NESLife attempt #3

I have 150 euros plus some coins (Maybe 175ish euros) and I'm not even European! ;)

Anyways, this seems way too advanced for me to join without having serious disadvantages.

hey take me for example, my first time i thought 'hey this looks kind of boring because i don't think i'll do very good' but i decided to give it a shot and look what happened? I did very good so if i can do it anybody can do it. (not trying to gloat cuz i know i've been talking about my success alot but just trying to prove to them new people can do good)

Hmmm, is your species the one taht hrows on the volcanoes? Eras are named after the species with the most fossils found iirc. It might be that it was named after your species because when the volcanoes erupt they trap loads of them and keep them all preserved in one piece - so loads of fossils :p.

Also, daft is there a limit to the number of genes you can have? I know the more genes you have the more they have to eat, but is there actually an upper limit to the number of genes a single species can have?

Also I remember reading it somewhere but can't find it now. Is there a limit to how much you can increase a particular gene by per era. So if I wanted my Kakliea to swim well, could I only give them swimming x1 in that era? Or could I give 2, 3, or 4 if I had a bonus?

Think no more than x2 in one gene, otherwise its too distinct change...

There is no limit to total genes

About the update, still some days away im afraid. Im having lots of PC issues eating my free time. I almost wish I didn't get a new computer :)

Theres no real limit, but anything at level 10 is just about perfected. It would only help to go above that if the species was in close competition with something. So its like a curve graph of benefits vs gene level, that starts to flattens out around x10, if that makes sense. That's what Ill say right now. I may change my mind about that later :)

Though, 'Brain Power' is at least one exception. Ill say that keeps getting better the more you add to it. So its like a straight line instead of a curve. If that makes sense :) I should really update the rules on the front page sometime!

I did say at one point that I was limiting it to no more than a +2 increase for any single gene in one turn, to prevent too big a leap. I never added that rule to the front page either. Im not sure whether to have this as a strict rule, or just wait and see what happens. Its not been an issue so far.

Yeah, some things are diminishing returns, even as they get exponentially more powerful. For example, a deadly-toxic animal getting even more toxic only kills other animals slightly faster, even if its poisons are twice as potent.

also organisms can lose genes to help even 'em out and they get replaced so over time they become a completely different genus of animals or plants or w/e and then even more different. I think its fun to take away some genes and replace 'em with similar ones but still different and then over time see what i can do with the others (only been around for 2 or 3 updates though xP)

So genes strength is pretty much a logarithmic growth, the larger the number the slower the growth... Except for Brain power that grows in a normal straight line...

A Brief Interlude with The Karakvalion Hunter

G’day! It took quite the long trip to get here, but now we can find exactly the creature we’re looking for.

Look! Up by that Tranel! Let’s climb up and have a see...

Crikey! It’s a Floryte. I thought that this one would be a Kuaryte, or maybe even a Kryodyte. You can tell it by the shape of its head. Let’s get a closer look shall we?

Whoah! She’s a feisty one! If you’ll just look while I turn it around you can see ‘er lovely jaws. Easy there! Now, Florytes are strictly herbivorous, but this one’s still got a nasty set o’ jaws, capable of ripping the bark and leaves off any tree it comes across. Crikey, I think she thinks my hand’s a leaf. Ow! Hey, easy there!

Ah... ooh. I think I might need some bandages for that. And a tourniquet. But isn’t she such a beauty? Now, does anyone know where we could find some large, wrestle-able amphibious animals?

Well, Sir. I think I know some nice amphibious animals.

Yeah see o'r ther? There is a nice young Asmara Stalker.

They don't bite see! *pickes up* Indeed, their parents only come if they sense the usually predators... although they can adapt.

And over here are some Blood Auras... Ahhh... Look, that little one is trying to trumpet a warning! It seems we'e got 'n Genuian Early Horning Stalker Here!

And look at that! I won't call that a jaw! I call that a beak! And lets try to make it horn *Squezes legs* *Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrmo!* Ah! looks, I see the herd is comming! So take my advice... Scadadle Folks!!

Greater Porcuball: The Farow
Evolved from: Porcuball
Gene added: size x1, vibration sense x1, plant eating x1
Gene removed:
Description: it only made sense given the rapidly multiplying populations of the porcuball that the land could support larger porcuballs. The Great Porcuball not much different then its smaller cousin was almost a pefect clone except much bigger. It also honed its feeding abilities being able to find more smaller insects to eat by listening for vibrations in the ground and its ability to eat plants improved with more teeth designed for grinding.

OCC: Since my other two lines are still around I will continue to capitalize on my success with this little guy.

Daft, its been ages.

Yes it has. Currently I'm trying to hunt down some free time with a high power rifle...

Actually I've been working on some drawings for this just a few minutes ago. I will update eventually. 2 weeks is not abandonment by my standards. You can start to worry if it gets to 6 months or more :)

When will you allow magical genes/creatures? (phenixes) just kidding. I mean it would be cool, looking at erez's avatar. And it could be in a vranch thread.

I don't believe that Daftpanzer has the time to make a branch thread of this NES. And besides, everything in this NES has been scientifically justifiable up until now, I see no reason for that to change now.

While this is certainly true, there is no scientific reason why an animal cannot breathe fire, it would just be a very unlikely occurrence. In similar ways, there are many other so-called "magical" traits that can be explained scientifically, although certainly not the more fantastic ones, like the Phoenixes death/rebirth cycle and such. :p

The real question here is whether or not Daft will allow things that are very unlikely, as these are. I would hope he would, if there was a good reason for them to be evolutionarily advantageous. It would make the game more interesting if there were situations where a fire-breathing bird might do better than a normal bird with a faster flying speed and more powerful beak. ;)

lets go for very very unlikely, to the point of being impossible ;)

An animal that breathes fire would not be evolutionarily advantageous, because there are much more effective ways to kill prey- not to mention the inherent dangers of all the fire around an animal. It would have to be very heat-resistant and coated with some form of natural fire retardant. And think of the middle steps. Would an animal that makes tiny gouts of flame (possibly through a dry friction organ and a source of combustible gas) be evolutionarily advantageous?
