New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

OK I will take this one and this makes the Roster:-

Ralph_Jackson (up)
dazedroyalty (on deck)
scrubkai
frankcor (First BTS SG)

Frankcor, next round is great for you to join in. How did you manage to leave it in your car is my only question! When I get new toys, the challenge for me is to do anything else before I start enjoying them! :)

This happens to me too.
I've learned not to pick up a new toy until after work...
Because when I get a new toy during work the rest of the day is shot thinking about the new toy....

Heh, I was inarticulate. I failed to mention I was posting from my office. It just wouldn't do to be playing Civ while working. It's a revenue thing. <g>

LOL, yeah, so true. But keeping it out of sight is absolutely required for me.

As tempting as playing at work may be, it's a definite no-no... says the man who posts his turn reports at the office.

I saw the post in the sticky thread that said you were looking for newbies that might be up to play. I just got Civ4, was an avid Civ3 SG fan and would like to try my hand at Civ4 if you're still looking for replacement players

Bob,

Just so you know, this game uses the Beyond the Sword expansion. So you have to have that as well as the basic Civ IV game.

Also, have you played any Civ IV at all, or will this be your first game?
If it's your first game... Know that the stratiges for Civ IV are very different then Civ III. (Not trying to scare you away, I'm just asking for information. I'm very much in learning mode on this thread, so far be it from me to just go off and tell someone that they can't learn with us.)

So our economy is now gradually reovering and it times to hunker down and grow (existing cities at this stage) and start our Great Library run…

I pick up Alphabet in a trade with Pericles for Aesthetics.

We finish Literature

lteraturein.jpg

I am not worried about losing the Great Library to either Hammy or Perry as we are industrious and won’t trade them Literature. I am holding back Code of Laws so as to not boost their economy and Aesthetics is more of a “dead end tech”.

This means next turn I can pick up Monarchy, Masonry and sailing from Hammurabi for Aesthetics + Alphabet. I switch to hereditary rule which means we can now very easily manage our happiness. Normally I would turn down Masonry to not make inroads on our Fear You Are Becoming too Advanced” limit but we now have certain cities with no useful buildings to create. (Antium and Cumae). As we are industrious we can usefully turn their hammers into gold by losing a wonder race. The efficiency of this is dramatically improved if you are building a wonder with its bonus so we start Statue of Zeus in Cumae (ivory)

cumaezeus.jpg

and will do the Pyramids in Antium and Masonry will let us unlock the stone bonus for the Pyramids. In the Pyramids cases we will also turn trees into gold by chopping some of its spare forests.

Research wise we start going down the Currency line to unlock Forums which are a top notch Unique Building with their +25% GPP and extra happy from Ivory for us.

In the meantime Pericles has been expanding South towards us.

And we have been exploring up the long Northern Peninsula he lives on. We find his capital has the Great Lighthouse and with all his coastal cites this will be really powering up his economy..

Other than it was pressing enter so I played 15 turns not 10

So at the end our Army of workers is busy building some Wooden Wonders

I am confident we will snag the Great Library and with two more forest chops to come we might even end up with the Pyramids!!!

Our economy is much improved

And we are keeping up with our Neighbours Tech wise

Suggestions
  1. We can now afford to found Silvertown.
  2. Once Cumae finishes Statue of Zeus we can afford for it to boost our Power rating by pumping out more Archer Garrisons (heroic epic is unlocked and can also be built in Cumae) which will also control our Happiness. Team can discuss the option of not finishing the Statue of Zeus and waiting for the cash instead
  3. Keep chopping in Great Library and Pyramids.
  4. Keep an eye on Hamm and Pericles as we have had to turn down a couple of demands (free techs and giving away Iron!!) so they are potentially a bit annoyed
  5. Next tech post currency TBD

Ralph

p.s. Bob As long as you have BTS very happy for you to join as its a learning game

How do you put/remove the little markers on the map, like our resettle marker?

ALt + S, Click on Square, and fill in the pop up text box

well if still have room checking in:).. I was given a stomach virus by my niece (she's so adorable) such that life is a bit painful currently.

Need to go over this thread in detail while my head is clear so I can just pick up after a round. Just yell to get my attention.

Wager I should feel uh human? in a day or three.

Cheers!

Ack, didn't see this was BTS - I don't have that.

Playin' some on my own, getting the hang of it. You said a mouthful, it certainly is different. If you guys see or hear of a vanilla CIV SG forming, please let me know - and good luck!

So we have a new roster:-

Ralph_Jackson
dazedroyalty (Are wonders made of wood)
scrubkai (Time to Expand or prepare for war?)
frankcor (Enjoying His First BTS SG)
Liq (Will be toasting Frankcor's first BTS SG)

Welcome aboard to the famous Liq (hic!)

Ralph

famous eh and yeah if the beer isn;t opaque what's the bloody point?

Fever is gone but as evidenced by my self-forced turnset in akk01, best to recover from that bit of viral antics. Sloppy play is fine on prince but rather not have the sg suffer that on monarch

Cheers!

I will be playing shortly and posting later this afternoon. Before we do, any thoughts about the Statue of Zeus? The only reason I ever build it is to deny it to the AI. I don't think that we will be gaining any particular advantage with it unless one of our future enemies is the one that lands it. Then that gets really annoying. On the other hand, the money could be helpful.

Civil service as research goal? Other thoughts?

:agree:

I just got done ranting about that pos wonder in another thread . One of my main complaints about BTS (which I hope is addressed officially) is War Weariness in general, SOZ in particular.

I'm in no way a warmonger (builder to a fault actually) but WW is just too effing persistent to make a long war feasible. .
Take the ill fated boffo1 as an example. Hammy had an ongoing transcontinental gunpowder war with sury and his 2 vassels for hundreds of turns, showing what maybe 90 WW total.

Silver DOW's and takes maybe 20 turns taking 3 towns and BOOM 800+ WW. 100 turns later and WW was still over 400. Now imagine if it was sury that had the soz and not hammy.....

Just a very potent wonder amplifying a WW system in need of some serious tweaking. The result is just nightmarish for the player.

Blake save us!

Cheers!

I agree. :)

Back to the game, so is that a vote for us to try to finish it as a denial to the AI?

Scrubkai, if I remember correctly, philosophy fell already so no taoism. Islam is still out there, but unfortunately isn't on the way to anything else particularly needed.

Finish the S of Z as it's close to completion and it is nice to deny it when you have spare :hammers: as we did.

No religion for us as all but Islam have fallen on the other continent(s).... but we didn't want it too easy did we... The lack of GG's being born in a distant land announcemnts (has anyone seen one?) makes me worry about some AI lovefest in a continent where they are all teching and trading away like madmen :borg:.
