Jumpmasters 1B: Power is Knowledge (Vanilla, GOTM mod - Emperor - No research)

Excellent - all those military units were getting kind of cumbersome to keep track of! :p

Welcome aboard MB :)

I was spared from the high winds but have been busy taking down our storm shutters on my house, my rental house and my parents house. I'm just getting back into playing mode.

Looks like I missed some good discussions. On the victory condition I'm leaning towards CONQ.

It would be the Mongol way to leave none standing ;)

If we were going space we should have played it a little different. We can always finish up as CONQ and then go back and grab the save from when we took over the second continent and play for space from there.

I think I will build some longbows. We don't have an attack 4 unit, and it could be a while before we get to MT. The Carthagian units are tough to crack, particularly with their remaining towns on hills, and the muskets are very difficult to knock over.

If we are going for conquest, then taking on the more difficult opponents now may be a good thing - but we will have to prepare to do it without MT I think.

I hope you are making full use of the bombard capability of our UUs. They should be capable of taking down muskets if you get to them in numbers and pound them first before attacking.

Yes I am. It took me a couple of goes to realise you can bombard AND attack with the same unit in a given turn. That's new for me. Unfortunately the bombard strike rate is not all that great, so you really do need a lot of units to take a size 11 city gaurded by 3 vet muskets and 3 or 4 other units. Definitely doable though. The units I have lost BTW are NOT to the opponent AI. The stack of units on the barb island was dismantled by the barbs on turn 2.

The vikings have a city on that island now, which should keep them poor.

900AD: Pre-turn.
Everything seems OK. I think I'd be irrigating now ready for rails, but that's just me.
There were a lot of clowns that could be changed to tax men. It's boring I know, but in SG's it's best if you check this before you hand the game on, and then you can pretend you do it every turn ;) . We're making and additional 27gpt now.

Trade Minoans navigation and WM for WM and 580g

I wonder if you have been keeping our WM secret? Too late now anyway :D

Aah. Seems like you have. Sorry. I trade it to Russia - They pay gpt

The world and his wife builds Magellans. I didn't buy mavigation for nothin' folks...so

(1) 910AD:
Rush Magellans.
Whack Carthagian settler pair.
Kill Tokugawa - they are out of the game.
The loss of war weariness allows me to fire lots of specialist.
A stack of galleys full of units materialises off the coast of Scandinavia. I declare war on the vikings. It would be rude not to. We are at war with the Vikings
Sell the harbour in Owase so I can build a warrior there in order to quell the resistance.
Russia landed a few units with the obvious intention. I ask her to leave, she declines.
We are at war with Russia
Kill all offending Russian units.

IBT:
The Russians declare war and capture Saynshand with a knight that must have landed in the last interturn without me seeing.

(2) 920AD:
Recapture Saynshand. Will have to get some units dotted around for a while maybe.
Lose the entire stack of units on the hill on the barbarian island. 8 units? Something like that. I think I'll keep off that island for a while.
Bombarded Myrtos. It is defended by 7 hoplites. Don't know why, but it is. I'll send reinforcements before tackling the town.
The vikings have muskets. Methinks we need MT to take on the vikings. I would have thought the Arabs would have been a soft target. I sit the stack on his salt to stop him building any more. We're going to need a shed load more units though.

Killed a Kwarmizarmi caravel, but they are still in the game.

(3) 930AD:
Through bombardment I know that Nidaros (the viking capital) is defended by three muskets, a pike and an army loaded with 1 MDI.

Nidaros falls for the loss of two units. We capture Sun Tzu's and generate a leader. The Capital jumps to Uppsala.

Myrtos (Carthagian) falls for the loss of two units.

Theveste (Carthagian) falls for the loss of 1 unit. This is a strategically important Canal city.

We can now build the Pentagon.

Otherwise quiet.

IBT:
The Minoans Land a stack of 12 Knights next to strategically important Theveste. Way to go guys.
The Russians land all sorts of units all over the place. It's getting quite interesting.

940AD:
Lose two units taking out a Russian Knight. I can't wait for them to get their UU.
So what about Minoa?

Q "What do you want for Economics and Metallurgy?"
A " WM + 2540g"

Q "Will you accept WM + 569gpt?"
A "I doubt it"

Q "So you're not completely stupid then?"
A "Well I'll take WM + 569gpt + wines,dyes,silks and spices and 575g?"

Q "Will you leave our land or do you want a fight?"
A "We'll fight!"

Q "Oh so you are only very stupid then?"
A " We're not talking to you any more."

The Minoans declare war on us.

Bombard seven colours of it out of the Minoan stack. It'll be interesting to see if they attack Theveste now.

No attacks on Carthage possible due to these developments.
Begin to get viking invasion force in shape for the next player.
Again no attacks.

The Ottomans and Minoans sign an alliance against us
How about zero research AW?

(5)950AD:
Decide to take a risk and attack Hadrumetum (Carthaginian) from distance. We take it for the loss of one unit. Carthage is down to its last city.

There is a settler due in utica with a galley to pick him up. He will settle NW of Myrtos on the hill and rush a harbour for the gems.

A turghaut cav taking out a stray Russian MDI generates a leader. I hurry Smiths with it.
The next leader should hurry the Pentagon probably as this will increase the life of our current forces.

Capture Vasteras - No losses.

There are some units in Sikar that I have been transporting, but have temporarily run out of caravels. I have begun to stack the Caravels together. They are mainly empty and travelling back to the mainland.

Joan has wool if war weariness becomes more of a problem. I think though, that if you can kill Carthage in the next couple of turns we should be OK for a while.

The Russians, Minoans and Ottomans will not talk to us.

Have to rush because I need to pack a bag for another week on the road.

Good game now guys ;)

Here is the Viking front.

.. Here is >>THE GAME<<

Nice play MB

Question: When asking RUS to leave and they declare instead does that count as war happiness?

When a truck spills it's contents all over the road it has "shed it's load" and you get 5000 chickens, or 25 tons of oranges all over the road. A shed load just means lots and lots. The Mongol units are actually performing quite well, even against muskets on hills, but the kill ratio is decreasing, but we will need a shed load more. :)

If someone declares war on you you will get war happiness. I think (though I am not sure) that you need to be in a representative form of government for war happiness, since it is just negative war weariness.

Remember: get the gems hooked up and the spices in Old Carthage. Rush a few markets in cities size 8 and up.

Well played M-B

We couldn't trade maps until Navigation came into play. That happened at the end of the previous turn set. But I for one was working hard to make sure we had a comprehensive map to trade when it did come around ;)

I guess now we are hitting the other continent we are up against more advanced technology than we had with Toku, Raj and the others. My interpretation is the view I've expressed before - we need to build Ordu Archers in quantity, ready for cav upgrades. Also, as we come up against muskets and later rifles we need lots more bombardiers - hordes of Bagatur Hordes.

Oops! I guess this puts me in the driving seat. I'll download it now and try to play tomorrow evening UK time. Five turns, right?

gator said:

I believe war happiness happens whenever an enemy declares on you. What I'm a bit unclear about is whether it applies when you are in Monarchy, when War Weariness has no effect.

[EDIT] Got it :)

If it is the Ordu Archer that upgrades, then yes, let's build 30 or so. Once Smiths Completes we should be making 600+ gpt so upgrades will not be a problem.

I'm not wholly sure we should send very many more units to Scandinavia. Rather, I think we should perhaps consider building a stack for Russia. I'm not too keen on fighting Cossacks.

Also, Once the minoans stack of knights has healed it may try to attack Theveste again. Theveste does not have enough defenders ATM since I sent them to kill off Carthage. It's difficult to give advice on this actually.

Alan is but he probably got sidetracked with GOTM33 ending/scoring.

Turn log 950 AD - 1000 AD

Turn 210 950 AD - Preflight
Mapstat says we are 940 tiles from Domination. I'll keep heading in that direction.
There are 640 unclaimed tiles and our current enemies have 897 fo us to acquire, with teh Vikings and Russians at over 500.

F4 : We can only have sensible conversations with the Arabs, France and England. The Arabs seem to be remarkably ignorant of the world map, and they have lots of gpt to burn, so I taek up their offer of 16gpt + 50 gold for a world map swap.

F1: We seem to be building some markets in places that will never deliver and are not worth rushing them in. Switch them to barracks. Rushed one market, adjusted a couple of temple builds where there are already other temple builds to expand our borders. Set some captured cities to starvation and taxation. I have a ruthless policy of reducing foreign pop to 1 in captured cities by starvation or worker/settler production, even after the war with their civ is over. We have a few ex Korean cities where this was not done and they are among the first to complain as WW sets in.

Military position:
Major push to overthrow Vikings, and we need to take Rusticade - Carthage's last city - to reduce WW. We also have Kwarizmia floating around on a boat somewhere.

Bombard Byoergvin with a Horde with movement points - knock one pop point off it. Move a big stack of Hordes ashore next to Nideros ready for our advance in Scandinavia.

IBT
A galloglass captures a loose worker near Nideros. A Minoan LB kills a horde, and the Minoan knight stack near Theveste retreats to Cirta.
Lots of builds complete and some Ordu Archers are started.
Smiths completes in Kochi.

Turn 211 960 AD
@Hadrumatum:
Use 1/5 BH to bombard LB to 1/4

@Cirta:
Decide to keep the knights on the back foot while we get reinforcements into play to protect strategically important Theveste.
BH bomb the defending musket to 2/4 and destroy the barracks.
4 BH die as we kill one knight and knock 3 more down to 1 or 2 hp.

@Bjoergvin:
BH bombard a msket and 2 pikes. A Khorchin bombard shot kills a 2/3 pike - gotta love lethal bombard ... when it works. BH kill the remaining musket and pike leaving a galliglass defending. A bad click and a wounded BH dies on the galloglass, then a 5/5 BH kills it to take Bjoergvin.

@Norrkoping
City defended by musket, pike, spear. 2 BH die but the city is left defended by a 1/4 spear.

@Goteburg:
2 BH die and Goteburg is captured from 3 pikes with 8 resisters and 3 taxmen.
This pushes the cultural borders back so that another BH can reach and kill the redlined spear and capture Noorkoping

@Orebo (sp?) on the end of a peninsula. A 5/5* horde kills a defending galloglass and destroys the town.

Around Nideros and Stockholm:
5 galloglass and a horse killed without loss. Troops advance on Stockholm and Oslo.

IBT
A galloglass retreats a BH
Russians land a horse near Leptis Major. Serious assault force

Turn 212 970 AD
@Rusticade (Carthage capital):
Our force bombs hoplites to 3/4 adn 2/4 but they die leaving a 1/4 holite standing. We don't seem to have any troops capable of reaching it in the next couple of turns.

@Stockholm:
Defenders are a pike, a musket and a galloglass. They are dispatched with one loss and we capture Stockholm with 5 resisters and 3 taxmen

@Oslo 3 pikes, one knight. We lose one unit and capture Oslo with 10 resisters and 1 taxman.

An elite Khorchin kills a galloglass in the open and we get a Great Leader, who builds the Pentagon in Nideros.

Upgrade 6 gospodar to Ordu Archers (120 gold).

A Kwarismian galley is spotted off the east coast of old Korea. Maybe it contains a settler?

IBT
We get visits from the Vikings and Kwarismia who seem only to want to chat. They have nothing to offer.
Carthage lands 2 hoplites near Utica, currently unoccupied.
2 Russian caravels attack our caravels and sink.
The Pentagon completes in Nideros.
The people riot in a couple of cities and viciously plant trees in our Palace garden.
The French are building Shakespeare's theatre.

Turn 213 980 AD
@Uppsala: Musket and 3 pike killed without losses to capture Uppsala with 9 resisters and 2 taxmen

@Jonkoping: 2pike killed with 1 loss and a Great Leader to capture Jonkoping with 5 resisters and 3 taxmen. Leader builds an army.

@Linkoping: a musket and 2 pikes killed with 1 loss to capture Linkoping with 9 resisters

@Kalmar: Kill one pike, but a BH dies and one retreats and we can't reach it with the rest of our forces.

@Cirta (Minoans): We kill three knights and a Great leader and capture Cirta with 1 resister and 1 taxman. We lost three units.

IBTA couple of Minoan knights recapture Cirta.
WW takes a step up and a couple of cities riot. Suza flips to the Kwarismian leader sitting in his mid-ocean throne room
Russians are building Shakespeare.
We note that there's been a deal of settling going on in Barbie Land. The AI have probably absorbed a lot of barb assaults. The Vikings have a settlement there.

Another Kwarismian galley spotted between Tokugawa and Rajaputana.

Turn 214 990 AD
Recapture Suza from a single spear.

@Kalmar: Kill a pike without loss and capture Kalmar 4 resisters and a taxman. We've run out of Scandanavians to kill, but they live on.

@Cirta: Recapture without loss. Reinforce.
Move troops towards Rusticade.

Sink Kwarismian galley near Korea. Xman is still alive :(
Rush caravels in old Rajaputana and Tokugawa to attack the Kwarismian galley.
Land a force outside the new Viking city in Barbie Land. Well, well, no one's home!
Moving troops and caravels towards the Russian front.

IBT
Vikings land a spear somewhere
Minoan knight kills one unit in Cirta.
Beijing and a couple of otehr cities riot. We really nee dto get Rusticade, and that Xman.

Turn 215 1000 AD
@Malmo in Barbie Land we walk in and look around. We find Elvis and Lord Lucan, but no King of the Scandinavians :(

We sink the Kwarismian galley near old Tokugawa. And Xman lives on!

We are at 20% lux tax.

After Action Report
Russia has just acquired Military Tradition, so Cossacks are now on the menu. No one else has it yet, and Russia seems to think we should pay them for peace

I've been moving new troop builds and some caravels towards Kwanju. We have 18 mixed units loaded up in caravels ready to ship to Russia if required.

We still have unfinished business with Carthage in Rusticade, and that needs to be resolved to try to get our WW down a bit. The Minoan threat in Cirta seems to have ceased for now. I've also shipped some caravels through Theveste to be available to move our Scandinavian forces into Minoa. You'll find some ships with moves left where I've left options open for the next better player.

I executed MB's master plan for getting gems hooked up, but before the setter could build we already had a Viking harbour hooked up to deliver them to our homeland. The spices are already on line.

Here's the save.

Have fun and give my best to that foxy minx Catherine.

Yes, Very good indeed. The viking conquest particularly impressive. :goodjob:

There are quite a few builds going on in rubbish cities that will probably never complete, and probably not do any good if they do. I'm guilty of starting some of them, particularly the markets. These were purely to allow the cities to grow for score. Actually, my opinion is that all the one shield cities with temples in can be switched to wealth. It could increase our income by 50 to 100gpt by the end of the game. This is not to be sniffed at.

I would pay Russia for peace personally. Why not? The question is do we need steam? If not, we can buy MT from Russia on GPT basis and re-declare if prudent. (see footnote). Even if we find that steam would be a good idea later we will be able to buy it from France maybe (since we will not probably have to go to war with her and so Joan can use the money for upgreading with low risk to us) for straight gold.

All productive size 8 cities and above should have markets now. We can short rush them with granaries or BH's.

I would also advocate building some offensive shipping to start hunting down the settlers on boats. Frigates are good for this, and may be available soon.

Giving Russia a GA at this point would be quite a "brave" decision methinks.

Good points. We could take out Minoans and Ottomans, and maybe England as well, and grab some of the unclaimed territory to achieve domination without needing to go for Russia. Russia will probably get a free tech soon, and it will probably be Nationalism. So we could be up against Cossacks plus a high GA production rate of rifles.

AlanH said:

Yes. Not exactly the most economical use of resources. ;)
Good point about nationalism, hadn't thought of that.

So lets cuddle up to Catherine (however distasteful it may seem) and go after everyone else instead shall we? I have to say that now I have actually played the game, I'm beginning to lean towards domination. If we had been playing for conquest from the beginning, Destroying Russia before MT would have been one of my highest priorities.

We can still do it of course, but if we do, lets build a SHED LOAD of canon, and prepare ourselves for a twenty turn war. In fact we should probably start now, so that we can get a few punches in before she reaches the IA.
