Funny how people keep repeating that MLK was a Republican when there is nothing to show he was.
Do you conservative types believe he had the same values as Beck and co ?

Strange that the bloke who knew him best keeps saying he was not a Republican, but white conservatives know better.

And MLK wasn't just an "omg, he's a socialist!" but a self-identified and committed socialist. A Christian Socialist, based on the theory that Jesus would have liked the idea of (non-Marxist) socialism (quite well-founded; better-founded than the idiotic theory that he would have had any truck with modern capitalism).

It was a longer process than that. The Democrats weren't really free of the racist, segregationist, Southern authoritarians until the 1970s. The Republicans didn't fully embrace and gain the racist, segregationist, Southern authoritarians until the 1980s. The Republicans were the big business and Eastern economic elitist party even in Lincoln's day, and that's never really changed.

Exactly. And that's entirely understandable. What isn't so much understandable is moving from calling him a socialist in order to discredit him in the eyes of many to calling him a Republican to co-opt his memory. It's quite a leap.

The thing that truly amazes me, is that the sheeple that might believe this are already true believing zombies. So something like this does not increase the number of people who may vote for the Republicans. Waste of effort.

Actually, it was originally used as a variant of the older term "racialism", which had connotations of racial superiority/supremacism that some wished to avoid. The two terms were later conflated during and after WW2, although, ironically, "racialism" was later used in the sense that "racism"(although that usage never became universal).

That's what I was told when living in the US.

In detail what was said was: "Back then the poor Southerners were Democrats (Republicans were the "rich" people party). Now they are Republicans".

Even though Republican is still the rich people party (low taxes in general, but in context especially for the wealthy), nowadays the wealthy white modern "educated" vote nevertheless + poor uneducated non-whites vote for obvious reasons for the Democrats.
Sure those are broad generalizations, but you get the idea.

I am genuinely interested in any insights. (It should improve the understanding of the OP)
