New SG - Monarch, Standard Settings, Continents, Large Map

Apologies for the slight delay (too much football!) Report will be up tomorrow... We have met some other AI's are they :borg: or are we doing fine is the question....

Yikes, what a tease!

Are they a lot more advanced than us? Did they arrive in Galleons? Or did we find them in our Caravels?

So we start by maximising scientists in Antium and Rome as previously discussed at 6 :science: per turn each before multipliers this boosts our research up from just over 200 to around 280 beakers per turn which is huge!!

Antium.jpg

We research through Civil Service as our caravel works its way east wards towards the AI’s. During the revolt to Bureaucracy we get a nice random event,

engineeringradnevent.jpg

I always take the 50% option if it is a tech I want and engineering is very desirable…and we do get lucky. This actually spurs me to finish off engineering after civil service before going down the Liberalism path.

With Trebuchets alongside Macemen we will soon be able to expand and knock Pericles / Hammy down several pegs if desired.

Now Rome (unlike Antium) needed a harbour for health and once this is built and we pick up sheep from hammy its health improves enough to allocate an extra scientist. Our other cities are busy finishing off their key infrastructure and then gradually working on troops to boost our power which is rising nicely.

So AI’s we meet Gandhi rapidly

MeetGandhi.jpg

followed by Elizabeth,

meetlizzie.jpg

I don’t immediately trade as I want to Puzzle out Worst Enemies before picking the trading bloc to join. A particular priority is to be friendly with the AI who has Philosophy as if we can trade for that it will accelerate our Liberalism run noticeably.

A couple of turns later we meet Gilga who is Liz and Gandhi’s worst enemy

meetgilga.jpg

so we do a compass for calendar + change trade with Liz and then this one with Gandhi.

gandhitrade.jpg

Both as always slightly favour the Ai but we have picked up 2 nice techs.

We have another caravel heading north to then go west to track down other AI’s keep our current east bound heading up the coast and looking for a sea path to the east.

In the meantime we founded our horse stone deer city. It was debatable whether a Monument was higher priority but decided on granary for long term prospects..

Lastly remember our deer iron city.. which didn’t look that great well add in Maoi statues to this and it will be a nice little city.. Mighty oaks from Little Acorns.

moaicity.jpg

And of course the million dollar question is how are we doing.

powerok.jpg

Well Power is good and with the quality of our troops (and tactics) I think in 10 more turns we can probably go to war.

economyok.jpg

Economically we are leading the pack and tech worries

notechworries.jpg

we haven’t got any… Oh ye of little faith who thought we were in trouble we are in a great position. I think one of the ”psychological” issues to face as you go to higher levels is that you will have a smaller empire but as long it is quality like ours that’s fine and it is often only after liberalism (with rifles et al) that you grow to be the biggest.

Thoughts

We have (95% chance) a scinetist next turn and we can either save him to partilaly bulb education (he will produce more beakers this way) or just bulb him on philosophy and hand research education. Another one from Antium will follow fairly soon after.

I would basically build (not whip!!) macemen (anywhere!) a couple of medic Pikes for protection (from Cumae so they have medic 1 straight away) and trebs anwyhere fior the next 10 turns at whihc point attack pericles.

Research wise go down the Liberlsim till 1 turn from completion line) whihc will be alot more than 10 turns.

It is about to get fun again as we will soon go back to war!!

yap looks nice ralph. Sorry for the turn set but well coming in cold all I see is a snap shot and work from there.

Something to keep in mind btw is that hammy's core towns are all on hills. I'd deal with greece first.

Oh and I love gilly.. seems whenever I meet him in a continent game, he's everyone worst enemy hahah. Guess he's the male version of izzy. :D

Cheers!

Oh me of little faith! I'm unfamiliar being this competitive in research.

No one else has Optics yet? In a continents game, getting the circumnavigation bonus is as good as a World Wonder in my book. Let's not trade maps with anyone if we can avoid it. Do we have explorers or scouts on any of those two Caravels? If there's an ice-block at the poles we may need to circumnavigate on foot.

Nice job of souping up our research, Ralph!

I've got it. Will have to play quickly and post as I will be away from the CIV computer for the next two days.

My thoughts:

Elizabeth probably won't trade Philo for quite a while since it is a monopoly tech that no one else seems close to getting. So we may as well bulb that. But if others think Liz will come sooner than later, we can give that a shot.

I don't remember off the top of my head who will be better to attack. I will focus on building up the army and leave that decision to another set.

A cracking idea .... which I unfortunately forgot!!!

We could build one, walk him to the other side of Pericles' land and pick him up with the caravel currently going north to rescue the idea!!

The Report

(1) Livy thinks we're puny
MonarchSG28Large.jpg

(3)
MonarchSG29Large.jpg

Gilgamesh wants Metal Casting for HBR, which I would do except that he's worst enemies with the civs were trying to butter up.

(4) Meet Willem.
MonarchSG30Large.jpg

Willem is in with Gilgamesh and outs with our buddies on the other continent. So he doesn't like us too much.

(5) Meet Pacal.
MonarchSG31Large.jpg

And another civ that doesn't like our trade history.

I change one specialist (who the AI had assigned to be a Spy) to be artist in Hadru b/c we are losing the culture battle in our first ring. If we decide to go to war with Hammy we can change this.

(10) Great random event:

MonarchSG32Large.jpg

My research pattern was actually to self research Philosophy since Liz wouldn't trade it to us. This allowed me to use the bulb on Education, which, as Ralph pointed out, made more beakers. It took 5 turns to research Philosophy. Then the bulb cut Education down by 7 or 8 turns, plus one turn from the Random Event in our favor.

About workers, I was trying to lay down some new roads for increased mobility, especially since Pericles culture had cut off our only connection point between Rome and Cumae. I also have to say I'm not a big fan of chopping forests on tundra unless there is an emergency because there isn't anything that can be improved on so it results in a permanent loss.

I did not see the comment Re: explorer before I played. Sorry. Instead I built lots of units. I think we're gonna be able to fair very well in the coming war. That said, my current vote is to go to war against Hammy for two reasons: 1) Culture push on Hadru which is stealing floodplain cottages. We don't have enough production there to build culture. Easier to take the pressure off. 2) Hammy still doesn't have feudalism, so if we push hard and fast the cities on hills won't be too tough. If he does get feudalism soon, that might change my opinion.

The save:

keep in mind as we plan on beating down greece, we can scoot some galleys north of his capital and prolly still have neutral land to hide them in.

That means the turn we declare war, we can punk his lightly defended capitol.

Cheers!

You're right, Liquidated we could definitely use those sneak tactics on Pericles. I would be in favor of such a move if Hammy gets feudalism and we are able to hold off his cultural attacks on Hadrumentum.

hammy doesn;t need feudalism to improve his defences. Bowmen are base archers with a 50% mod to melee... that's longbow material at half the cost.

Seriously hammy in BC is better on defence than even a protective leader.

Just like you do not throw chariots against greece, skip hammy til gunpowder.

Cheers!

Liq is right, Pericles is the correct target..

1. Trebs versus Longbows is fine
2. Most cities not on hills
3. Always attack the biggest dog you can take down, the little ones can wait.

Dazedroyalty
Srubkai (up and overdue)
Frankcor (on deck)
Liquidated

I think that's it. You're totally right about Hammy and the Bowmen. I forgot about his UU. Pericles will be going down then.

DOH!!!!! I didn't realize it was my turn.
I was sitting here Looking forward for someone else to get the next turn.

I'll grab the turn tonight and play.

I haven't had a chance to open the game up yet.

Research: we still shooting for Liberalism
Units: prepping for War... (Not sure how close we are to having an effective strike force) Also we should do some exporting of the other side of the world with an Explorer and/or spy.
War: We are going after Pericles, but any thoughts on strategy and or cities kept/razed?

Any other thoughts on the game:confused:

I will; try and make up for lack of roster posting with a little analysis;-

Research, we should stick with the research liberalism till 1 turn from completion path for now, after which we will have choices to make

Militarily I would say we are a few units swaying form pressing the button./ A couple more trebs for Stack 2 in Hadrumetum though Cumae’s stack is nearly ready to go.

We have some good troops in the backline who could be swopped around primarily Boosting Hadru’s stacks. A longbow man in each of our costal cities for defence against seaborne invasions wouldn’t go amiss.

So I would say you will be launching the invasion Scrubkai as reward for your patience!

Suggested invasion route, keeping our lines nice and neat.

It is a shame no Drama trade available as Theatres are one of the most cost effective war weariness controls out their for a mainly SE Research base like ours.

Micro Management is IMHO perfect :goodjob:

btw ralph, if you have bug's ear, have that message of alt+ctrl+o to open bug options on as default... pain in the arse to find that command to turn it on the first time

Cheers!
