[UNIT] Mighty Ships Et Al

Putun Galley, used mostly for trading goods across the Caribbean and coasts of Eastern Mexico to the Southern parts of coastal north america. Based off your Haida Galley. I took the textures from your Meso Trireme.

Fyi: The Putun with their seaworthy boats, emblazoned with serpent heads, traveled long distances in search of more primitive peoples, who could be enslaved.

Your what-if ships, are abit less what if Toad :)

Just want to point out the Haida galley is Matsudas baby. Not mine. ;)
What-If ships are the most difficult. I did not enjoy making the mesotrireme and caravel.
You really need to be an artist to design stuff like that.

Oh my mistake OO. Credit to Matsuda for that then. I've also worked on the War Galleon abit more. I want the hull to have more decorations like your Trireme. I'm thinking a pattern on the side, something simple.

As for other meso ships I was thinking you would use the Trireme as a base, and change the hull when needed, cannons for the Galleas, and a Frigate type hull but with the Trireme's decorations(temple in back etc). As I read yesterday, the Putun(east coast offshoot of the Maya and descendants of the Olmecs as well) had sailing canoes with serpent heads. They used those for war and the ship I linked a screenshot of for trading. They apparently founded colonies in Florida, the Caribbean and Georgia. Putun kind of remind me of the Haida meets the Phoenicians with traditional Mayan thrown into the mix.

That putun boat looks like a scaled down mycenaean galley. I wanted to do that for the sea people, but just converted the civ 5 trireme.

Yeah its convergent development. Putin Sailing Canoes looked like that(but with one sail per the picture). They also had HUGE standard canoes, 60 feet long, as well as serpent headed sailing warships, used for raiding(Which they then would trade to others). Sort of a cross between Viking raiding and Phoenician trading.

Civ5 Trireme a good fit. The ship is smaller than the Civ4 Trireme, so it is faster, lethal, but also capable of carrying a deadly ground of raiders. A good choice.

Now imagine doing that for a universe with established lore and having to figure out which civ would use cannons at which point in the game vs magic effects and which magic effects. One simply does not appreciate the gravity of this stuff until one is too deep in to quit.

Why are the archers green? Is that team color or standard?
Team color. There is another (original) version of the texture that is blue. You could use that one if you prefer.

I never gotten into the magic, trolls, elves thing. I guess my suspension of disbelief ends at magic.
Of course the force and Jedi aren't real either. :scan:

I think it's okay... As long as they are not Babylonian

Currently contemplating Philistines I have thought of the following. Like many civilizations which faded which already exist in Civ, I must try to imagine what post-Ancient units would look like. I would imagine that as an Aegean people they would eventually come under Greek influence with trade. Being near Mesopotamia, they would also fall under influence from there as well. So imagine the units would reflect this more, while keeping a Philistine feel. I will think of something for my civ.

As for the leaderhead? Any suggestions? Who would be a good base.

The question though is if this is the right approach to take. Should we not instead try and use what we know of their appearance and attempt to extrapolate how they would have developed naturally? There is a case to be made for both approaches.

I agree with you. I have units with heaver armor for Middle Ages, with some Canaanite looking stuff for Chariot and Horse Archers. I can see the Philistines adopting the Companion Cavalry, light ancient cavalry. Probably with the rider looking like Spearman1 of Toad's collection and armed with the same spear, only on horseback. I imagine a Pikeman being a cross between the Philistine Spearman and Sherdan. Philistine helmut, but with horns as well, convergence. Also with nice glossy silver armor, maybe with some gold. Longbowman could reuse that look, but with different armaments' of coarse. Then you would have light cavalry(medeval) and heavy(knight). medieval light cavalry would reuse the pikeman, the horse would have some basic, silver armor. The Knight would be the Philistine, but with a Dagon(the fish god they worshiped bronze helmut). The unit would have bronze colored armor, and a heavily decorated horse, with Dagon images or fish. Musketman would resemble the lighter spearman or swordsman in Toad's collection. Maybe bronze and gold clothing. Just because he already did it, Why not use the Arquibusier animations and such Toad.

Cuirassier, can either be a mounted gun user or a more advanced knight. I'd say both could be may. Heavier Knight Cuirassier I imagine like the Polish Hussar. Instead of Wings though, i imagine two fin like objects, bronze in coloration. Armor would look like the Knight's. Maybe some color changes.

Maceman would be a golden armored Sherdan type, with a one handed mace, and a shield with Dagon imagery. You could also have a Medieval swordsman, Peleset style helmut, gold armor, sword and same kind of shield.

Just some ideas. Up to Renaissance.

I finished a working Philistine civ. I will be posting leaderheads I've made but had yet to upload soon.
