So you want 5000+ gold in 1900? That's way too much.

I think it's fine.

G
Same here. While 1000 gold is not a lot later on - WLTKD is much better in the lategame (even without Synagogues, yeah). Though, last time i played what really felt underwhelming was Merchant Specialists. I recall having maybe 1 Great Merchant for the whole game despite plaing Tradition. They were just useless

I'd be ok with that. 5000 gold in Atomic era isn't too much, considering the costs of purchasing&upgrading units.

Finally, after many hours of playing (this game take a long time to complete!) I'm done with my first game on this patch; it ifeels great and as a huge leap forwards. I'm not sure what to criticize (perhaps I need to play more). I didn't have any happiness problems at all - except one sudden drop somewhere which I forgot to bother about.

The "end game" is really stressful as always in vox populi. There's a fight to the bitter end against the AI's and I never seem to win any landslide victories (If I don't go conquest, which I almost never do). I mean, I won by a couple of turns or something like that and it was very uncertain if I'd make it or not since the Netherlands had one or two parts left to complete on their spaceship (they got the final 82 techs as can be seen in the picture. I got one turn left on the citizen earth protocol as can be seen as well).

I really like late game in vox populi, and that's cool because before this mod I'd almost never play the later eras, and that has been a pattern since I started playing the civilization series back in 1991! The game was usually over by then, or I grew borded and tired of it. But late game in vox populi is really interesting, emotionally tense and a great deal of fun! It doesn't feel like a long drag at all, quite the opposite. So thank you Gazebo et al. for giving me this experience.

@pineappledan how on earth did you manage to get your Indian captial to size 46 at 1832 (I think it was?).That must of been a record or something. What policies/beliefs made it possible? I mean my capital is 48 and that in 1950!

Glad you had fun.

"No happiness problems" = happiness was never an issue, or you never felt frustrated by unhappiness? Former is not great, latter is what I hope.

198 happiness is pretty high...

Happiness was only an issue in the begining when I had my capital produce 6 settlers before I had it to do anything else. Then with seven undeveloped cities happiness was down at -13 for a while. But after that, I slowly began to grow and it "was never an issue" again. Never, not even in the screenshot showing this "sewer" of a city - all the luxuries [many] I had on my own, through trade and city-alliances seemed to have carried me throughout the game. Perhaps I'm now willing to say that I was "bathing in happiness", but I have to play a little more to get a better understanding of it.

First time ever I've seen a city state pathfinder. This beta. It was killed in a barbarian invasion. City state could not defend with just a warrior and a pathfinder.

Yeah I've seen city states pathfinders move around, IIRC in the prior beta as well. I think it's kinda cool that the city states have diverse armies, as long as they don't rely on them.
I'm liking the new beta. I do have a concern about the default city citizen AI - it prioritises specialists more than I think it really should be doing, so by the early mid-game distress rises, since food tiles aren't being worked, and in tandem with urbanisation unhappiness, it's a double whammy. Locking good terrain tiles works though.

How so? You can reach like 30k culture or science with a single Great Scientist or Great Writer, while those yields are much more valuable anyway. 5k gold is equivalent of conquering a city with completed Authority, it works even with CSs IIRC. 1k gold is really just about 1 investment in late game building or about 1 upgrade of late game unit. How can 5k gold late game be too much from a Great Person focused on gold?
To keep it consistent, I would see it as formula: goldGainFromGreatMerchantBulb = (8 + numberOfTowns) * totalIncome * constant.

But you don't just get gold, you get WLTKD as well.

True, but still 1k gold late game is negligible. That's why I put a constant in that equation, which could in range of 0.2 - 0.5, so WLTKD is included in overall Great Merchant bulbing strength.

It should be noted that GP is a locked topic for Gold. No more changes to it!

Relax.
I guess it would be helpful to make a separate list for Platinum which contains things to balance after Gold.
If GP are locked for Gold, which is fine by me, I would see it on that Platinum list.

I'll reiterate that I think the Great Merchant is fine. The biggest perk you gain is the WLTKD buff - if you don't feel that WLTKD is beneficial enough to you, it's because you've ignored (rightly or wrongly) WLTKD-buffing bonuses in the game. At which point yes, the GM is not as strong as it could be for you. But that's the same as saying Golden Ages are weak because you aren't pursuing a GA strategy. Etc. etc.

GA improve a lot of yields. It increases gold, production and culture. Always needed. While growth is..... well.. if you set your city to no growth, for what reasen every.... your WLTKD is useless.

You are arguing from bad faith. Re read the very passage you quoted.
