LK130 - Ottomans, Monarchy, Balanced Map

Probably wont matter before 30 or 50 turns, but still good to prepare

I don't think we have to decide yet. However, troop build up is always a good thing regardless of war.

685BC :
axe kill barb. I left him unpromotted

640BC :
worker in ankara -> courtouse

625BC :
axe -> axe in erdine the new guy goes in capital so warrior can scout

610BC :
scout warrior kill warrior, spot german land down down south

580BC :

Temple of artemis built in istambul, barrack started
565BC :

Research monarchy

550BC :

I accept as the only one annoyed with him is ghandi who wont backstab us

535BC:
lk130_ghandi.jpg

i refuse but we earn no bad modifier for that

520BC:
Whoah, Ragnar has a nice capital, 4 sea ressources + production

505BC :
Ghandi propose pigs for ivory ! should i accept ;) ?
:mischief: :rolleyes:

well, i pass on this one

490BC :
put istambul on library

475BC :
iron mined, need road

turnset resumed :
fairly uneventfull, did a fair amount of scouting.

built axes and a spear.
did not shop nor whipped anything else than ToA as the workers were busy
hooking ressources and laying down cottages and farms. Bursa would benefit form chopping its library though.

we are doing ok in production and GNP, but still have some work on the military side. We are catching up, so no real worry.

there is no real good site for building city #5.

Ragnar has spare gems that should come online at some point. Could be worthwhile to keep an eye on that

Our pigs should be connected sometime.

WARNING: production in Erdine is auto axeman (you can still insert in queue with ctrl &/or shift).
It make sense for a military city, but if it is bad SG etiquette, let me know.

New Updates
We need to plan for our GP coming up. If we get a prophet we should build a shrine. The income isn't much at this time, but every buck helps. In addition, it will make a larger empire easier if we send a missionary alone to build a new city for instant culture, and another buck.
If we get a GM, we should snag metal casting and then squeeze in some forged to improve our production.

I would like to start discussing the next city. I disagree that there are no good sites left. Blue dot can take the pigs from the capitol for growth, has 8 grasslands to cottage, and a couple of hills. The biggest thing we lack is a good income city. Blue dot will provide that.

I agree on the shrine.
But then we could think of missionary spam brennus & ragnar. that would allow us to use the religious civics to our benefit

was looking for something like blue dot on the flood plains near erdine, did not found something very good.

Blue dot is not amazing but solid commerce city. well spotted.

For later production city we have the following spot too. Pre-biology can work 4 mines (3 plains + 1 grassland hills)

lk130_prod_city.jpg

however we wont need that before 1000 years or so, imho

Got it. haven't looked at the save yet.

GP = Confucian shrine
GM = metal casting

Start on settler for blue dot? GL in Istanbul? Start massing troops for Shaka? What kind of ratio of swords to axes would you like?

I think the sword/axe ratio is more matter of personal taste than efficiency.

I tend to go with few shock axes (at least 3), rest as swords, +1 spear and 2 horse based units. reinforcements as axes for garrison of captured cities.

can live with anything else though.

For the settler, i would wait a bit, but LK seemed to want it soon ?

I don't know how soon the AI would steal that spot. That makes it hard to call when to take it. IMHO we do need a income city soon. We have lots of production, but little in the way of tiles that can use cottages.

Pre-flight: Shaka has iron, copper and ivory. Swell. The GW is in Ulundi. I place markers on the dots and note a phantom Zulu city.

460:
Ankara CH -> library
Edirne Ax -> sword

445:
Brennus has a religious conversion to confucianism

430:exploring

415:
fog busting warrior skewered by barb archer

400:
Edirne sword -> sword

385:
nada

370:
Freddie wants open borders. I check F4 and he does not play well with others. No. Hinduism spreads to our lands, but it's nothing but superstition

355:
Ragnar we cancel our demands with Gandhi. No.

340:
Istanbul Lib -> temple
Edirne sword -> sword

325:
Ananda (GP) starts on his journey to Edirne.

310:
Barb archer incoming at Ankara. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice...

295:
Gandhi starts channelling Isabella. He demands CoL. We use the no rose garden excuse. Brennus demands we cancel our deals with Gandhi; since he's a good confucian, we can't stand Gandhi either after that last demand and his latest settlement. Ananda completes his journey and builds the Kong Miao.

280:
Edirne sword -> ax

265:
Ankara Lib -> (Blue dot) settler
Bursa Lib -> court

250:
Monarchy -> alpha?
Brennus captures Ghuzz. Conan is killed in the sack of the city.

Very quiet set. The archer is wandering around to the NE of Ankara. There's a spear en route to Ankara cause of Gandhi's new city. If we're going to war, we'll need cats. Almost everyone has iron and/or copper. Gandhi is the only one with alpha. Happiness issues should resolve when we revolt to HR and hook up the wines.

I forgot to take a picture of the army, but we've got at least 4 swords, 6 axes and a spear.

Got it ... looked at the save, seems like Shaka is settling aggressively towards us ... a war with Zulu is inevitable, I think.

I would go on with the blue dot and pursue Literature, push a bit more to beef up of military in case Zulu decided he ran out of space. Any comments before I play?

I just got to work, so it would be about 12 hours before I could look at the game to comment.
I agree we need to keep pushing military making sure we have a nice mix of troops.

Now HR is in, we should change civics asap, as we can solve our happiness problems with military units. Growth is the answer to many things and MMII UB will help us down the road.

Ghandi seems to have quite a tech lead, and is man to hold a grudge if not aggressive. we should take care of not angrying him more than needed.

I would not wait for cats to declare war on Shaka. We need some more units though.

Shaka has a settler wandering around

If we want to grow, we need some farms in Istambul and Bursa.

I try in my solo games to have at least +4, preferrably +5 food. It really makes a difference down the road. Even if the rest is cottaged.

I played that last set with an eye towards setting up towards Shaka. Then Gandhi demands CoL for free and puts the city next to our wheat. If that's not passive aggressive...

Regarding Blue Dot City, the settler is in the pipeline and could be chopped. there's a warrior on shaka's border to let us know when he starts to run a settler towards Blue Dot.

I sent the spear to Ankara cause Shaka has no horses and Gandhi does IIRC.

My concern at this point is that Gandhi has/is working on Lit.

Here's a screenie I didn't have time to post this morning before I went to work. The world before my set:
Civ4ScreenShot0012.JPG

EDIT: and we really only need to take 2 cities from Shaka: uMgungunlov... and Ulundi. :beer:

I think Shaka is a threat and Gandhi is a PITA. We may wish to consider turning Brennus to our brother of the faith after our first war.

Monarchy came in my last turn and I didn't want to start Greyfox off with anarchy. Workers are in position to hook up the wines. We're also building a temple in Istanbul; it should have no issues after the civics switch, the wine hook up and the building's finish.

If we're going after Shaka we need to not forget axes cause of the annoying Impi. We should also be roaded to react quickly to Impi on our improved resources.

The shrine boosted our income from +3 to +11. We need to organize our religion at some point by hook or crook.

And now for an idiot question interlude. Do pointy stick techs count against WFYABTA?

I agree we need to keep pushing military making sure we have a nice mix of troops.
Not sure how much we can mix other than axes/swords if we go after Shaka. No need for spears, he has no horses.

ankara maybe should switch to military deterance after the settler is built. Preposition some deterence for Gandhi. Throw in a few spears for his inevitable horses? Bring this up only for discussion, not recommending at this time.

MMII UB will help us down the road.
agreed

sorry, for being long-winded. I can only post about once every 12 hours so I tend to babble. :crazyeye:

P.S. might be fun to get Freddie and Bella into a war after alpha... :crazyeye:

If we take Ulundi and uMgungun... our southern border is protected. If we are brennus's brothers, we have a clear shot at Gandhi (long term thinking).

EDIT: and we really only need to take 2 cities from Shaka: uMgungunlov... and Ulundi. :beer:
I also want kwaDukuza. Without that city, Shaka would have an outpost in our rear zone.

New Updates
This is the first time I built Temple of Artemis, but I really like the free priest. With our small empire size +8 dollars a turn is great. That alone pays for our cottage city.

I agree we want to revolt to Monarchy on the inherited turn.

We could get into a culture war with India over the wheat. I think we should build a temple after the settler.

At some we want to side track to meditation to that we can build some monasteries to spread our religion. Getting missionaries into our eventually Zulu cities will help to recover the conquest cost quickly.

beelining to construction now is 27 turns (and we should really continue on alpha now) so a meaningfull force of cats is 40 turns or so.

Can (should) we wait that much ?
