Giant Spider?

tcristensen, I actually know about that model because I saw it in some of your screen-shots. :D But I'm not so sure I would want that in my game... :p

Perhaps you should have a pre-game-option for enabling "fantastical" features. Because someone who knows why there is a upper limit on how large an arthropod can get (in real life) might be put off by something like this.

On the other hand - some players might love this sort of thing. :king: But both player types would have the option to choose to use it - or not.

How do you explain Hitler with Longbows or Hammurabi with tanks? The game in itself has no bearing on reality, you ought to know that. I find it whimsical when people says stuff about fantastical features then revels in games where Lincoln has aircraft or Stalin is attacking with axemen?!?

Please, Civilization IV is all about the fantastic, nothing less!

Giant Spider?

Thanks, I forgot about that one.

Sounds interesting, why is there such a limit?

Because of their prey. Their prey is small, and they have evolved to the perfect size to thrive off that prey. Unless you add giant houseflies to the game, there can't be giant spiders.

Not true at all. Anyone who has seen the final "Lord of The Rings" movie knows that orcs and hobbits are perfectly acceptable prey for giant spiders as well.:D

I, of course, don't agree at all. But then again, I only play RFC, so... (Meaning that all Civs appear in their historical context. So no stone age Americans. :p)

I never said I knew the answer (or that Jarlaxe Baenre did, for that matter ) but I believe it has to do with the fact that these creates absorb oxygen through their skin (or equivalent) and thus the laws of physics gets in the way. (You basically need lungs in order to grow bigger than some size.) Also, the exoskeleton thing only works on a somewhat smaller scale - the sheer weight of a 10 feet arthropod would crust itself.

But I'm not any kind of expert (on much of anything, really). I just know that there is a good scientific reason why the mega-fauna of old never included gigantic arthropods... And thus being able to build a Gigant Spider unit is somewhat off-putting to me, personally.

No offense intended, or anything.

iirc, it is to do with getting oxygen to the inner organs. Spiders and insects do not have lungs to air into their bodies they just have air tubes. If there is more oxygen in the atmosphere they can and did (late carboniferous period) get much larger. Those tubes evolved into lungs and gills in bigger critters.

There is also a camel unit in WoC format somewhere in the WoC project.

What he said. :agree:

Not sure what qualifies as animal...Dune Wars has the Sandworm, and in the FfH2 modmods there is at least one Lizard man civ.
There are also some types of chimeras, like a minotaurus, a manticore, a sphinx, 2 Anubis units, etc.
A buffalo rider and a deer rider are in FfH2, and i think we have buffalo as resource and an ox cart / 2 head mutated cow cart somewhere.

As I am coding an evolution system, I'm mostly looking for actual animals, but some fantasy units do help (like the Sea Dragon recently converted from Atlantica Online by SaibotLieh, which can be used as a sea dinosaur of sorts).

These help quite a bit, specially the buffalo and deer riders, thanks! :)

Can anyone point to the location of the Buffalo riders? I would very much like to add that to Extreme. The deer rider also sounds interesting -- perhaps making them flying and can be only created in the frozen north (or south) polar regions.
