New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

Hey I am back, but since Ralph won't have his report up till thursday, I won't be able to play before I leave again for my West Coast business trip.

Liq, I hope you recover quickly

Frankcor, way to step up!

Well as I had abandoned you on holiday decided I would do the quiet builder turns as punishment.

We are in great shape as I start :goodjob: having taken what we needed from Pericles and ahveing a nice tech position…

Despite it looking like our economy was in trouble once we take peacxe (so don’t need the culture slider) we can run 305 which might seem low but is generating a lot of beakers (its not the % that matters but the :science: that % creates).

So anyway.

percilesvassal.jpg

Took Music as seemed better than theology but both of trivial techs really.

With chemistry in we went Steam – Steel which is mostly finished.

I built the FP in Carthage. It doenst help us much here with Pericles’s cities but this city had the production to build it quickly and it is perfectly positioned to reduce any economic hit as we assimilate Hammy next trunset.

carthagefp.jpg

We got a highly irrelevant quest

ignorerandevent.jpg

Amnd meantime I built the next player some toys.

In the south for the starter we have
southernarmy.jpg

More troops going to join this stack which is a bit light at the moment.

In the west for a big push after Hammy’s nice cities we have

westernarmy.jpg

and in the NW (which could be split in two we have)

nwarmy.jpg

If we stick on military in a few key cities we can easily crush Hammy so we may want to start assembling a navy for Phase 2 soon.

Couldn’t think of a use for our Great Engineer so…
As I forgot to switch civics to Free Speech (which would be worthwhile) if all else fails he can go on a GA…

Enjoy the start of the mop up phase, although we have a way to go for domination the game should be in the bag..

waytogofordom.jpg

Suggest people play long sets if they desire as it will help us not get bored in the end game

Scrubkai,

Are you able to take this ??

:bump:

Ralph

Sorry all... No post today.
We had a nasty storm last night and the power was out for 10 hours...
Hard to play the game with no power. I'll try again tonight.

Theme for this Turn:
Ask not what your Golden Age can do for you;
ask what your Golden Age can do to Hammy.
:hammer:

Once again Kai was awoken to the sound of the Senate calling his name.
As he ascended to the throne he surveyed the empire before him.
Everything was generally running well, only a couple minor worker tweaks were needed to push a little more gold out of the land.

The empire's resources for both war and infrastructure were vastly improved over the last time he checked, so he asked the Senate to pass a resolution of thanks for Ralph and Frank's excellent work. :goodjob:

With that done, he finished the job of gathering the armies of the South.
As he waited for for the runner to report all legions were in place, Pericles came offering a trade of Fish for Stone. Kai considered helping out his vassal, but decided against it at this exact moment.
(Side Note: I don't normally ever pick up vassals, so do you guys normally help them out with trades of tech or extra resources:confused:)

The next morning the runner finally arrived. He carried both the news that the all legions were in place, as well as the news of a new great scientist that had appeared in Rome.
Kai thought long and hard about how to use this new scientist, and in the end he asked him to spread his knowledge freely among the people, and to help that he decreed that the government shall no longer control the media. The people responded with great rejoicing and many new entertaining forms of the written, spoken and sung word were produced.
GoldenStart.jpg

With this great rejoicing, and flush with the new cash to support the war, Kai gave the nod to his military advisers, and the quest to unify the homeland under the rightful Roman rule was begun.

The fruits of this effort were quickly realized as our initial push into Hammy's territory netted two workers. These gains were quickly followed up by the capture of Ellasar by the northern army.

Civ4ScreenShot0063.jpg

The southern army soon met with equal success as Erench was captured and promptly razed.

As Kai perused the battle reports, Elizabeth asked respectfully for Kai's attention. Her honeyed word made Kai listen, but her offer of Divine Right and gold for Liberialism did not match her oratory skills. Kai kindly asked her to leave.
She left only to be replaced by Gandhi. His Indians had been busy researching in this time and he offered Kai Military Science in return for steam power. Again Kai considered but ultimately turned this trade down.

As Kai turned back to his reports Gilgamesh's stormed into Kai's throne room demanding that we cancel our deals with Elizabeth. Kai (never one to take demands lightly) sent him packing.

Finally placed within the stack of military reports for Kai to review was a small note that the Roman Wise Men had discovered the secret to Steel. Also included were plans for a new weapon to replace the Catapults. Kai quickly directed Cumae to produce working copies of these cannons for use in the upcoming battles.

On the battle field Hammy focused his defense on his central front. As such the Western Army ran into heavy resistance as Hammy continually reinforced Borsippa.

As the battle continued to stalemate in the center the northern and southern prongs of the attack healed and then continued to advance.

Civ4ScreenShot0061.jpg

In the southern army split and struck first capturing Kutha. As the result of this battle a new great general was born in Rome. As the general presented himself before Kai, the roman Wise Men came into the room speaking about how the war experience could be reviewed and learned from with their new discipline called "Military Science". Kai considered this possibility and then directed the Great General to establish a Military Academy to do just that in Cumae.

Soon after they left A report came from the northern front.
Civ4ScreenShot0065.jpg

Shushan had fallen to the northern army. Losses from all combat on the northern and southern front had so far been minimal.

This was not so on the Central Front. Hammy had managed to reinforce Borsippa so well that most of that armies siege weapons had been destroyed, and even the legions of riflemen had been badly wounded. As the riflemen healed under the watchful eye of our super warlord pikeman medic, Kai directed the emipre's reinforcements to the western front. This set of reinforcements included two units of the new cannons the military was very excited about.

As reinforcements gathered Hammy attempted to counterattack. Kai watched this, and through the use of a couple highly dug in Riflemen units encouraged the assault to happen at Haderum. Hammy took that bait and attacked across the river.

Civ4ScreenShot0058.jpg

The results were not pretty for him. As all the reinforcements for the western front had gathered in Haderum. ;) His counter attack force was destroyed without any lasting cost to the Roman empire.

These after a single night of rest these reinforcements then headed to the central front and the battle for Borsippa was joined.
As Kai waited for the news of the battle, The wise men reported again that they had discovered the secrets of something called a Corporation. This resulted in the loss of some trade via the Great lighthouse, but not all that much as The Roman empire now included a number of landlocked cities which got new trade routs. Kai then directed the Wise men to think about a way to increase production. (Assembly Line)

Civ4ScreenShot0062.jpg

The new cannons made the battle for Borsippabattle much easier, the city soon fell to the central army. As the army settled in to heal, the northern and southern armies arrived at their next targets.

As Kai directed the senate to summon Frank, the messengers with more details from the northern and southern front.

Civ4ScreenShot0066.jpg

In the north Esnum was captured.

While in the South:
Civ4ScreenShot0060.jpg

Mari fell to the victorious Southern Army.

So that's were I ended. I took a long turn, but I think that was the plan.
Six cities captured, and one razed. Hammy has six cities left on the main landmass. All three of the armies are bloodied but given a couple turns of healing, they should be fully healed and ready to assault the next batch of cities.
(I believe I took out the brunt of his army, So hopefully Frank the next few cities should be easy to take)

A few items of note:
1) I have not done all that much to get ready for our assault across the sea. Rome now has a drydock, but I have not produced any new ships.
2) Hammy has an outpost up near the Greeks, and a number of Frigates. So we may need to bump up our Navy before we finish him off.
3) I still have not used the great engineer. He just seems too valuable to use on a golden age. I was thinking maybe he might be used either to found a Corp (if we wanted to do that) OR we could use him to produce the Pentagon quickly.
4) One other thing we should be aware of. Pacal II is very close to spreading his religion to all the different nations. Attached below is the vote for the Apostolic Palace.
Civ4ScreenShot0007-1.jpg

I think once that happens, he only needs 420 votes to win a diplomatic victory. So as you can see if a few people join him, he may possibly have enough votes to win a diplomatic victory. I'm not all that worried right now, but It's something to think about when we go across the pond and start making enemies.
5) Frank be sure you check all the cities to see where they are working tiles. I haven't done so since the golden age ended, so the tiles may not be working quite as efficiently as they should be. (Bad Kai.... got wrapped up in the war.)

That's it at this point.
Hopefully Frank you have half as much fun on your turns as I did beating up on Hammy.

Great report, as always, scrubkai! I hear the Senate's summons and I've got the save. I will be playing this weekend. Look for a report late Saturday.

I concur that the Pentagon is a great use for the Great Engineer. Building it in Cumae will take our HE city off-line for more than a few turns but the payoff will be huge. We'll have to build military in our other cities to keep the assault in the west going.

Maybe a couple of Ironclads can handle Hammy's frigates up north? I'll see what the former Greek cities can pump out for us. And I'll be sure to check tile and specialist assignments.

Before starting the first turn, I checked our cities. The biggest problem I saw was unhappiness in many cities, mostly as a result of city size with War Weariness, Homeland and even some Emancipation unhappiness starting to creep in. We are running at 50% science with 0 culture. Most of the unhappiness can be eliminated by cranking culture to 20% but that extends the time to research Assembly Line from 8 to 11 turns. I chose instead to change build orders to happiness buildings.

I'm not happy with the prospects of that effort because many cities have no religion so the only options for happiness buildings are theaters or coliseums which require the culture slider to gain any real advantage or forges which aren't bad. I believe our best long-term solution for happiness is to spread lots of religions to all our cities. We have only a few monestaries so that's going to take some time but I believe it's our best hope. Jails don't help much with only 1 or 2 unhappy citizens per city.

Our next biggest issue is health but I think it pales in comparison to happiness and is easier to fix with buildings. I did change some tile assignments to get some cities to grow that had room in their happiness and health caps. We need to start paying more attention to our cities or their ability to wage war is going to drop dramatically without good management.

So then I had a completely different look at things and saw that our rivals on the other continent had excess resources and cash. I know we've been avoiding trading with their enemies, I thought we have little to fear of them declaring war on us and it's unlikely we're going to go for a diplomatic victory with the power curve the way it is right now. So I made the following trades.

Willum: Dye (1 of 8) for 16 gold per turn
Gandhi: Dye (1 of 7) for 7 gold per turn
Gandhi: Spices (1 of 5) for Crab
Gilgamesh: Spices (1 of 4) for Silk
Gilgamesh: Dye (1 of 6) for Incense
Gilgamesh: Gems (1 of 4) for 14 gold per turn

Bada bing! No more unhappy cities. So then I turned my attention to war.

Immediately, I was faced with a decision:
owner44.jpg

Looks like I made the right choice -- everybody else voted yes.
owner45.jpg

Fortunately, only two of our cities had Judaism religion at the time. The worst hit was Halicarnassus:
owner46.jpg

The first Babylonian city to fall under my reign was Sirpula:
owner47.jpg

Around that time, Gilgamesh offered the following deal:
owner48.jpg

I accepted the deal, then used the 400 gold to crank up research to cut the time remaining for Assembly Line. Two turns later, we started work on the Pentagon in Athens, our highest hammer city outside of Cumae:
owner49.jpg

Louis knocked 20 turns off the time to complete the Pentagon.

Back to the war, we no longer have to be concerned about Barbarians entering our territories with the capture of Akkad:
owner50.jpg

We just missed destroying two frigates with the capture of Opis but we did sink a Galleon at the docks.
owner51.jpg

Finally, Sippar fell next:
owner52.jpg

I founded Arpinium on the ruins of a Greek city within our boundaries:
owner53.jpg

We had a bit of nasty weather at Argos.
owner54.jpg

I'm not sure what we lost but there's only a Granary and a Bank still there and the city is unhappy.

Hammy has three cities remaining on the main-land. Our forces have just arrived at the gates of two of them and they will fall shortly.
owner55.jpg

We're researching Railroads now but we'll probably need Democracy soon as Emancipation anxiety increases. Have fun!

OK Got it, nice warring, will probably be wednesday before my report is up.

Ralph

Apologies for the delay, palyed last night but with the amount of time it takes to play turns was very tired so delayed reporting until today.

First. We are firmly in the period where loose MM is to be permitted so feel free to :whip: me if it isn’t right!!

Started by going through hammy like a knife through butter
capture1.jpg

capture2.jpg

Despite sinking a few frigates on the Northern coast i was wary of his navy so built our on the E coast so that’s where you will find your new toys!!
ironclads.jpg

Once he had been kicked off the mainland he was prepared to give us a useful tech (Ummm Oil) for peace so it was time to turn our attention to the “New World”.

capitulation.jpg

Always like to cash in an old tech for gold!!

cashingin.jpg

We built a nice wonder for war mongers like us
pentagon.jpg

In the meantime with Oil revealed and combustion researched (now finishing off Democracy as I don’t want to give any AI a leg up through trading ) we had destroyers and transports available. SO it would be a shame to not leave the next player with a few so enjoy

newtoys.jpg

Both Armies have super medics so will look after themselves and with Destroyers as escorts are very safe, although Transports sink frigates by themselves!!

How about saying each turn set t is to conquer an AI on the way to conquest from now on??
I don’t’ mind doing the intermediate builder sets.

Enjoy

LOL, RALPH! You kick Hammy off the continent, Vassalize him and you call it a builder set?

YAY, new toys! Your turns and report were a class act.

I do have a question. I looked all through the manuals for Civ IV, Warlords and BtS, Civilpedia and these forums, and I cannot find a single reference to The Period Where Loose MM is Permitted (TPWLMMIP). Could you post a link to where you saw that rule?

This is one of those advanced undocumented features (like forest growth can only happen vertically and horizontally not diagonally) that is not recorded in the Manuals or Civopedia

However once you have played a lot of SG's you will know when it kicks in!!!

In an idle moment maybe its worthy of a Strategy Article!!

Cheers

Ralph

Alright, I am pretty sure it's me. so, I Got it. Any thoughts? I will play this weekend and post on Monday. Would post sooner but no internet at home...

Sorry, personal/family concerns came up and I was not able to get it and my schedule won't let me play again until the weekend. Really sorry! Skip please.

No need for stress, dazedroyalty. Spending time with family is a Good Thing.

Here's my guess at the roster:
Ralph (just played)
Dazedroyalty (skip until the weekend)
Srubkai (up now)
Frankcor
Liquidated (dropped)

I would sail due East and conquer the first AI (Gandhi I think) and then set up a transport chain to ferry troops to the other continent.

Tech towards artillery perhaps but we basically have the techs we need to defeat the AI.
