Sorry I finished very late today. Deusselkerr writeup is fine, mine was just supposed to bring more details.

No worries. I hope the update was acceptable.

OOC: Elephants are notoriously tricky to domesticate; in fact on earth they've only been captured and tamed, never bred in captivity. As a result, there are usually too few to do mundane tasks like plowing fields; they're more often used for stuff like hauling logs, transporting large loads, or, of course, charging into battle.

Also, would it be possible to upload the map as a .png file? Makes it way easier for other people to edit. :)

OOC: In addition, it is difficult to use elephants for farming when they spend 3/4 of their day eating up to 200kg of crop. Losing 200kg of crop per animal per day for 2-3 hours of work is not very sustainable. So let's roll with mini elephants, eh? For my sanity.

Great update by the way. I like the map like this.

Tyrius Tyr, fifth king of Tyrica, had a dream. It was not a sudden burst of imagination, but rather the culmination of several month's thought. Each night as he prepared for bed, he would spend some time on his balcony, overlooking the city and the sea. He would peer at the river to his right, the sea before him, at his great city of stone and terracotta that separated him from the sea's endless waves. He dreamed of more. What glory would it be, to know that those lights, just visible to his left, those nearby city-states, were his as well? To have a kingdom in truth and not just name, to own many great trade cities? He would turn around and crane his neck to see the distant Ish mountains. What would it be like to have control over the source of his people's military might? Copper and tin as plentiful as necessary, not as dictated by the Ishmen on their rafts.

Tyrius Tyr had a plan. His Great Fleet of biremes, the pride and joy of his military and engineers alike, had explored all along the coast, as far as humanity could be found. To the far north, he heard tales of a great empire across the sea, on a string of islands larger than any currently mapped by the Tyricans. They were called Timuray, Timenara, Timayam, and many others. Some claimed they could fly, others claimed that they were ten feet tall. The one thing all the stories agreed upon was this: they used a strange system of consistent markings on clay tablets, that allowed them to store the words of man. They were not the runes or markings of the Tyricans, but rather a complete system of writing. This would enable the organization he needed to take those lesser cities, to crush the arrogant Ish, and become the nation he dreamed of. And he would pay with the greatest invention known to Tyrica: The secrets of the bireme.

OOC: That expository explains the nature of this trade offer:

From Tyrica to Timurayam:
We have sailed a great distance to find your wondrous people, and have done so because of amazing stories of your ability to record words. We have seen, as we approached your great nation, that your people sail on small canoes. These are not ships of trade and war, but the tools of fishermen. Your military, such as the escort of canoes that brought us in, should not be marginalized to such degrading methods of transportation! Therefore we offer a deal that shall be beneficial to the both of us. It is quite simple:

We humbly ask that you teach our wise men the ways of your writing, so that we may more efficiently and accurately record and transfer information. In return, we shall teach you the secrets of the bireme, so that your navy shall never again be stuck on puny canoes, unable to cross the seas without fear of capsizing.

Our king, Tyrius Tyr, also declares that there shall be eternal good will and friendship between the Tyrican and Timurayam people because of the greatness of this trade, not of blood or wealth, but of information.

OOC: I don't feel I should have to explain the next few bits of diplomacy. (I sent 25 biremes on thr expedition to Timurayam, FYI)

From Tyrica to Nugai:
Great Western Neighbors, I, Tyrius Tyr, send this letter as a word of good will. The Tyrican people are having a bontiful season, and wish you the same. In celebration, let us feast and toast each other, glorifying the great nations that have arisen from our peoples. Let there be peace in the land and honor in our dealings; though we have skirmished in the past, let there be enduring peace as we enter this new age of enlightenment and prosperity!

From Tyrica to the Ishmen:
River Peoples, long have you confused us sea peoples with your strange ways and traditions. Though your faith may be queer and your homes are not united in any one nation, we still extend to you our promise that, as long as you continue to respect us and provide us with the metals necessary for the continuation of Tyrica, that we shall not encroach any farther upriver than we already have, instead focusing on the mysteries of the sea. Take this to heart, so that we may continue our beneficial mutual agreements!

From Timurayam to Tyrica
We accept your expedition to learn our knowledge of "writing". We shall bring your group of people to a temple in Bakartan to learn our knowledge from the priests. we accept your generous offer of the "bireme" and friendship.

Fantastic! Five of my Biremes shall stay with you, so that you may learn of their construction from the physical ships as well as the shipwrights we brought on this expedition. Once you finish your study, they shall return to Tyrica, along with the wise men who shall stay behind to learn the ways of your writing.

OOC: So next turn all my ships should be back in Tyrica, and I should have writing; Timurayam should have knowledge of bireme construction.

I forgot to mention that the next update will cover 50 years.

Studies of the Likanae

The Council of 600

The Council of Six Hundred, the traditional ruling body of the Likanae confederacy that actually consists of 597 families, ruled from prehistoric times up to the early historic era. Commonly dated to the domestication of the first elephants and to pact which both named elephant matriarchs as Junirae as well as established the Council as well as long period of peace, the Council of Six Hundred is unwieldy, corrupt... and, well, perfect for the early development of archaic Likanae culture and traditions.

As for the three missing Junirae, two are families which did not survive the test of time, and one remaining is that of the Great Matriarch, the first domesticated elephant said to have lived hundreds of years and bore scores of children.

The Council of Six Hundred meets for one month at each Headsoul's (Kaijun's) home. A minimum of 300 Junirae are required for voting, although discussion, proposal, and other such boring things may be done with lesser amounts. Often, prominent Kaijuns lead coalitions of Junirae, and are able to mobile dozens, or even a hundred supports to descend upon a council to vote. Exploitation of this fact is inevitable, but is also limited by several safe guards often only brought up in those circumstances.

The Council of Six Hundred generally handles such tasks as: Welcoming parties from neighboring tribes and councils, managing major trade disputes between multiple Kaijun's territory, organizing major projects, taxes, and reserves for hard times, and maintaining the overall size of the Likanae fleet of Elephants from overpopulation through breeding, and underpopulation through selling. However, much of the tasks that a normal government would have to handle are quite well handled by the ingrained caste system of the Likanae society, as well as the inherent mobility said system offers (more later on.)

The Council of Six Hundred has one final power: to delegate certain (or all) authority to a single Kaijun for a single year.

Origins of Likanae and the Council of Six Hundred

As Legends go, the first two Junirae -Dalis and Salid- emerged from mankind after the discovering of agriculture and thus, planned growth of food without murder. The Junirae, or the Souled-Peoples, spread across the world. Many fell into temptation by their Gemirae to attack, murder, or kill fellow Junirae or torture Gemirae despite the wisdom that their Souls bring them.

After many years of suffering a new form of Junirae was discovered by six hundred siblings who were fighting over the fork of the river: The Great Matriarch, who learned the magic of agriculture from watching their efforts, halted their war over the rich soil by dragging a lag as an impromptu plow from the river in land, then digging up the packed soil revealing new fertile land to be grown. Giving up their differences, they decided to form a Council of Equals and abolish former differences such as age or gender within them, and to learn the teachings of the wise Great Matriarch. One brother, seething with jealously, fled downstream, and the Great Matriarch was named the Six Hundredth and Foremost Kaijun among them.

The Six Hundred built their homes along the fork of the river, and might have established their capital there if the scarcity and limited space led to further disagreements. Finally, the squeezed Kaijun simply begun carrying their irrigation further and further, but continued contact and good will. Tensions eased, peace was established, and the Great Matriarch lead an prehistoric and legendary golden age when the caste system was established and the traditions were made.

State/Player: Bexnia
Government: decent stability; Oligarchy
Economy:
Military:
Religions:
Bexnians worship Miarinism. It is the belief that all peoples, men and women, descend from a Holy Matriarch that bred humanity. Although Bexnia government is not structured in a matriarchal way, the word of women is highly influential.

Tech-Edu: bronze age, 99% illiterate

Other Info:
Bexnia has always been, and always will. Since time immemorial, tribes and villages have existed throughout the area. Either congregating in the savanna or working the coasts, the people known now as Bexnians have littered the region originally descending from one tribe, the Miarana. The Miarana were a matriarch type people that inhabited the peninsula. In due time, the tribe split into two patriarch type tribes, the Bexna and the Pulia. The Bexnia occupied the eastern portion of the peninsula, with the Pulia in the mountain valley to the west.

The Pulia are a agricultural society. Working the semi-fertile valley between two dominant mountain ranges, they are able to conjure up a loose kingdom built by farmers. The state is led by a small council of men in the city of Hujim, set on the very tip of the bay jutting into the peninsula. Although they are a more peaceful people, there is still a rivalry between Pulia and Bexnia for control of Hujim. Pulia millitary is very simplistic, with the majority of their forces consisting of an ill-equipped farmer militia. Their experience is determined by the number and frequency of Bexnian raids on nearby villages and farms. Their government is almost a reflection of Bexnia’s.

Hujim, Pulia’s capitol, is determined by Miariniam to be the birthplace of all Miarana descendents. Because of this religious importance, combined with the strategic placement of the city for trade, Bexnia and Pulia have fought countless small wars for possession.

Bexnia is a oligarchy type state that is focused primarily on trade along the coast. Much of Bexnia’s commerce is generated by trade with the Pulia and the Hadun on the other side of the strait. The military of Bexnia is composed of simplistic warbands of soldiers that focus primarily on the pillaging and plundering of Pulia farms and villages. Although they are smart and agile foes in small skirmishes, their army is not particularly fit in terms of large, open battles. Bexnia government is centered around a council of nobles in the capitol city of Bek near the easternmost edge of the peninsula.

Ish blesses us with your kindness. Your wishes are mirrored in ours, great Tyrica.
We recommend you ask Ish for protection on your voyages into the Great Blue.

Beware, we have united a great many of our cousins in coalition against you. Return control of our brethren and homelands to the southeast and this conflict shall be done.

Quite impressive ships you've got. I think you should send us a few and teach us a lesson or two on building them. Either that, or we can teach you a lesson or two on war.
