MELI1 - There aint no leaving the Union - 5CC AW Monarch

Excellent turns Greebley.

That trick of taking three cities in one turn and getting another army was simply brilliant.

 :goodjob:

Great turns ! If someone manages that, we can build the Pentagon too :D.

Very very nice set of turns.

I would like to mention one other technique that I think will be useful in this game. That is the building of outposts. An outpost on an mountain has a radius of 3 if I remember correctly. It will allow us to keep constant vigilance over the lands we manage to clear of enemy units. Once we have rails and have cleared a significant portion of our island, we can keep a smaller force at home that kills units as they land.

I am guessing with us razing cities, we will have plenty of workers to do this with. Even now we can use them on mountains where they have a further range than armies and can keep track of units as the approach us.

I would think them standard fare is nCC games?

Notes: I left the army in Mayan territory unmoved for the next player to decide what to do with. Chicen Itza is right there, and our army can probably hurt it, but I doubt they only have 2 defenders in there. The other army is on its way, along with several other knights.

I can't imagine that the Mayans have more than 4 cities left, which means we've almost cleared out our continent. Full picture in next post.

I've been using workers to build outposts so that we can keep a strong eye on our lands, so don't freak out over the little towers that are everywhere. We have so many slaves from city razing that I don't know what else to do with them.

I've had us researching Metallurgy in the assumption that we would need Cavalry to really make the difference; but now that the Mayans are broken, we may want to go for Astronomy next so that we can start building the fleet we'll need to invade the 2nd continent and avoid being invaded ourselves.

Take it away!

Good Work Corrado :) The first civ Killed!

It might be worth raising science to 100%. This seems a very reasonable place to spend our money. We could get Metallurgy in 8 at -80 gpt if we wanted. (or in 11 at -35 gpt). We have 2400+ at the moment.

Edit: The Mayans have 8 cities left so it will take a bit of effort to kill them. I don't expect it to be hard however.

I think Metallurgy, Astronomy. physics, Magnetism at full. We can then send our armies across to pillage stuff while we work on Mil Tradition.

The faster we research the better imho, so we can damage the other civs homelands.

Maya has 8 cities left?

They didn't look nearly that strong on the map. Hope they haven't settled off-continent...

The armies definitely made the conquest of Mayan lands a lot easier- they did far more than any 6 Knights could have. Hopefully, they'll still be effective once we learn how to send them over to the next continent...

The AI may target the armies on flat if it has nothing else to go for. Or we may be able to pillage in peace. I haven't quite figured out when the AI chooses between the two. In a recent game the AI would not attack my Conquistador armies on mountains (which are totally awesome BTW - they can move and pillage 9 squares a turn - makes the Spanish an suprisingly strong AW Civ). That is str 4, so I am guessing the AI would not attack a fortified Knight army or in hills or mountains.

If we have another target for the AI to go for (a beachhead town for example) then it would almost certainly leave the army completely alone, unless the town had too many defenders....

Please skip me - I won't make the 48 as I seem to have contracted a bad head cold and need to interview for a job tomorrow.

Okay, serious strategy discussion time, here.

We have a serious hurdle to overcome now. We've conquered our continent, and done a fine job. We have general tech parity, and a few strong armies.

And we're going to fall behind very quickly. The AIs all research much faster than we do normally, and add in their larger size and the fact that they'll trade with each other, and we should expect a serious tech gap to come along soon. Especially now that we have a forced peacetime because we're trying to figure out how to cross the sea.

Tech-wise- I think we want to research Military Tradition before Astronomy and Navigation. With Cavalry, we can send out units nearly as strong as our armies, but we won't need to wait for Galleons to transport them. (IIRC, Caravels take 3 units, meaning our armies can't be transported.) If we wait on MT, we're just going to be twiddling our thumbs, waiting to get Galleons, and allow our enemies to build up their forces.

Military- We should switch Knight production over to SM and Cannon. There's little chance that we'll avoid having to put Cavalry up against Riflemen; we're too close to the end of the Middle Ages. So, we'll need massive bombardment stacks in order to avoid massive losses.
