New Sheriff in town

Actually, there is a better way to understand IOT.

Watch all 45 episodes of Monty Python's Flying Circus while playing Starcraft against a Korean, a stoner, and a 12 year old, with Downfall parodies running in the background.
That sounds like a lot of fun. :)

There is no one notion of "what a NES is". We run Risk games. We run Diplomacy games. We run "just screw around" games. We run games that aim for realism via mathematical models, and we run games that aim for realism via the knowledge and "common sense" of the mod. We run games where the moderator decides everything, and we run games where the moderator decides nothing. IOTs would fit in very well as one type of game among many.
Yes, there's very little clear definition for what an NES is, it's arguably just a term for the community as a whole. The definition I tend to use is 'A collaborative nation-based roleplaying game'. Stats and stories are present in more typical NESes, such as N3S or TerraNES, but stats are not critical for a NES' success (see GalaxyNES) and NESes lacking stories still possess a driving narrative which provides most of the satisfaction from the game.

The point is that there is no one NES culture. There are already a bunch of cliques, with varying degrees of inbreeding. You'd just be one among many.
Iggy twangs the 'storyist' banjo. ;)

I'm fine with a merger honestly. More people = better games :)
I definitely agree with the latter, but I'm not sure about a merger, entirely because I'm very attached to the name 'Never Ending Stories'. I think that a system of cross-pollination, such as the threads that have just been set up, is a great way to start, and we'll see how things go from there.

In those debates where NESers came over here to tell us about how we were inferior to them, they always ended with it being generally agreed on that the IOT and the NES are rather different things and so not able to be compared.

So if we can't be compared with NESs can we truly be merged with them?

I'm all for cooperation between our two groups but I don't think that re-branding both under one overreaching title will really work that well.

Edit:
I think that a system of cross-pollination, such as the threads that have just been set up, is a great way to start, and we'll see how things go from there.
I agree with this.

My opinion on the whole matter:

Pros of merging:
-Post count
-Increased player base for both IOT and NES
-Experienced NES players for our IOT games and vis-versa
-Cross-pollination of ideas between IOT and NES within the same forum, which will only lead to better games for everyone

Cons of merging:
-Can' be as spammy (though there are dedicated spam threads in NES, so I'm not sure if this is true)
-We lose out "unique" culture we've forged for the past year or two

The more I think about this, the more I'm leaning towards a merge with NES into their forum, so we get postcount and all the pro's above. But the forum should change its name from just "NES" to something like "NES/IOT" or "NES and IOT". This is to show that IOT has developed it's own unique culture and isn't just another NES clone, although they are really extremely similar.

tl;dr (seroiusly?) merge the two into NES forum, rename NES forum NES/IOT or NES and IOT

, the darker side of NES. Spam, which once pervaded the entire subforum, is concentrated into one single, extremely seedy thread. :p

Generally it seems as though NES threads are less spammy. But that's from what I've seen

... the option's been on the table for an hour.
A bit longer now, but it is still quite early in the game. It is nice to see discussion of the topic in both forums.
Please, keep it civilized. Personal opinions of other members are not a good reason for/against merging.
Absolutely. Thanks.

I am keeping it civilized... I could say "I bloody goddamn hate you and your ilk," but I did not.
Personal remarks like that (and the one above) are not welcome. If you cannot be polite, I can help solve your problem.

I don't feel that way, I was just using it as an example of how I wasn't being "uncivilized," as SK put it. You guys just come across as snobbish to me. You guys can be nice blokes at times, but I really just don't see why people are pushing for a merger right now, when it's completely unnecessary and I thus acted a bit rashly with my wording. :p

I guess you missed this, Birdjaguar. :)

I think that most of the NESers that came over here to tell you about how you're inferior to them were wrong. :dunno:

Aaaah, it's not that seedy. Used to be significantly worse, back before Turner nuked it repeatedly. We should totally make it seedier again. :D

I think that we should take baby steps when it comes to merging. Let's start with the threads in both forums and take it from there. Merging too early could have negative consequences for both groups.

Why not make the decision democratic ? - Hold a public vote in each and each tally will be verified by the players and GMs in each forum.

Verification is determined by that they must have been a player or GM in each respective forum.

If one forum say yes and another says no, then nothing changes. It must be unanimous on both sides. The outcome of the vote will than have a merge date announced, if that is what the majority decide.

I nominate "Double A" to be the adjudicator of the IOT vote, as I have observed he has an eye for detail and knows virtually every player.

Deciding polls of that sort leaves the other side bitter and angry. Just look at the Civ V IAAR preffix vote. Although I was on the winning side, there was quite a lot of bitterness in the conversation. Polls of that sort just incite flame wars, IMO.

Speaking from the experience of the NES forum...

NESes used to be relegated to a small subforum of Civ3 Stories and Tales, until about four years ago when people decided this was stupid and that we would attract more recruits by moving to Other Games. So we held a vote, during the course of which there was considerable acrimony on both sides, with several people angrily against the notion of moving away from the ancestral home, and others simply disapproving of change in general because Change is Bad. But the vote passed, the forum moved, and pretty much nobody hated anybody else because of it moving forward.

Change is something good in the end.

But it should be well debated, before a poll is even put up.

After re-reading the thread that I mentioned earlier, it was less like I remembered and more like what your poll was like. But tensions did get raised and such, I still think that there a better ways to go about it than a straight up poll.

Change is something good in the end.

Change isn't always good, I wouldn't want CFC to become "Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing" Fanatics Center, for example.

But I agree with your other points though. :)

Merging IOT and NES? Over my dead body!

*pulls out Barret M107* You rang? :p
More seriously, I don't see what the problem is with a merge. Stated by Joecoolyo-

All IOTers join the resistance against the NESers.

You have not sent your usual 5 line orders yet. You do not deserve the right to initiate resistance.
