JFC-3: Ping Pong

@mushyman - I forted the Gold before we had Iron Working. Quotey started the Work Boat to explore Japan, but we couldn't get open borders. The Monastery you started on turn 4 won't help stability, since it's in the capital. Inflation has nothing to do with the slider. It's going to top 200% and there's nothing we can do about it.

170 790

* Turn research to 100% and proceed with Feudalism. Spend the turnset gleefully spending the :gold: that mushyman saved up.
* -17 (3, -8, -31, 10, 1)

171 800

* Asoka asks us to stop trading with Japan. He is Toku's worst enemy (+1 peace, -8 religion) and Toku is his and Surya's worst enemy (-8 religion from Asoka, -12 from Surya :lol:). From Toku we have +1 peace, +1 resources, +2 trade, a Fish gift, and a Silk for 1 GPT. From Asoka we have +1 peace, +1 resources, +2 OB, and Ivory for Silk + Clam. On the previous turn, Toku was not in war prep. Seeking a harmonious resolution, I refuse Asoka's request, but then cancel the resource deals to Japan voluntarily, so that Asoka and Surya don't have to ask again.
* I turn our Galley around from Indonesia so that it can transport the Spy and then stay in the middle east to maintain contacts.
* India is down to unstable/collapsing for some reason. Barbs, maybe. We're at -16 (3, -8, -30, 10, 1)

172 810

* I'd like to sell Monotheism to Toku for 40, but I think it might offend Asoka and Surya. Asoka has researched Theology, which is pretty useless since he stays in OR and the AP was built for Christianity in 720 AD. We can't see where it was built. For some reason Byzantion is listed by name on the top 5 list, but it's independent and Athens is not on the list, so I think Greece must have collapsed. I also see Rome ("Unknown", size 10, 750 BC, Hagia Sofia.)
* Trade Pig for Cow to Asoka. Cancel Silk+Clam for Ivory and replace it with Horse for Ivory+3. I don't think we need our Horses. On the other hand he's still Unstable/Collapsing and I don't think we want him to collapse, so maybe I should have left the deal alone. :)
* -18 (2, -8, -31, 10, 1)

173 820

* Notre Dame built in Unknown (Rome).
* Arabia captures Gwandar, the barb city 2S of the Persian start. That's annoying, because now our Galley won't be able to get through to reestablish and maintain contact with Ethiopia.
* Beijing Monastery -> Barracks, to nudge our power rating and because it can be built in 3 turns while growing to the next size.
* Macau grows to size 14 and Confucian Monastery -> Courthouse.
* I notice that Surya is willing to sign OB and do it.
* -17 (3, -8, -31, 10, 1)

174 830

* England spawns.
* The Galley is on the east coast of India, but I realize that the Scout can get across India faster on its own, and despite the risk I guess that's worth it, especially since the Galley won't be able to get through Arabian Persia. I also realize that we could load a Scout on the Galley and pop the huts in Indonesia and Australia, so I send it back east.
* We didn't get any trade routes to the Khmer.
* Stability unchanged.

175 840

* Beijing grows to size 10.
* Foreign stability down 2, overall down 1. -18 (3, -8, -30, 10, -1). Could be the exports to Japan that I canceled. Surya has 0 GPT to spare, but I give him Fish in the hope of recovering some Foreign stability. I don't know if you get any benefit from gifts, though.

176 850

* Germany spawns.
* Toku asks us to cancel deals with Asoka and I refuse.
* Beijing Barracks -> Settler.
* I check the trades and realize I've missed the chance to trade Calendar to Surya for Archery. It's now worth only 10 wealth to him. Well, dang. I sell it for 10.
* -16 (3, -8, -30, 10, -1)

177 860

* Mandalay grows to size 5. Or maybe that was last turn.
* I find out why India is unstable.
jfc3-4-2.jpg

* Meanwhile, somewhere "A massive barbarian uprising is occurring. The Vandals strike out against civilization, seeking to claim its prizes with their swords." All I can say to that is :lol:
* I beg Asoka for 50 wealth, and he agrees. I'd like to ask for Archery, but I don't think he'd do it.
* -17 (3, -8, -31, 10, -1)

178 870

* Ruissia spawns.
* Hangzhou grows to size 10.
* Hangcheng grows to size 10 and Granary -> Worker.
* Japan is up to Stable. We're at -18 (3, -8, -32, 10, -1)

179 880

* Temple of K BIDA. And yet, the Middle Kingdom is in the house.
jfc3-4-3.jpg

* I've been checking on the trade of Currency to Surya for Archery. If he's researching Currency, we might as well get in on the tail end of it. But he has lost contact with Japan and now considers Archery a major state secret.
jfc3-4-4.jpg

Toku has also lost contact with Asoka. This could be an opportunity to trade with Japan behind their backs (like by selling Monotheism), but I don't think it works that way. I think we would get the diplo hit after contact was reestablished. Not sure.
* The Galley is almost to Macau, so I put a Scout (1 turn) in front of the Courthouse so that it will be ready just in time.
* I also start moving the extra Axeman in Macau to Beijing to escort the Settler. I should have started moving him earlier.
* Stability unchanged.

180 890

* I find that Gwadar has been retaken from Arabia by barbs, so our Galley could have gotten through after all. Still, I think popping the huts is a very good use of our Galley.
* First contact with a typically grumpy Saladin. He doesn't know anyone we know. We have -3 worst enemies, maybe from Hammurabi or someone. Speaking of whom, Saladin has Sur, but not Babylon. There's not much we can do with him except give him Aesthetics or Calendar, which I do not do. He does have 1 GPT available, but we don't have a trade connection, so for now we can't sell him any resource.
* -19 (3, -8, -33, 10, -1)
* Inflation is at 38% (19 GPT).

A few suggestions:
* Settle a city to get Wheat+Pig+Corn. I posted suggestions earlier.
* Courthouses
* Spread Hinduism to a second city so that Macau is free to build military
* I wonder if we might want to try putting a unit up for hire. I don't know the mechanics, but ours are cheap to build and start level 3. India has cash and conceivably might want to hire a Spearman.

I've had barbs sit around in Mongolia and thought nothing about them because of my Great Wall. But I forgot the Great Wall doesn't prevent them from becoming truly Mongolian and biting me in the ass 100 years later when they declare war on me totally unprepared.:lol:

Reading back, it doesn't look to me like we're settled on any particular spot(s) for that region. And as always, you are the dictator of your turn set. Myself, with our current setup I'm partial to on top of the Iron for the GLH bonus and for the tile defense bonus, even though it has less production than 1S of the Corn.

The corn pops east of the pigs? Maybe go for coastal/river city to get the trade routes from Glight (as well as extra health from riverside and lighthouse). I guess we're heading slowly towards the Mongol spawn. Longbows would help, so also might building some walls.

Trade Pig for Cow to Asoka. Cancel Silk+Clam for Ivory and replace it with Horse for Ivory+3.

I suggest that instead of longbows, you build your elephants soon. Or do you still not have horseback riding? :crazyeye:

Why on earth would we research Horseback Riding? It gives us one useful unit for one specific event which can be dealt with in other ways, while costing a big chunk of research time :p

Well, the strongest unit you have is a longbow which sucks against keshiks, and you are nowhere close to getting chu-ko-nus (lack of machinery). I.e. if Mongolia does decide to declare you're going to be in trouble. At least with elephants you have a chance. Horseback riding can't be that expensive any more now since so many civs have spawned?
Or are you planning to do a sneak attack after the Mongolians have moved their troops out of their capital and mass attacking with chariots? :lol:

Well let's take a look.......... hmm, ok it is pretty cheap actually :lol:
4 turns at 100% research (920 beakers). Worth thinking about guys? Means we can forget about Archery for a bit as well. Of course we'd be stuffed if India collapsed.
I don't think mass attacking with anything is a great idea, would be hella expensive on troop maintenance :D

Um, for the next city I'm undecided - were we going for two in that area, or was it two including Seoul? If another is going up there then on the iron for definite - and probably regardless. It is a bit close to Seoul though.

CG2 LBs are fine against Keshiks in cities, and Genghis doesn't seem to pillage much, but if did get pillagers we could team up our cheap Spearmen. Keshiks have sucked since Rhye took away their +50% vs. melee bonus.

"were we going for two in that area, or was it two including Seoul?"
There was nothing like a group plan, just a couple remarks that got made.

We're going to be using longbows. India collapses.

BTW, did we agree on Jakarta? I think we should just settle that and plonk down the corn city later. There's a galley already prepped.... I'll just settle the corn city if there's no opinions, later today..

My reason for suggesting the Corn area was to make sure we got there ahead of Japan, and then to get Courthouse/Granary/Walls up by the time Mongolia showed up.

Jakarta is another thing we neither agreed nor disagreed on.

I'm going to settle 1S of the corn and build a settler for Jakarta. But something else rpessing- A GE was born. No wonders available, but if we wanted we could save him for the Taj at Constitution, or settle in some city.

Turn 0 (180)

Everything looks fine, apart from -33 in Economy. Total is -19, shaky.

Turn 2 (182)

India collapses taking our resource trades with it- awesome! Feud comes in, go for CS as I'm unsure why we'd even want Feudalism.

At the same time as India collapses a great mediator brokers peace between them and the Native civilization. Mediator must have been a terrorist.

Turn 4 (184)

GE born. Ice him for a later wonder or a GA.

Turn 12 (192)

Meet Germany. Open Borders and stop here relaising I did 12 turns.

I haven't got Archery yet- perhaps we can trade Calendar to a European for it.

Save.

Got it. Had a look.

The economy is a mess. We're unstable. Our army consists of six axe-persons. The Mongols are due to appear in 1190 iirc (18 turns?).

Looking good :goodjob:.

18 turns? ******, whip whip whip! I kne wI shouldn't have built temples!

Yeah, why would you even want feudalism when you don't even have archery to build archers, much less longbows? :lol:
