KA01B - A Simple Deity Space Race - PtW Roster

You're obviously right that we have to get coal by doing a gift-and-trade, and the Iroquois look like our best partners for the manoeuvre. They have two coal sources hooked up right now--perhaps you didn't look under Akwesasne, Space. ;) We should give them Magnetism and Steam Power, and then gain their coal for the cheapest combination of furs and techs they'll accept. If we're lucky, they'll remain behind the research pace all game, and we'll be able to renew this deal until we win just by giving them techs and luxuries.

Edit: Only one Indian coal seems to be hooked up right now; the Indians don't want (or are already getting?) our furs; and the trade route to the Iroquois lands would be safer, since the Indians don't seem to have a port. So definitely the Iroquois, I think.

We may have waited a little too long to start a palace pre-build for ToE, but we should still try it. This isn't the sort of game in which building one very expensive factory, if it came to that, would hurt us much. I'd suggest Valencia as the location for the pre-build, meaning that we should 1) rail Valencia's irrigated plains tile so that the city can feed twelve citizens, 2) merge two native workers into it, 3) give it two tiles presently assigned to Santiago, and 4) rail all its worked tiles as our highest priority in the railroad campaign.

Nah, I just forgot to check the continent after I've found Indias three sources... It is lucky that the Iroqs have their sources connected already!

Fully agreed on the Valencia ToE bid, of course. :) When we're talking about ToE, the thought of Hoover's isn't far away, can we afford another highly productive city on a pre-build? We need to be careful since no wonders are currentle available and we'll need other expensive builds to pre-build the pre-build. :crazyeye:

Space, where do we stand here? Were you going to play another five turns, or is MB up?

turn 5 - 600AD cont'd
Gift Iroqs Magnetism and Steam. Sell Democracy and Furs for Coal.
Set up Valencia for ToE, send 2 native workers there.

IT
Trade TMs with Iroqs
Iroqs and Celts sign a MPP
Gibbon (sic) tells us we are the most powerful of the world!

turn 6 - 610AD
Reorganized the worker since we only need 4 turns, instead of 6 to RR a (flat)tile.
Valencia now produces 25 shields of which 2 are lost on corruption.

IT
The Ottomen send Knights in our land in search for the Zulu, not fun. :(
Japan and Ottomen MPP.

turn 7 - 620AD
No new techs available.
Valencia now has a net value of 25 shields.

IT
The Aztec offer to renew our peace deal, sure! :)
The Ottoman kill an Archer walking our lands.

turn 8 - 630AD
Buy Sanitation from Japan for WM, 20gpt and 1361g.
BTW France has connected an extra Coal, this gives us an alternative option, if needed.
Switch Madrid and Zaragoza to Hospital.

IT
Celts and Ottos ally against the Zulu.
The Ottos request an alliance and a RoP. Hmm signing an RoP hopefully gets rid of the troops on our turf sooner. So alliance no, RoP yes, for 25g that is. ;)

turn 9 - 640AD
Sell Furs to Osman for 29gpt.
Valencia now is fully RR-ed and produces net 28 spt.

IT
Zzz

turn 10 - 650AD
The worker team are not perfect yet, but our FP and Palace are being RR-ed fast too. I've working on infrastructure and for -5gpt we can self-research Electricity in 13 turns at 70%. As it is, we're still at 0% for +622gpt.

The server doesn't want to let me upload my save, I'll try again later.

Good work getting Valencia set up to build ToE. As you point out, there's not much we can do about Hoover yet when the palace is our only useful pre-build.

MB, although it'll require some tedious switching around of our few military units not on anti-flip duty, we have to set things up so that those English knights in the north won't be able to take a city if they sneak-attack us--now, before you hit Enter. At the moment they could raze three of our cities, probably four. If we keep tempting them with empty cities they absolutely will stab us.

The Zulus will give us three workers for Steam Power. Given the type of game we're playing, I'd do it.

Oh, I feel absolutely stupid! Of course they are English Knights, not Otto's. :cringe:
Time Space gets those glasses. I was wondering why those Knights were up so high north to take that worthless Zulu fishing village.

Well, the colours are far too similar--another of the game's interface flaws. I think they gave the job of devising the colour palette to the same genius who worked out the absolute minimum difference between a content face and a happy face.

Happy birthday, MB! :bday:   And as a special gift from your teammates--you're up! :D

Bed Head, you're up. I've PM'd Mad-bax and he needs a skip.

Please note my comment to MB four posts up,about the English knights in the north. Good luck!

That makes me up in all my SGs at a time when it is hard to sit down and play 10 full turns. I think I may need a skip as well.

Kaiser Berger, over to you, then.

Bed Head, if that wasn't an absolute, definite request for a skip, we'll fit you in after KB.

Preturn- I rearrange some units to cover our northern cities. I ship Steam to Shaka for 12gpt and three workers. I decide to leave us with min science for the moment, at least until we have libraries and Unis in our core. Researching right now would be wasteful to some extent.

IT- We lose our supply of gems, but we're still happy, so I don't renew.

T1 660

Not much to do. I rush some infrastructure and railroad a bit.

IT- zzz

T2 670

More libraries/Unis rushed.

IT- Iroquois and Ottomans sign MPP.

T3 680

Waiting on Electricity pays off, as France and Ottomans get it. We get it for horses, 1238g and 120gpt from France. I sell Electricity around and pick up around 80 gpt and two luxes.

IT- The English take the Zulu fishing village. The Iroquois decide to land a couple of tourists next to Barcelona in the form of a spear and a sword.

T4 690

The tech pace is finally starting to pick up a bit, as Japan, France and Ottomans all pick up Industrialization. We ask our Iroquois friends to leave and they do not comply, choosing to go to war. The intruders are quickly taken care of.

IT- zzz

T5 700

We go and get coal from France wince we're no longer recieving any from the Iroquois.

IT- We lose our supply of spices.

T6 710

I kill some more crap that the Iroquois drop on our shoreline. A few more libraries are rushed.

IT- zzz

T7 720

Not much new.

IT- zzz

T8 730

Ottomans, France, and Japan learn Replaceable Parts. This is looking good to me. With our prebuild, we should have no problem getting ToE, and with a monopoly on Atomic Theory and Electronics, we'll be able to sweep up the tech the AI is so kindly researching for us.

IT- zzz

T9 740

More of the same. India knows RP as well.

IT- Zulu kick it at the hands of the Ottomans.

T10 750

Not much new.

Summary

Our rivals are researching nicely while we build up our infrastructure. We're going towards Sci. Method with one scientist right now, but that can be increased at anytime. There are some Englhish knights in our core, but I believe tey were heading after the Zulu. Now that they're gone, they should go home. Also, we need to keep an eye out for Iroquois landings.

Sounds like good progress. :goodjob:

Got it.

750 (0): I don't think we can afford to let Industrialization wait on the post-ToE trades, or even on a twofer, since the four tech leaders all already have it. So, 145 gpt and furs to Japan for Industrialization. I then switch nineteen cities to factory builds.

The Ottomans complete Universal Suffrage in Sogut.

760 (1): Our workers build railroads and mine irrigated tiles. The latter is important, since railroads have given many of our good cities large, useless food surpluses, as usual at this point in the game.

The Ottomans are building ToE in Iznik, which is well behind the pace of our pre-build (Iznik 17 spt, no factory, ToE due in 22 turns).

770 (2): The French and Japanese also have SciMeth, so we'll be buying it at the fourth-place price and have a twofer opportunity with India. 133 gpt to France for Scientific Method, then SM and 56 gpt to India for Replaceable Parts.

Valencia switches to ToE, due in six turns.

Valladolid factory --> rifleman.

780 (3): We don't have rubber, which is needed for some spaceship parts. There seem to be nine sources in the world--one held by each of the civs on the other continent, one by the English, one by the Celts, and three by the Ottomans. One of the Ottomans' extra sources is already being exported, and one isn't connected. In the long run, we'll probably want to take England's source. For now, I rush a galleon in Santander on the inland sea, so that we can send workers over to hook up the Ottomans' third source.

790 (4): SciMeth to America for wines, 38gpt, 22g, and WM.

Santiago factory --> rifleman, Murcia factory --> barracks. We have to build up our army a little. (Later: now there's one of the great understatements of my SG career. :crazyeye: )

800 (5): Replaceable Parts to the Aztecs for spices, 4g, and their WM, SciMeth to the Iroquois for gems, 18g, and their WM, and we have all eight luxuries. I do this partly to push the tech pace, and partly in hope that Love Days will cut corruption in our second-ring cities.

Eight cities go into Love status.

810 (6): Railing and mining.

The four tech leaders have the Corporation.

Toldeo factory --> rifleman, Murcia barracks --> guerrilla.

820 (7): The three tech leaders other than the Indians have Espionage.

Valencia THEORY OF EVOLUTION --> factory. In a brilliantly innovative stroke we take Espionage and Communism. Well, no, Atomic Theory and Electronics as usual. ;)

I still miss the Glories-of-Nature ToE movie from Civ II.

Madrid factory --> coal plant (we get Hoover one turn faster this way).

Pamplona factory --> rifleman.

830 (8): Ugh. The third Ottoman rubber source turns out to be connected, although the Ottomans haven't been shown as having extra rubber on any turn this round. So they must have hooked it up and traded it away in the same interturn; and we really are going to have to take England's source at some point, unless something unusual happens.

We renew our RoP with the Ottomans, on even terms.

Barcelona factory --> guerrilla.

840 (9): With railroad construction almost complete, I merge 11 workers into west-coast cities, for a net gain of 55 gpt.

The Americans, the fifth-place AI in tech, have Corporation, and we get it for nothing but iron. A little surprisingly, no one has Refining or Steel yet.

We renew our furs deal with the Ottomans for 36 gpt, and I appear to be concluding a peaceful, productive round when:
