New national flag adopted in Iraq

@PP :

What you say is funny cause the two first flags are jokes and the last one is the only serious. Anyway, my point was to try to improve a bit the ugly shape of the official one.

I still consider that as weird to have the flag of an arabic nation sharing the same colours as those of the Israelian flag... with the two same horizontal blue strips also...

This.

Yeah, they look kinda Dutch ;)

If the Iraqi people are happy with their new flag then that's cool. Who are we to discuss it? I mean, look at the USA - that flag is ghastly and reminds me of pirate's trousers, but whatever keeps them happy

Well, I guess the guys who've chosen the design were Iraqis, but still, I don't find it very beautiful. Maybe it would have been better this way :

What do you think ? :undecide:

this looks much better

Anyone notice similarities in these?

It's called Pan-Arabism

Red, Black, Green, and Gold are traditionally held as the four noble colors by the Arabs.

Egypt, Syria, Iraq and Yemen flags have been created by the Nasserian nationalists who were looking for the unification of the Arab world, no wonder they've agreed on the flags then.

As you may notice, Jordan and Kuwait has added the green color of the Islam which doesn't figure in "nationalist" flags... indeed, the nationalists promoted laicity at the beginning when monarchies were still counting on Islam as a tool for their legitimacy.

I think the flags' similarity also shows lack of imagination. Europe is also trying to unify, but does every country have the same colors or shapes in their flag? No. And I even left some other similar flags away.

Iraq's Governing Council has adopted a new national flag to replace the one flown by former president Saddam Hussein, with emblems to represent peace, Islam and Iraq's Kurdish population, spokesperson Hamid al-Kefaae said on Monday.

We can see on it 3 red strips representing the three main groups living in the country and they are separated with 2 white strips representing peace. On the top left, we can see a white crescent on a blue square representing the spirit of Unity of the country and the place of Islam in its culture.

I knew that looked familiar.

"Allah Akbar" was added to the flag after the 1991 war. Prior to that, the Iraqi flag was just like Syria's with an extra star.

The new flag looks like a concrete-walled side of a low-rent warehouse building.

Well honnestly speaking, we can't consider European flags to be that imaginative. Moreover, we should take into account the artificial nature of the Arabic countries which don't have any really independant History.

To be honest, I preferred Marla's first one, but then again I dislike "pan......" anything flags.

I'm guessing the new flag will have a relatively short lifespan. (just as well, since its ugly) The flag will probably become another symbol of occupation, and at whatever point the Americans leave, Iraqis will replace it with something else.

Yes, it's way to early to make these kind of decisions. Changing flag could have been a good first time experience of a proper referendum, now the Iraqi people probably thinks the decision is made by the coalition.
