New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

Hopefully gigi will check in and pick up the save. I'll give him 48. Then I'll jump in and grab it next. Definately don't want this game to get lost as I've learned quite a bit - and it seems like a semi-challenging starting position so I'm excitedto see whereit goes.

So, gigi, pick up w/n 48 or I'll take it.

Best,

John

Yes. Got it!

Will play tonight and post just after dinner. Lets get this rolling again.

I'm going to pull gigi from the lineup until he checks back in...

John you still playing? It's been 10 days since the last turns were played. We don't seem to be getting anywhere much...

John, We really need an update as hiatus like this are a real killer for SG's. please let us know how its going.

Can I suggest to the rest of the team that if we dont hear anything in the next 48 Hours we skip John and play on?

Ralph

That sounds fair to me. I'd still play if the rest of the team is interested in continuing on.

Ralph, you're up. The roster as is:

1. Butller1982 (MIA)
2. Ralph_Jackson (UP)
3. dazedroyalty (On Deck)
4. scrubkai
5. tycoonist
6. gigi_muschi

OK got it will play and report tomorrow night. Broad plan layed out previously but comments and questions welcome!

Ralph

Ok followed the plan and played though to iron working whilst doing some exploring.

Early highlights

1900BC Stonehenge BIADL
1850 BC Mysticism comes in nicely timed for us to Settle Cumae :goodjob: on MM to time research with the arrival of the settler

We start on the long road to IW and of course Praets…

In the North we find Pericles’ Border
periclesborder.jpg

Meanwhile Antium gradually gained enough Hammers into its library for a 2 pop whip and then started growing back assigning scientists as it grew. I actually put the overflow into the Axe not another WB as Antium has more food surplus than our happiness cap can handle so that with the clams + corn it can run 2 scientists at size 4 so doesn’t need an extra high food tile to work. On the other hand Barbs where appearing and we could do with some troops for fog busting et al..

hut.jpg

I am sure you are not surprised that this explorer ended up as Barb toast but as the Archer is guarding a hut it will probably still be there if we get an axe up there in time

I signed OB with Hannibal so I could scout out his land and see if he was a juicy target for an early attack.

hannibalsempire.jpg

Other than that a fair amount of pressing enter was involved! We built
1. A second worker which helped to hook up Cumae to our trade network
2. A monument in Cumae which means it will soon pop its borders which as they allow it to work the pigs will turn it into a nice unit pump. It is almost never a bad idea to have city like Cumae just pumping out units non stop at higher levels.
3. A library in the capital as with its high food it can assign scientist when needed and the 25% boost to research from the commerce due to the palace is worthwhile.
4. Built 2 more axes for fogbusting / a potential war
5. Built enough of the settler in our capital that it can now be 2 pop whipped to settle Iron if we find some nearby..
6. We meet Hammurabi who is to the W of Hannibal

SO EOT Report

Iron is in and we have some down south we can settle if we wish..
southiron.jpg

Although there are some nice city sites up the cost to the North the iron is in an uninspiring position!!

northiron.jpg

So team..

Downlaod the save and lets form a plan
A couple of options to discuss but please throw others in the ring..

a) Hunker down gradually expanding and run for the Great Library as part of a Liberalism push
b) Settle N of the Iron and pound Hannibal (note he hasn't got metals hooked up) with Axes + Swords..

Things for the team to consider are
A) How can we manage our empire with our low happy cap
B) None of the AI we have met have a religion yet - does that make a difference for our strategy
c) Still lots of room to expand
D) Is Hannibal weak or strong.

Just trying to encourage debate and learning!!

Dazedroyalty is up

Quick thoughts:

Peaceful expansion would be north as 1) the land is better and 2) there are some needed happy resources up there.

With a low happy cap, we shouldn't be afraid to make use of the whip.

A war with Hannibal would provide phants but not much else for happiness but there are tons of flood plains over that way that would be nice to control. If we keep him from connecting metal, I think we should be able to take him without too much difficulty.

Lack of religion will keep our happy cap low. I don't remember if Judaism has been founded. If not, what are the odds we'd get that?

I can play tonight but can also wait for team input until tomorrow night. If it was up to me, I'd make the move to take out Hannibal. We'd still have other neighbors to trade with, would get access to some better land, and would be removing a somewhat unstable neighbor.

That said, the Great Lib is nice too...

Edit: I will wait till tomorrow since I am about to leave internet access for the rest of the night and the team hasn't responded with any other thoughts yet.

All,
Due to being away from my gaming computer, I'm not going to be able to fire up the save and give detailed comment until late tonight...

But my initial thoughts are that we should grab the iron and go after Hannibal with our axes and Pretorians.

If we do go to war, it seems to me that we are going to need Code of Laws pretty quickly because our economy is going to take a big hit from the extra cities we decide to keep. If we shoot for that quickly we may be able to resolve our religion issue as well.

Well I am defnitely inclined to go to war.

Some observations,

Hannibals cities (all bar one) aren't on hills which makes taking him down very doable, We could probably manage it with just axes but Praets will make it a breeze.

We can monitor his potential source of copper and Iron easily as they are outside or at the edge of his empire. This means while building up our invading army we can guarantee he wont get any better defenders than Archers. (e.g If he moves a worker onto the Iron then declare and snag the worker)

As Scrubkai says if we attack him we want to take and hold his cities and that means we need to tech towards Code of Laws (note worth going the polytheism route as although slightly more expensive it opens up literature for the Great Library). With the 4 scientists we have in Rome and Antium we can still keep researching resonably even if we have to dial down the research percentage. With the high food they have we can whip the scientists to help generate a couple of Praets and they will soon grow back.

So feels like to me

a) Settler 1 N of Iron (note overlalping coastal culture will join the city up with Rome) (needs an escort)
b) whip in a couple of Praets which combined with say 4 axes will be well on the way to a credible inavsion force.
c) Watch Hannbal's resources (if he gets horses from Utica for example then a spear in the stack is very worthwhile)
d) Probably worth going max hammers at Cumae until the Pigs are pastured and cancelling the Brracks in favour of an Axeman
e) Barbs are out and about so be careful

I got a chance to look at the game in detail last night.
I agree with my inial assessment, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't take out Hannibal. He looks to have no metal or horses hooked up, so we can expect pleanty of archers vs our pretorians. So if we are quick we should have no problems with this attempt.

If we do this, my thought is we keep Carthage and the city to the north and raze the rest of the cities to try to control our upkeep.

The Report

The first thing that I noticed were that the turns were slightly off and I intended to play to an even number.... then I accidentally played one too many. So we're still off by a turn.

There was a lot of barb killing this turn:

MonarchSG1Medium.jpg

MonarchSG3Medium.jpg

MonarchSG4Medium.jpg

MonarchSG5Medium.jpg

MonarchSG6Medium.jpg

And I think I even missed a photo of one of the glorious deaths of barbarians. I did have to whip a axe in Antium at one point to prevent pillaging. I had just made a major weed move but forgetting that Antium was growing into unhappiness. So at least when the whip wears off it will be happy again.

Research wise after pottery:

MonarchSG2Medium.jpg

I decided hunting was good b/c 1) we'd might need spears eventually, 2) we'll want to hook up the deer near the iron and 3) it's on the way to archery.

We got both Hunting and Archery. At that point, I wasn't sure what the best research to start was. I debated for awhile in my mind but couldn't remember if the team had set any goals. I thought I remembered a run for the Great Lib so I tentatively selected Aesthetics, but we can change that.

I did settle Neopolis north of the Iron. I had to wait longer than I had wished because the Barbs were out and I didn't want our settler killed. Right now I actually have an axeman guarding the city. We may want to build an archer to replace him so he can go help kick Hannibal's butt.

The iron is being mined and will just need a road to make it go on line. I have not seen Hannibal make any move towards hooking up his Iron. I don't really know what he is thinking. But I won't complain.

Here's an overview:

MonarchSG7Medium.jpg

That's pretty much it except to say I am not pleased with Photobucket because I edited the pictures to remove unnecessary info, but when I copied them in, they're back to the big unedited ones. (EDIT: Now they're showing up as edited so never mind. That was weird)

Here's the save:

Ok looks like I'm up. I'll try to pick up the file tonight and have the turn posted by Sat night.

My goal will be to build up a respectable invasion force, and to start working on getting code of laws.

Any other thoughts?

That sounds perfect. Code of Laws! Of course! Don't know why I couldn't remember that. Once our current axe builds are down, we can switch to prats, as we'll have a good number of axes. Do we have a particular plan of attack? Straight to Carthage or start north and work our way down?

Here's my thoughts on the order of attack...

Carthage: Looks to be their best all around city, Has Iron in it's borders, Will probably be the best defended of all the cities, Has by far the highest culture.
Hadrum: Is their best food city (with slave that could mean can make many units), Probably has the second best culture.
Hippo: their only city on a hill, Could be attacked the turn we declare war, could turn into a decent production city if given time.
Utica: Their weakest city.

So my thought:
Pre attack: build a road in our land to Hippo
Surprise attack Hippo on the turn we declare war (This version of civ does not penalize you for moving then attacking right? If so we should be able to raze the city with minimal losses.) then march on Carthage, Hadrum and Utica in that order.

The warmth of the command tent is briefly shaken as a legionnaire slips through the flap.

"Sir, Tribunus Kai, Reporting. The Legions from all corners of the empire have been assembled, we march on your command."

The Report:

Civ4ScreenShot0005.jpg

As with the last report, we have a large number of barbarians appeared in the first few turns of this set. Rather then regale you with stories of our glorious victory, I'll just say that we smashed them all with no losses to our units. Just lots of xp for our troops :)

More on the military front later.

On the domestic front, we completed our pasture for the pigs in 925BC, and I started working that tile so Cumae could grow and produce an army faster.

In 875BC Hammarabi approached us for an open borders agreement. I declined the request, as I could see no advantage to us at this time.

We received a great scientist in Rome on in 825BC. I built and academy in Rome with that scientist to maximize our science.
A few turns later (675BC) Our monument was complete in Neapolis, and more importantly Iron was connected up.

I immediately set the empire to start to build Praetorians.
The next turn Rome and Neapolis both whipped 2 pop to rush their praetorians.

At 600BC the first of our Praetorians arrived, and a call was sent out to gather all Axemen and legions at a gathering point just out of Hannibal's sight. I also set our engineers to work building the connecting roads to quickly arrive move our army into his territory.

575BC: from the overflow that the whipping gave we generated another Axeman in Rome and workboat in Antium. The Axeman was sent to the gathering point, and the workboat jumped on the fish near Antium.

We also got some bad news this turn.
Civ4ScreenShot0006.jpg

From that point on, it was just a matter of assembling the army and putting ourselves into Position for a massive attack.

Shown below is our attack force.
Civ4ScreenShot0007.jpg

A few notes on the campaign.... I have not declared war yet; I leave that up to the next group of turns...

Here is a map of Hannibal's lands.
Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

You will note a few things.
1) I was asleep at the switch. Hannibal hooked up iron 4 turns ago, Thus the reason for the lone axeman who is up there. He should be able to raze the mine the first second turn of the war.
But we may have to face a couple of enemy axemen...
2) There is a new city for us to address. Looks new and not to well defended.
3) Yes I stripped all of our attack units from our main cities, but then all those cities are building Praetorians and should be able to whip them out soon. So I'm not too concerned that something will hit us while we are low on defense.

Anyway here is the save.
War has never been my strongest point in the game, so if anyone has any suggestions of what could have been done better I would be more then happy to listen.

Well a few comments hopefully constructive. :)

You have spotted yourself missing the mining of the Iron. This does now mean time is of the essence. As our Axe has moved this turn there is no point declaring this turn but next we should declare, move him onto the Iron and then Pillage.

Forces. We have a good sized Army so can take down Hannibal now. Hippo being on the hill will be the toughest nut to crack.

As far as his cities go I would Raze Hippo as it is in the wrong place and keep his capital and Hadrumetum definitely but consider razing others.

Research. The team seems to have an Allergy against Code of Laws!! Not sure why as at higher levels over expanding can damage your economy badly and as we assimilate Hannibal Courthouses will be useful. Confucianism hasn’t been founded yet so with the Beakers in Aesthetics we would have had a good chance of snagging it ( may well not get it now). Aesthetics is a good tech but we can’t really leverage it for quite a while unless an AI researches Alphabet and is prepared to trade it.

An Alternative to C of Laws would have been Alphabet as we could then have extracted something out of Hannibal mid war for a 1o turn phony peace treaty.

Suggestions

Suggest the next player just starts pounding Hannibal, in particular de-hook his iron and take the capital / Hadrumetum.

How about players do a dot map for discussion of how they would resettle the balance of his empire so we can discuss which cites we keep and which we raze..

Ralph

ps. Unless JButler, Gigi or Tycoonist check in (in whihc case post a got it and take it awaY) I will advertise for a new player or two in the Registration thread and will Play Monday if all else fails to keep the game moving
