In terms of modern paradigms, wouldnt MLK be best considered in terms of the christian democratic mold?

In his early career, perhaps, but by the end he was certainly moving towards Christian socialism. "Christian democracy" is a somewhat ambiguous term, after all, and can mean different things depending on the time and place.
