King Juan Carlos of Spain abdicating

Is he jumping or being pushed? It looks like the latter (but I know nothing about the Spanish royals).

Moreover, it's a good thing for a nominal head of state to retire after a certain age, anyway, I think.

(Why it's called "abdication" - though I know it is - I'm not so sure.)

It has been forced by Littlefinger and Varys ...

Seriously. Apparently he is leaving. He is old and sick, he has been operated on for more than 5 times in the last 2 years. The average Spaniards have their king in a low consideration right now due to some excesses -While spaniards are suffering several cuts he was on high cost safaris*- On the other hand his daugther and son-in-law are involved in a corruption trial. All this issues and more have lead Spanish Monarchy to the lowest rates of popularity in decades.
It seems that Felipe is better considered right now.

* In one of those safaries he got injuried, Spanish army got to rescue him in Bostwana. It was also know by this incident that he was cheating the Queen

I have a suggestion for a successor, only marginally less disgusting too!

And ladies...he's single! (men need not apply)

Hey, the first gay dynastic couple! I'm sure they can adopt a whole horde of orphans of Spanish origin. They could even turn out to have some royal blood in 'em.

I bet it'd make the headlines.

I'm a little disappointed I wasn't picked, but that's nepotism for you.

I think if the U.S. ever needed a monarch, we'd have to have Vanna White. She smiles, waves, and is well-liked. She's used to being in the public eye and now the board is managed by computer so they don't even really need her to turn the letters anymore.

Tis a shame that we no longer live in an age when abdication meant that your head was, more than likely, about to be pushed from your body. What a weak world we live in now. :(

I'll just say one thing: November 9th and a desperate atempt of the state's machinery to try to stop it. That's all I had to say.

Uh.. The Spanish monarch abdicating has the relative effect of a deputy saying "Screw you all, I quit". Except, the deputy can vote. I doubt your King could do even that. Maybe a veto?

No, it's a make-up operation which tries to fool independentists by pretending that things can change within Spain. It's pure lampedusian change.

Or a mysterious hunting "accident". Those are always fun.

Death by sex too, but we don't see a lot of that anyways for whatever reason.

I like Juan Carlos, so it's good that he's abdicating now before the country goes completely to piece. I wouldn't want to be remembered for that.

I guess I see it too as "screw this I'm outta here", though I feel it won't do much in the long run either way.

Partially agree, I would extend your afirmation that this is an attempt to stop Spanish democracy and its joke institutions falling apart

That's because you don't know to much about Juan Carlos, he looks hearty, but he is arrogant, womanizer, prepotent, and so on

He has a mysterious hunting accident last year in bostwana, he was chasing elephants, slipped off and broke the hip. The gobernment had to send the army to rescue him, the whole country discovered them that he was cheating the queen, that he had a lover, and that he was having luxury trips paid with public money while their countrimen where suffering cuts in health care system and education
So the Spanish people support the monarchy I guess? They wouldn't want to see it abolished?

An average spaniard would say that he does not support the monarchy, that they support Juan Carlos. I personally never belived that. Now we will see what is the truth.

Does the monarchy bring in any money, like the British one does (I think)?

Yes, they receive, but the ammount they received it is not completely public

I'm an arrogant womaniser myself. :3

In any case, I admit I'm biased 'cause I'm very much stubbornly monarchist. A childhood in Thailand will do that to you.
