Minedcrafts - a Dwarf Fortress Succession Game!

I can be a miner if you need a name. I'm good at it. I just dug into a water-pocket and almost flooded my current fortress. I've moved everything but the farms up to the next z-level just for safety.

It's because I needed a way to water my farms, dammit! I fear I may have to flood the entire thing again once I've harvested the crops...

Before I nickname anyone but me and the next 5 players, would anyone care to be a dwarf (as in, the one other guy, and whatever migrants that come)

Oh boy, would I!

I wouldn't except any kind of priority not being a player, but should your successful fortress reach a couple hundred dwarves and you run out of names then I'd be interested. :)

Golly gee willikers!

100 named dwarves?

18 people posted in this thread. I hardly think we'll get 100 named dwarves.

In other games I've read, the players get re-dwarfed upon death, so I assumed some of the names would be recycled.

I was also exaggerating a bit about your pop count - you're doomed I tell you, doomed.

I know. I just know when the military gets set up, they're gonna kill some random animal, chase after a carp in the lake, and pull an hero.

Check the wiki. It's pretty easy, all you need is 4 rocks. I'll demonstrate in summer if you're still confused.

Berueeu! EIEMAAL! Lemfeeaefg! LA LA LA Urist HA!

Ugg… my head. Damn, that was some party we had last night. I freaking love new year’s. Wait, where the hell am I?
9ptCk.png

Minedcrafts? Who the Urist came up with that name? It’s sounds Dwarven… but not at the same time…
CRFBJ.png

And how in the name of Armok did we get a wagon onto this peninsula!?

Well, might as well look around…
WIntg.jpg

So… a river emptying into a giant lake. Whose idea was this again? King Dorenneth? Uh, what an excellent idea this is!

Anyway, might as well get started pissing off the elves. I order woot7 to start on that, and get Diamondeye and Luckymoose to start digging down. This place is so sodding flat. I was told there were at least hills here. Ah well, at least this gives me an excuse to try out that tower I’ve always wanted to build. And since some idiot appointed me overseer, I guess I get to build it! Assuming I don’t run this colony into the ground.

Ah, excellent! We have everything we need to make steel! I guess this place won’t be so bad after all. I suppose I better get the miners to carve out a workshop area.

Oh, and some farms. A bedroom probably wouldn’t be a bad idea, either.

The bedroom was mined out, and I ordered the beds I had made be put there. However, those idiots took their sweet time, and I was forced to sleep in the wagon.

Things are going along quite well, I’ve even sculpted a statue to Domas Rockpriced as a token of thanks to our good fortune regarding the huge potential for wealth we have under the surface.

It just occurred to me that we don’t have a place to make more booze! We have GOT to change that. I’m ordering a new kitchen area.

Finally! The farms are ready to be flooded! I flip the switch…
zZM8Y.jpg

… and the main gate doesn’t open. Some idiot connected the bottom AND the main lever to the bottom gate! If only we had a hammerer…
I’ve corrected the issue, and we should have fully functioning farms next month.

So ends Spring. All in all, a very boring update, but what do you expect from the first spring?

Yeah.

I'd do more, but I'm sick and don't feel like it.

Looks promising, though having all our vital things so close to the ocean looks ripe for disaster. How can you see what a statue is of?

It's not an ocean, it's a freshwater lake. All of the food and furnitue is inside, so basically the wagon only contains the currently useless cave spider silk thread.

There's supposed to be an aquifer in the lake's biome, which is different from the one I dig down in. In fact, I think the lake's aquifer is on the same level as the lake. Note to everyone: don't dig directly upwards under the lake unless the above layer is stone.

You've already done plenty of things I have no idea how to. I am currently trying to make my floodgates work, but they need levers, which need mechanism-thingies, which I have no idea about and I am going to look them up on the wiki now...

Also; I usually give every dwarf a seperate bedchamber. Is that too luxurious?

I have the impression that you've made an enormeous farming area... Is that to preserve some mud for later?

You need a mechanic and a mechanic's workshop to build mechanisms. Levers are in traps. You hook levers to objects by queeing stuff up.

Not really, but I normally do that in the second year.

It's 5 7x7 plots, which really isn't much (I'm going to add 2 more) And I don't need to preserve mud because it's permanent.

Awwww I didn't make it in the player list? And here I was guessing you had trouble finding players :P

Ah well, reading along will have to do. There better be some good ol' fashioned murder going on. Also, awesome name there, Minedcrafts, especially as I just got into Minecraft.
Not really, but I normally do that in the second year.
Really? I'd never bother with that. I just make an awesome communal bedroom and they're always happy with that. Plus, when your fortress goes into the 20+ dwarves, making all those separate bedrooms and all the furniture is just a pain in the ass.

I had no idea mud was permanent... That helps a lot! I would be running out of lakes otherwise :p

Just flooded some new farms with help from my three floodgates, levers and all. I might even know how to play the game once it comes around to me

I am being assaulted by skeletal goats since I live near some cursed area... How do I make my civilians fight? :(

Whoa, you must have some hungry/thirsty dwarves, cos that's a lot of farms!
It's a bit hard to tell from the screenies, but are all your levels coming from the same staircase right up to the surface? That kind of seems to be asking for trouble :p

Separate bedrooms (even just 2x2 ones) are great, your dudes love them. That nice marble layer would be perfect for a bedroom level, since dwarves go ape over marble. You can use all the rubble to make nice marble furniture too. They're not too much of a pain if you just assign a manager to build all the stuff.

Also worth mentioning to anyone here who doesn't know about it is Dwarf Therapist, which is the best DF utility ever. Approximately a billion times easier to organise your dwarves.

Also yes please I would love to be some poor schmuck Urist!

Derp, forgot to put you down. Fixing now.

Certain dwarves get pissed if you don't assign them a room. But it's not like your legendary mason has anything better to do than make a billion cabinets.

Don't settle in scary places until you know how the game really works.

Read the article on military, but here's the gist if you just want the dwarf to stop running for its life and fight: go to military screen, create new squad without a uniform, appoint the fleeing dwarf as squad leader, go to squads, get the new 1-dwarf squad to attack whatever you want it to, and laugh when they die.

Whoa, you must have some hungry/thirsty dwarves, cos that's a lot of farms!

No, I just plan on having more than 7 dwarves :p

And for the record, there is never such a thing as too much booze.

It's a bit hard to tell from the screenies, but are all your levels coming from the same staircase right up to the surface? That kind of seems to be asking for trouble :p

There's one 2x2 stair that goes about 10z levels down. That's about as I usually make it go before starting a 1x1 stair in a different place.

I didn't actually settle in a scary place, though, I just settled too close to a scary place and they're dabbling over into my lands.

And it's okay if a couple of the guys die, I have a Thresher too much, etc...
