Marco Rubio's Rebuttal and his WTH moment

It's genius really. Shoot down every non-white-guy appointee, then compain about all the non-white-guy appointees, even though you don't really care about having non-white-guy appointees. Frikkin' briliant, I tell ya.

That is 100% in line with every other political move they've made since summer of 2009. Shoot down the idea then blame the other side for not doing the thing they shot down.

This is why I hate you internet! ... Just why is this an issue. This is the dumbest thing I've seen in a long time. Does no one EVER get a drink while they are giving a long speech?

Hell, if he drinks water,... you think maybe he goes number 1?

Froma has a long list of why you could not like this guys speech... this is the dumbest item anyone could say.

It works though, don't it? Who outside of Washington honestly watches C-SPAN? Easy to spin things like this when nobody knows what goes on in Congress.

Now wait a second...you think a guys career is over....because he reached down and took a drink of water?
Wow. Just wow.
I predict no one will remember it in a week.

Yeah why is this even news worthy ?
Just a very minor slip up and some nervousness by Rubio.

Sounds a lot like pass a law, completely screw up the economy, pass another law to "fix" it, things get worse, blame the private sector!

And government grows larger.

This actually makes me like Rubio more.

It's just a little moment of humanity! Everyone makes awkward mistakes sometimes, and I prefer human politicians over perfectionist robots who worry about their outside appearance all the time. The media shouldn't ridicule him for that.

Regardless of what he did I find it sad that there exist so relatively young people that are no different than those old dudes in their 70s.

It was hilarious and I hope this leads him to complete and utter political failure :)

I didn't see it, but reaching for a glass of water is cool by me.

Yeah can somebody enlighten me what was wrong about him taking a drink?

Rubio should have been much better prepared by having the water nearby.

Then there is the question of why he needed it so badly. Was it due to the lighting which he was unfamiliar but shouldn't have been? Or did he start to panic a bit knowing it was a live performance that he couldn't redo? He seemed to be quite nervous during the entire performance. His mannerisms look coached and wooden.

Compare this to Bobby Jindal's response that many people think was a complete bomb, despite it being much more polished and apparently far more practiced:

5 Lessons For Marco Rubio From Bobby Jindal's State of the Union Response

Apparently the substance of a politician is less important that our perceptions of their ability to perform in front of the camera.

Five women and four kids were killed in Afghanistan by a missile today.
But this is the big news.

Remember: American free media is not propaganda.

The media talks about what people want to hear. And yes, people prefer hearing about silly gaffes that don't matter at all over reports of the deaths of people who live on the other side of the world.

That's rather sad, but the fact that this conveniently distracts from what the government does doesn't mean it's propaganda.

The media talks about what people want to hear.

"The people" cannot want to hear about what they are not told about over and over and over again.

Mention in a blurb on page 6c about the 9 dead civilians, "the people" will not want to hear more.

Mention in a blurb on page 6c about Rubio drinking water during a speech, "the people" will not want to hear more.

Headline on the front page about the 9 dead civilians with a big color picture, "the people" will want to hear more.

It's called the microscope effect.

Yeah, it is propaganda. It is distractions. Smoke and mirrors.

You mean as you just called it:

Only a few seconds of his "response" to the SOTU brought a choking nausea and breathless panic to my chest. For the love of God no. We might as well turn to self flagellation upon the horns of a lesser demon as turn to the likes of Rubio or his ilk.

This rotting diseased filth must be extricated root and branch. There can come no blessing upon and evil and rotten foundation.
I'm not exactly sure what provoked such a strong reaction to yet another recitation of the GOP's talking points, which have been largely the same since the Reagan years, especially during a Democrat administration. But there you have it...

If Rubio had reached for a glass of pink cool aid he would have invoked global socialist worship. Missed opportunity imo.

"The people" cannot want to hear about what they are not told about over and over and over again.
The media will choose their topics depending on what its potential readers/viewers may find interesting. They don't have any interest in investing resources to change or influence what people care about. And they shouldn't.

That's what public media are for, but that's another topic.

Yeah, it is propaganda. It is distractions. Smoke and mirrors.
No, it's not. For it to be propaganda, they'd need to do it with the direct goal of distracting from negative government actions. But they don't. Their goal is to sell their product.
