'm pleasantly surprised.

I personally dig the Imperial Japan era (especially Imperial Japanese Navy)but I'm totally okay with this leader, hope Japan still has some bushido in the UA.
