New Xbox basically kills off used games

You need to read some more of this thread.
You have no property rights. Games are not a subject of property rights, that is the whole deal.

I've read and cross read through most of it.... I'd say that your statement is exactly the subject of this debate.

Most consumers don't care because most consumers don't really understand the situation.
Problem? Problem.... Problem!

I don't agree that cool publishers are dying off, though. There exist a significant and I believe growing number of smaller studios who care about our fair use rights pumping out quality games. They are getting community support via kickstarter campaigns or just word of mouth. We totally need to support companies like that if we want to "win" this "fight", but.. there are also bigger companies like Paradox and Valve who I would put in the same category.
Paradox seem to be going down the tube as well. I do agree that some osrt of organised movement is necessary to keep up the good companies afloat.... However from where I sit they seem to be sinking more than floating.
As for Valve... well its Steam ;)

If your console is connected to the internet, it will auto-update the game. Steam has an option to turn off patching. Why? Because Valve understands modding communities and patching issues. People hating on Steam as some kind of tyrant of PC gaming is beyond me. Steam saves me so much money and unifies so much of my activity without a monthly fee.
"I will do everything for you my child" kind of service? It all depends if dad has good intentions. I don't think that limiting the freedom of the user is a good thing in that respect.

Also I don't understand how "Valve understands modding communities and patching issues".

Personally, the most creepy thing about the new XBox is that Kinect will always be on and online.
With that you have LITERALLY the Big Brother telescreen in your home, straight from 1984.

MS doesn't even think there's anything wrong in listening to private conversations to determine personalized ads. I give it zero days before governments will demand access to their logs.

Anyone with an XBox care to comment? I bet not :p

Well you can stop flipping out about the Kinect nonsense now but used games are still up in the air.

CNET: There seems to be some confusion here about the ability to resell Xbox One games, or reuse Xbox One games among other users.

Henshaw: Let me clear that up unequivocally. Xbox One will support the reselling and used game market for Xbox One games. We have not announced details about exactly how it's going to work, or how licenses are going to be exchanged. That's all coming up later in the year. What we have announced is that a used game ecosystem will be supported, so people can breathe easy. They will be able to get used games.

CNET: Kinect now needs to be on all the time. But there are obviously some people who say "I don't want this camera in my living room."

Henshaw: If you want privacy, we'll give you modes that ensure your privacy. And we actually have a little bit about this on the Web already. We will have something similar for the Kinect with Xbox One. The system is designed to have Kinect be an integral part of the experience. It's not the case where you'll be able to remove the camera altogether. But you'll be able to put the system in modes where you can be completely secure about the fact that the camera is off and can't see you.

Talked about this some with friends who I'd consider in the core demographic for the XBox, many having owned or still owning the XBox 1 (the original one), and the XBox 360. The reaction was by and large negative. Mainly due to the check-online-every-24-hours aspect. The consensus was it was a bigger headache than simply putting the disc in the drive. Or, as one person put it, he wants to be able to use it anywhere he has the physical requirements for it - that being electricity, a controller, and a display that can be connected. An Internet connection for single player or LAN/split-screen multiplayer is an extraneous requirement that only inconveniences customers.

The lack of backwards compatibility was also criticized, and cited as making it a good opportunity to jump to the PS4. If you have to keep your 360 to play your current games, and can't sell it, it doesn't save you any money to get a One instead of a PS4... so any vendor lock-in advantage is gone. And with Microsoft's focus seeming to be more on TV and sports (they're very good at chanting those two words), while Sony keeps focus on games, the PS4 is more appealing.

The recurring cost, if modest, of XBox Live versus no Internet charges on the PS3/PS4 was also cited as making switching to the PS4 attractive. The "soft" features of the XBox One weren't mentioned at all, and with the hardware specs of the One and PS4 similar, that essentially meant that Microsoft's unveiling didn't contain anything of value vs. the PS4.

So my early impression is the PS4 may retake marketshare, especially among the core demographics. Perhaps that will change by launch, but if I had to bet on the success of one today, it would be the PS4.

Steam hardly does "everything for you." Steam does not limit your freedom in anyway, offline mode much? Valve understands modding because they actively implement modding resources and the workshop for games so that players CAN mod games with ease. They know some people wish to not auto-update for mod reasons, so the option to disable it is there.

The Steam hate by some people is just silly. Do any of you even remember how frustrating it was to deal with physical media?

I dunno, if you have a respectable internet line, but not a super fast one.... I for example would much rather have a disk to install from rather than hit purchase/download then come back in a day when it might be done. If it doesn't then subsequently need to patch for the better part of a day again.

I'm pretty bummed out, since I really liked my 360 and was all set to buy an XboxOne, even at full price, but this decision will probably price me out. Guess it's Playstation4 or bust for me.
Or you can buy a good computer and switch entirely to PC gaming.

The last console I had was SNES and the reasons I didn't get Playstation/Xbox/Dreamcast were that:
- Games were obscenely expensive
- Cannot backup or edit save games
- Cannot mod
- Cannot get... err free games (or buy from Steam)

I am a little confused by this "has to always be on" thing. Why, exactly, is that? Will you break it if you unplug it whenever you are not using it?

It would probably be like when the controller becomes disconnected: the game pauses, informs you the Kinect/internet connection has become disconnected, and will not let you resume playing until you restore the connection.

Oh. Well....derp. OF course it has to be on to be utilized. I was getting the impression that the unit for whatever reason had to be on 24/7 for some bizarro reason even if it was just sitting there not being actively used.

That's what I mean. It'll be like that always; regardless of whether or not you are playing a game.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/22/two-way-mirror-scottish-nightclub_n_3319613.html
One Scottish nightclub is under fire for installing two-way mirrors in its women's bathrooms, providing quite the show for male patrons in expensive, private booths.

The Shimmy Club in Glasgow, Scotland, aroused controversy last week when photographs from its ladies' room surfaced, showing women standing in front of mirrors that patrons in private booths could look through, according to The Scottish Sunday Express.

The club allegedly charges 800 pounds (about $1,200) to book a booth.

Some customers are furious.
It's kind of a one-way mirror to the living room of every Xbox One owner.

I think people here talked about automatic updates amongst other things.

Valve understands modding because they actively implement modding resources and the workshop for games so that players CAN mod games with ease. They know some people wish to not auto-update for mod reasons, so the option to disable it is there.
Really? It hasn't been my experience. I now understand what you mean't but still can't agree.

The Steam hate by some people is just silly. Do any of you even remember how frustrating it was to deal with physical media?
No, it was just fine. Even now if I loose my computer AND internet connection I can still re-install my games on a new laptop.

Even for SP?

Bingo!

Also that:

Yeah, the Xbox One will require you to connect online regularly and have the kinect always on and plugged in even for SP. Also this lovely news about how the Kinect recognizes unknown people and asks them to identify themselves and then stores the information.

Its pretty much the ultimate marketing research box now, and Microsoft will have access to ALL that data and use it for the ads they already show on the 360. Plus they could use it for a lot more things, like enforcing how many people can view a rental movie.

It's not clear that this information is available to MS.

And if you lose the game, you lose it forever. If you lose your computer, you can still get your saves from Steam cloud when you redownload your game one day!
