New NESes, ideas, development, etc

Yes I was referring to IoT.

The reason I'm saying this is I think it would be sad for NES forum to dwindle away to nothing. Take a look around - most of the recently active NESes are in the process of moving off-site. It only took a few mods leaving to take most of the community with them. I think that says alot about the dwindling fortunes here over the past few years.

If you don't see a problem then cool :)

But, *if* it gets to that stage please, lets not let sentimentality get in the way of what's best for the hobby. IoT is basically running NESes at this point. I'd much rather know that NES lives on through IoT here, than it becomes a sad ghost town.

Point taken, but I'm still more inclined to start one here to see how it goes. No need to preemptively take action, and thus perpetuating the "dwindling away" of the forum. If there aren't enough players to make a fun game, then I'll consider alternatives.

EDIT: and to echo what I said in #nes, I wouldn't be surprised to see a small influx of new players when the new Civ is launched...it's been a while since Civ5.

Sounds interesting enough.

So with the sad moving of the currently most important, most successful, probably largest and most dedicated NES we ever had (EoE to those we really need me to spell it), and quite a few of very dedicated NESers and MODers, there's a need for new games.

So seeing JJ is already taking on the fresh start token, I'll ask too.

Is there interested in a NES of either:
1. a fantasy oriented NES where players will both create nations (maybe races) and slowly build together the world as the game progresses.
2. a more sci-fi futuristic NES, that will most likely begin on Earth, and players will play any powerful entities that influence the world and largest parts of the story... (nations, corporations, "alien" invasions...)

erez87:

There is already a TBNES at the frontier for 1, which is exactly what you describe.

2. We don't have, but most such NESes failed in the past. Would personally love to play it though.

Maybe a NES that's about the last survivors of humanity invading an alien planet in order to create new Earth could be interesting.

Well seeing as this isn't the frontier, and I'm not part of the frontier, I think it is OK to have one here too. That is if interest exist.

Yeah I know, they mostly failed from oversize, I think, but I intend to keep it simple like a usual fresh start rule set and story-based.

Well, yes, I know that this isn't the Frontier, but it seems redundant and a little disrespectful to thomas to have almost an exact ideological copy of his NES here in civfanatics when so many NESers are also playing his NES in the Frontier.

A story based futuristic sci-fi/sci-fantasy NES sounds interesting though. Perhaps it can be about colonizing another earth-like world to explain the "fresh-start-like" quality of it?

So you are saying people who remain in CFC should feel bad about playing things that those who left are playing somewhere else? I think not.

Anywya, I do think Sci-fi would garner more interest too :p

Well, let me rephrase that and say that making two similar NESes leads to competition which leads to fewer players for both NESes and that would be probably be bad for both :p.

But yeah, I like the sci-fi/sci-fantasy idea better.

I'm not sure about space-colonial NES because that will be kind of like a fresh-start with extra technology... Also that might need more rules than I am willing to dedicate to this :p

My idea is a bit more like Iggy's old story-based space NES, just on a much smaller scale (starting with only Earth) and rather free-style rules.

I like the fantasy one a lot. Wouldn't mind playing one of those.

2. a more sci-fi futuristic NES, that will most likely begin on Earth, and players will play any powerful entities that influence the world and largest parts of the story... (nations, corporations, "alien" invasions...)

I'd be interested in an "alien invasion NES" specifically, though I'd wait and see about a world-sci-fi NES.

I was thinking of a somewhat crazy idea for a NES...

It would be set on Earth, and I would let you guys decide when it could be set and stuff, as long as it's pre-Space Age. The basic premise is that it would be Earth, except that aliens would be interfering with it. It would run like a normal NES, but the twist is that every (other?) turn, I would roll a d20, and something crazy would happen depending on what I rolled. Some things could include:

Chaos Deck:
Spoiler :

Rolled on a d20:
1. Homecoming- The aliens have to go home for a turn and nothing happens.
2. Climatology class- A sudden ice age strikes either a portion of the world or the entire world.
3. Environmentalism class- Sudden global warming occurs.
4. Wrath of Fbthlp- A random active army is annihilated on the spot.
5. Mass displacement- Two random civilizations' locations are swapped.
6. Monster playground- Some big alien monster is dropped onto earth.
7. Darwinian Biology class- Multiple smaller alien monsters capable of mating are dropped onto a region of earth.
8. Domestication Class- Multiple animals capable of mating and domestication are dropped onto a region of earth.
9. Time capsule- One random civilization is given a super-futuristic weapon or technology.
10. Earth science class- A natural disaster of a large scale occurs at a random place on the world.
11. Health Class- A random alien disease that humans don't resist is placed in a random country.
12. Medicine Class- A cure to a human disease that humans don't know how to cure is placed in a random country.
13. I get to make something up on the spot. Trust me, you don't want me to roll this.
14. Tectonics- Some crazy tectonic plate movement happens somewhere. Bad stuff happens to the people on the fault lines!
15. Rapid Baconization- Part of a PC nation or possibly all of an NPC nation is turned into pigs.
16. Throwing rocks- A hellish meteor shower occurs somewhere in the world.
17. Bad luck for Italian Bureaucracy- Aliens practice primitive mind control devices. The world economy skyrockets from the increase of productivity.
18. Arrow to the knee- A gigantic space missile is fired into a random country.
19. Physics class- Earth gets pushed way out of orbit for a short duration of time. The impact will be huge, believe me...
20. All hell breaks loose- 3 rerolls (rerolling on 1s and 20s).

What do you guys think?

I'm still not sure which website I will host it on. Depends on where more interest is showed.
