Good, you've passed step 1. Some people like to pretend to think they know what they're doing.

I tried loading a guided tutorial but I couldn't get the screen to fit properly. So I think I'm just gonna wing it and see how long before I manage to kill my dwarfs.

Most guided tutorials are bad and/or confusing, but I do recommend captain duck's one (even if it is for an old version).

Mind you, I haven't played DF that much though recently I've been trying to destroy an extremely succesful fortress of mine which seemed to be an impossible task... Unable to dig to the Super Fun Stuff, easily fending off goblin sieges, food and booze to last for ages...the place practically runs itself. Well enough with that dullness! Let's hope this LP provides some more excitement.

Also, is that Boatmurdered fanart in the OP? It is isn't it? Good ol' elephants and lava flows.

*cough* Yeeeaaaah a real veteran alright I've maybe made 3 or so fortresses myself, that one succeeded spectaculary for some odd reason. It was actually my first fortress in the newest version of the game so I'm kinda happy it turned out being all peaceful. Helped me figure out the new military system and all that.

Oh and I've been reading the Syrupleaf LP, and please, someone, make some fan-art of the Spawn of Holistic:

They come bearing no weapons, for their useless regrown claws of hands could never hold anything meaningful. They come without clothes or armor. But imagine the fear that they must have struck in our look-out. Imagine seeing the 16 or so creatures, with their mottled gray, hairless, naked, twisted flesh. Their massive, slobbering maws where once was a mouth, taking up the entire space where a normal dwarf's face would be. Their eyes and nose, pushed bizarrely to the sides of their freakish head. But their mouth, oh Atith their mouth. They have no chin nor true beard, though long, spindly hairs grow both within and outside of the gaping hole in their head. Teeth line the gullet, growing first deep in the throat and covering the entire inside of the mouth, with several exposed through what remains of the monster's lips.

Edit: I was just thinking, despite my fortress doing well my military never had really high weapon and armour skills despite them training during about 80% of the year. 'sup with that?

Oh wait, you're supposed to *train* your military? Maybe that's why mine always die...

Yeah, like the rest of DF, the military system is not user friendly. Only recently (late last year) I figured out you could set training schedules. Yeaaaah.

On purpose or accidentally?

one of each. I accidently killed all my dwarfs by mining into an aquifer and didn't understand that it would create an unlimited amount of water. Much fun was to be had. I've also drowned them all on purpose after some miasma caused a tantrum spiral. That'll teach them.

I'd love to put my hand up, but DF is an evil evil timesink I can't afford right now - so I'll have to limit myself to moral support, I'm afraid.
The first bit of moral support is that your embark site seems to be pretty much the most perfect site I've ever seen - which, DF being DF, almost certainly means that everyone will be drowning/getting roasted alive in magma/choking on miasma/going on insane rampages within the year

And it's a shame the new version isn't out in time - amongst all the pointless adventure mode stuff he's been working on (does anyone play adventure mode?), he's also been developing code for starting a new industry of colonies of deadly, deadly bees. I think it should be obvious to anyone who's played DF exactly how that's all going to end

I know, it's scary.

It's also entirely flat for whatever reason. I think. I don't remember it that well, to be honest, as I haven't touched the save since the weekend. You're right about it being a timesink. I have enough of those *cough CFC cough* as it is, so I tend to avoid playing it and other video games during the week.
