Maggy Thatcher dead

Thanks a lot (I'm a baby boomer, albeit among the youngest, having been born in the sixties).

Oh pschaw. I classify myself at least partially as a piece of the Cold War as I so classify anyone who has a decent memory of the Berlin Wall falling.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've always liked her for reasons that are completely inexplicable.

That's not to say that she wasn't wrong politically in most respects.

I still have The Iron Lady lying around here and don't know what to watch tonight, so I may very well do that.

I loathe RIP threads and want to see them die, but that one made me lol...
RIP RIP threads?

RIP to a great woman and leader of a country. She did what she could to make Great Britain a great place to live and those after her have ruined what she tried to accomplish. The finest British Prime Minister after Churchill.

I used to think that left side of the spectrum has more sense and more tact. Thatcher hasn't been in office for twenty years now, so her death doesn't even influence anybody's life. Except his relatives.
I certainly didn't mourn the passing of RM Nixon or Ronald Reagan, as I won't GWB either. GHWB is a different story. He served honorably even though I disagreed strongly with many of his policies.

Margaret Thatcher lived to be 87 after suffering from dementia for many years.

And your comments regarding the handful of "gentlemanly" comments in the sea of just the opposite in the Chavez death thread is irony at its finest. I particularly enjoyed the ones about the fireworks.

yeah, we're all running out of bail-out money.

As Margaret Thatcher said "The Problem with Socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money." We are certainly seeing that right now in far too many countries.
It is ironically her legacy, as well as that of Ronald Reagan and GWB, which is continuing to curse us.

Ken Livingstone went further than Miliband, however, saying Thatcher's policies had been "fundamentally wrong" and were responsible for "every real problem" being faced in the UK.[232]

"There are still people in my party who believe in consensus politics. I regard them as Quislings, as traitors... I mean it." Margaret Thatcher

While watching the movie (and realizing that Maggie was married to Viserys Targaryen), I pondered why I like her. I've come to the conclusion that I tend to like people who stand in for their beliefs no matter what, even if their beliefs are totally dumb.

Probably the worst thing that's been said about her in this thread so far.

Nah, she's also been compared to Hitler and I would certainly put them as:
Churchill < Thatcher < Hitler

I used to call myself a leftist, but now that I have read this thread, I don't think I want to be associated with that gang anymore.

Then you're not one. You're just another so-called 'moderate' who bases his political convictions on behaviour that strikes him as 'reasonable', going every which way, a leaf in the wind.

My news feed is full of people mourning her passing. Most are Southeast Asians who probably don't know crap about British politics anyway and can be expected to be extremely right wing.

I used to call myself a leftist, but now that I have read this thread, I don't think I want to be associated with that gang anymore. Especially when you compare how fine gentlemen these two guys were in the Chavez-thread:

Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

Thatcher was a very important public figure in her lifetime. Don't expect those with strong opinions to bite their tongues because she's dead. Those close to her can mourn, but her death was neither tragic in the way it happened nor was it tragic that it happened. She lived a long life, accomplished more in it than most could ever hope, and accumulated a great deal of ill will along the way. That's the way it goes.

Alright, can we all at least agree that, regardless of her politics, she's an inspiration to all aspiring female politicians?

In the same way Stalin was an inspiration to Georgians everywhere I guess.

Another soul aspires to enlightenment. Maybe one of these years we'll all care about issues in the light of people, love, and greater humanitarian interest rather than in the shadow of modern forms of petty tribalism. :mischief:

I'm certainly not glad she's dead, but I'm certainly glad that "her decade" is dead. Both the adulation and the vitriol are unpleasant, one because I can't stand her policies and the other because dancing on people's graves is always in extremely poor taste.

I take it you didn't read some of the quotes I posted earlier.

Yeah, I agree it's not exceptionally tragic, and I don't expect people to shut up about disaggreeing with her. But it makes absolutely no sense to celebrate her death. Isn't it enough that she's got no power, must she be dead for people to be happy? That isn't politics anymore, that's like religious fanaticism.

Then you're not one. You're just another so-called 'moderate' who bases his political convictions on behaviour that strikes him as 'reasonable', going every which way, a leaf in the wind.

That sounds about right. A characterization I can be proud of. :)
