Why is it suddenly taboo to say anything negative about her now that she's dead? What about people whose lives were directly negatively impacted in a huge way by her policies? Should they take a moment to say "great lady, totally ruined my life, but since she's dead now I guess she was cool"?

How dare we not respect a person who supported apartheid and wasn't at all sympthetic to the plight of blacks in South africa. How dare we not respect a woman whose own homophobic attitudes impacted upon the government's response to aids. How dare we not respect a person who ordered the sinking of a fleeing ship, killing young agentinian soldiers.

You keep talking about "you all on the left" being vitriolic... who's the one calling other members "dicks" and "pricks" directly? I haven't even said anything positive or negative about Thatcher, and you're already attacking me with some intense "vitriol".

Thing is, these criticisms were being made before her death, why should any of us remain silent on her disgusting involvement with dictators and other such failings, failings which had a big, negative impact on other people.

Gee whiz, between the privatized funeral, payments for respectful silence, and the impending spike in flammable effigy sales, Ms Thatcher might end up doing more for the UK economy in death than she did in life!

Now as to the market rate, well, it will have to go at least some way toward compensating for years of unemployment and economic malaise, so I don't know. Probably in the order of tens or hundred thousands of pounds for 24 hours of respectful silence per person? How does that sound? Nevertheless, I'm sure the market WILL determine the right price before long.
